U.P. school one of several in Michigan to get funds for year-round classes

LANSING, MI - Several Michigan schools are expected to get money to help transition from the traditional school calendar to a year-round calendar as part of a pilot program.

MLive.com reports (http://bit.ly/1pDNWB6 ) the State Board of Education is set to approve grant requests for four schools at next week's meeting and two additional schools received money through the Michigan Economic Development Corp. to help offset their costs.

6 Wisconsin health care systems form partnership

LA CROSSE - Six major Wisconsin health care organizations are forming a partnership to reduce costs and improve care.

Gundersen Health System Vice President Mark Platt says the partnership is not a merger. The six organizations will remain separate but they may work together to buy equipment or hire information technology services so that they can get better deals and reduce costs.

Advocates launch effort to build support for same-sex marriage in Wisconsin

MADISON - Gay rights advocates are starting a website to build support for same-sex marriage in Wisconsin.

The American Civil Liberties Union's Wisconsin chapter along with Fair Wisconsin, a gay rights organization, and Freedom to Marry, a national organization pushing for gay marriage, announced Thursday they plan to launch an effort dubbed Wisconsin Unites for Marriage.

With similar policy positions, Garfield, Meyers, point to age, experience in far northern Assembly district primary

PARK FALLS - Graham Garfield and Beth Meyers don't seem to disagree on much.

"I think as good Democrats, we agree on many of the issues," Meyers says.

The two Democratic candidates for a far northern Wisconsin state assembly district have one major difference, though.

Police searching for man that possibly robbed Marathon County Bank

HATLEY - The Marathon County Sheriff's Office is still looking for a man they believe tried to rob a bank in Hatley in Marathon County Wednesday.

Police dispatch recieved a call around 3 p.m. saying a white man, between 25-30 years old, with brown hair, baseball hat, and blue and white plaid shirt went into a bank with a handgun.

Energy company asks Wisconsin to approve pipeline

MILWAUKEE - An energy delivery company has asked Wisconsin officials to approve the construction of a 14-mile oil pipeline in the northern part of the state.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the request made by Enbridge Energy would represent the final piece of its 610-mile project. Enbridge says the $2.6 billion Sandpiper pipeline stretching from North Dakota to northwestern Wisconsin will give Midwest refiners greater access to domestic oil.

Aspirus and Ministry both donate $15,000 to the athletic training program

RHINELANDER - Rhinelander schools will have an easier time keeping their athletes healthy. Aspirus Clinic and Ministry Medical Group each donated $15,000 Wednesday to the athletic training program.

Rhinelander has had trouble keeping the program funded in the past. School officials hope that the donations will encourage others to do the same.

ST. GERMAIN - Joe and Kathy Lass opened the Wolf Pack Cafe in St. Germain fifteen years ago. They've enjoyed continued success. One of the big reasons, is their world famous pancakes.

Wolf Pack Cafe Co-Owner Kathy Lass explains, "People come from all over the world to say they've never had a pancake like ours. They just rant and rave about them. We never knew we had the world's best pancake!"

UPDATE: Forest committee unanimously passes referendum resolution for proposed off-road park, goes to full board

CRANDON - The Forest County Forestry Committee unanimously passed a referendum resolution during a meeting Tuesday night. The move sends the resolution to the full county board for its August 19th meeting.

According to Forest County Forest Administrator David Ziolkowski, the 7-0 decision came after a more than three-hour long meeting at the Forest County Courthouse Tuesday night.

No identification will be needed for Tuesday primary

MADISON - A federal appeals court has given opponents of Wisconsin's photo identification law until after Tuesday's primary to file their arguments as to whether it should be in effect.

Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen on Tuesday asked the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to quickly lift an injunction blocking the photo ID requirement.

Sikhs honor 2-year anniversary of temple shooting

OAK CREEK, WI - Sikhs and community members have gathered at a Milwaukee-area temple on the two-year anniversary of the day a white supremacist shot and killed six worshippers.

Members of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin held a remembrance ceremony Tuesday evening. They remembered the six who died and the five people who were wounded, including one priest who remains unable to move or talk.

Blue-green algae bloom found in Pelican Lake

ONEIDA COUNTY - Workers with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources have found blue-green algae in Pelican Lake in Oneida County.

Health experts say you should avoid using or touching the water because of toxins produced by this type of blue-green algae. The algae are microscopic organisms that are naturally in Wisconsin lakes, streams and ponds at low levels.

Off-Road group & forest leaders will meet to discuss off-road park, possibility of referendum

CRANDON - Off road leaders and forestry workers in Forest County will discuss plans Tuesday night for a proposed 10,000 acre off-road park in Forest County.

The committee could also recommend sending the project to a county referendum vote.

This will only be the second time leaders from the non-profit Wisconsin Off-Road Vehicle Park Inc. (WORVPI) have met with the Forest County Forestry Department.
