Snyder cuts U.P. visit short, surveys Detroit flood damage from police helicopter

DETROIT - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has surveyed flooded streets and neighborhoods across the Detroit area to assess damage caused by what he calls a ``record event of rain.''

In a video (http://bit.ly/1p2sl5Z ) from Oakland County International Airport in Waterford Township, Snyder says the Emergency Operations Center will help make assessments on whether federal assistance will be needed.

Wisconsin consumer spending behind national pace, 3% growth in 2012

ACROSS WISCONSIN - Wisconsinites didn't spend as much on personal products in 2012 compared to the rest of the country. Consumer spending grew by three percent in Wisconsin between 2011 and 2012. That's less than the national average of four percent.

The U.S. Department of Commerce's numbers look at what people spend their money on.

Lac du Flambeau tribe, state sign agreement to bring more resources to children, families

LAC DU FLAMBEAU - The Lac du Flambeau tribe and state agreed Tuesday to send more resources to the tribe's Indian Child Welfare Department.

The department provides case management and counseling for children and families. It also licenses foster homes and monitors children who have been placed in off-reservation foster homes by the county.

Rhinelander man faces charges for accident that pinned a woman under the car

RHINELANDER - A Rhinelander man faces two felonies for rolling a car over and pinned a woman under the car.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office say 27-year-old Louis Stone was backing up with a woman standing on the step on the side of the car. The criminal complaint shows the car tipped because of speed and the angle of the wheels.

UPDATE: Police say man who was shot by an officer tried to attack the officer with a knife

Plover police are defending an officer who shot and wounded a man during a traffic stop, saying the man was trying to attack the officer with a knife.

A Stevens Point Journal Media report (http://spjour.nl/XdKW5c ) says Officer Andrew Hopfensperger shot 33-year-old Brett Lieberman on Friday evening.

U.P. school among 11 charter school authorizers in Michigan to face suspension

LANSING, MI - State Superintendent Mike Flanagan is putting 11 of Michigan's 40 charter school authorizers on notice of possible suspension.

Authorizers at risk are Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan (Marquette), Kellogg Community College and school districts in Detroit, Highland Park and Muskegon Heights.

Differing views on mining highlight 25th Senate District primary

HURLEY - In the geographically huge 25th state senate district, three Democrats want to advance to November's general election.

Voters will choose their nominee in Tuesday's primary election.

On the ballot will be Poplar businessman Gary Kauther, Park Falls Mayor Tom Ratzlaff, and current state Rep. Janet Bewley of Ashland.

Green Bay waters could be ripe for algae

GREEN BAY - The head of the regional U.S. Environmental Protection Agency office says conditions in the waters of Green Bay could be ripe for the same kind of algae that caused the water in Ohio to be undrinkable for a few days.

Wisconsin Public Radio reports (http://bit.ly/1reXodi ) while in Milwaukee last week U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regional administrator Susan Hedman said the waters of Green Bay have significant algal blooms.
