Woman cited for climbing into zoo's giraffe pen

MADISON - Police say a California woman was cited after climbing into the giraffe exhibit at a Madison zoo and getting kicked in the face.

A police report says 24-year-old Amanda Hall, of San Luis Obispo, California, climbed over one fence and almost got over the second fence encircling the giraffe enclosure at the Henry Vilas Zoo about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Northwoods education and training center celebrates 50th anniversary

LAONA - The Blackwell Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center celebrated 50 years of the program near Laona during an open house Friday.

The center aims to help disadvantaged students who couldn't finish their high school education. They also train students for in-demand jobs. Those include trades like carpentry, labor, welding and others industries. Students like Cruz Biddle found out more about the center while he was at the Wisconsin Challenge Academy in southern Wisconsin.

Board that helps fill sheriff's office, jail positions seeks applicants

VILAS COUNTY - The Vilas County Civil Service Commission works to hire the best people for jobs in the Sheriff's Office and Jail, but the commission is looking to fill an open position itself.

The commission was founded two years ago through an ordinance passed by the county board. Since then, it has helped to restart the sheriff's office's water patrol and created a chief detective position in the office.

Health experts want parents to vaccinate kids against HPV

RHINELANDER - Some health experts think almost everyone who is sexually active will get HPV at some point in their lives. Human papillomavirus can cause certain types of cancer like cervical cancer, anal cancer, and cancer of the penis.

HPV is a virus that infects the skin and mucous membranes. Health experts say it's the most common sexually transmitted disease.

Dogs will display speed, dock diving and agility in a canine competition

RHINELANDER - August can be known as the 'dog days' of summer.
One local company is taking that phrase to the next level, with a canine competition.

Pawz N' Clawz natural pet food store will host their first Pawzitive Outdoor Games on Saturday. Dogs will display speed, dock diving and agility. The tail-wagging event was created to celebrate the store's one year anniversary.

Paddle boarding's not just a summer sport

EAGLE RIVER - You can create many memories on the water during the summer. One activity that's soared in popularity over the past few years is paddle boarding.

It's fun, relaxing and the perfect way to play on area lakes and rivers. Wildwood Outdoor Adventures has been providing paddle board rentals for seven years. But it took them a while to build their business.
