Hodag Family Day raises money for football team, encourages community support

RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander High School Hodags will hit the field in just a few weeks. And there are many changes to the program this year.

"Coach Ferge brought in a new offensive scheme and it's going to be a little more up-tempo. The people that haven't been to a football game in a while might want to come out this year and see what happens. It's going to be a good year for the Hodags," said Gridiron Club vice president Jay Sampson.

Manawa man injured after altercation with officer

PLOVER - A 33-year-old man will need to recover from gunshot wounds after getting in a fight with police near plover last night.

The Portage County Sheriff's Department got reports of an erratic driver on west bound State Highway 54 Friday near Plover. An officer from the Plover Police Department pulled him over a little before 7 p.m. between Maple and Locust Drive.

La Crosse woman faces felony in dog's death

LA CROSSE - A La Crosse woman now faces a felony charge in the death of an aged basset hound owned by her ex-boyfriend.

Selina Boulton was charged in December with two misdemeanors but prosecutors elevated the charges on Friday.

The 32-year-old is now charged with mistreatment of animals, a felony, and disorderly conduct. Her preliminary hearing will be Aug. 15.

UPDATE: One dead in one car rollover northeast of Wausau, six teenagers released from hospitals

MARATHON COUNTY - One teenager died Friday after an SUV crashed in Marathon County. Police don't know why 10 people were in that car when it rolled over, but an Aspirus Hospital spokesperson says six teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 were taken from the scene to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau. Now, four of the six have been released from the hospital.

The Marathon County Sheriff's Department says the crash happened just before 10 a.m. on Highway 52 near Mill Road.

Ponsse showcases new logging machinery for Northwoods loggers

RHINELANDER - America will welcome a new type of logging machine. Ponsse showcased its Scorpion King Friday morning in Rhinelander.

The nearly 50,000 lb. machine is the company's first with a 360 degree cutting turret.

Company leaders say that gives operators the chance to grab any tree within reach without having to move its base.

Judge upholds jury award in Ventura case

ST. PAUL, MN - A federal judge has ruled a $1.8 million defamation damage award to former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura is reasonable.

A federal jury last month sided with the former pro wrestler and movie actor in his two-year fight to prove he was defamed by a military sniper and best-selling author who claimed to have punched out Ventura at a bar for bad-mouthing the Navy SEALs.

Local butcher shop helps customers pair local ingredients

MINOCQUA - Some people love restaurant cooked meals. Now, you can buy the same ingredients restaurant chefs cook with.

A Northwoods grocery school is teaching people how to pair local food to make a restaurant meal at home.

"They can take you step by step with the initial product, preparing it, how long to cook it, what to pair it with. We can give you the entire package and you can go home and feel confident doing it," said TJ's Butcher Block & Market owner Tim Krolczyk.

One Dead in One Car Rollover Northeast of Wausau

MARATHON COUNTY - A SUV carrying 10 teenagers rolled over on Highway 52 on Mill Road in Easton leaving one dead and nine injured.

An Aspirus Hospital spokesperson says six teenagers were taken from the scene to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau. One of those teenagers, a male, was then transferred to St. Joseph's in Marshfield. Of the five still at Aspirus, two are female and three are male. All patients at Aspirus are in stable, non-life- threatening conditions.

Wastewater Treatment Plant workers take steps to control E. coli

PHILLIPS - Leaders in Phillips saw a rise in E Coli numbers last month. People working for the Philips Wastewater Treatment Plant are still dealing with the impact of winter. Broken equipment at the plant let unfiltered runoff boost E. coli counts to unsafe levels in the Phillips Chain of Lakes last month.

"RBCs, the rotating biological contactors, they are our secondary treatment process," explains Bronson Thalacker, Phillips Public Works Director.
