Fairgrounds barn fund-raiser Saturday will feature dining, dancing and more

The Langlade County Fairgrounds barn-raising committee is planning a party Saturday night to have a very good time and raise funds for the big project. The doors of the Edison Club Events Center will open at 4:30 p.m., a buffet dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. and then the attention turns to entertainment with a DJ, live music by Siren and karaoke by Corey Koeppel. Judge denies request to suppress statements

A trio of Langlade County sheriff’s deputies provided testimony in Judge Fred Kawalski’s courtroom Monday in a motion hearing held in the case of an Antigo man cited for an incident involving children at Mueller’s Lake in Polar this June. Victor A. Havenga, 57, of 508 Forrest Ave. remains housed in the local lockup on a $10,000 cash bond charged with three felony counts of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. City cracking down on snowy, icy walks: They will be cleared

With snow arriving in just weeks—or maybe days—the city of Antigo is toughening up its policy regarding keeping sidewalks clear. According to a notification published in Monday’s Antigo Daily Journal, the city will no longer give a warning or two to property owners who are errant in their sidewalk clearing duties. Prime Time: Bennetts remembered as Lake Superior hero

They were life-savers at a place and time when heroism was commonplace, and even expected. Thomas W. Bennetts, together with Capt. Charles Tucker and seven other members of the Eagle Harbor Coast Guard Station were on duty that terrible November stretch in 1913, when the 451-foot freighter L.C. Syringes, other paraphernalia found, two people arrested

An assortment of drug paraphernalia — items which officials said were “commonly used to hold and ingest bath salts or other illegal substances” — were retrieved from a vehicle stopped in the Goodwill lot on Antigo’s north side early Sunday. Two people, a 34-year-old Bowler man and a 20-year-old Antigo woman, were arrested in connection with the stop which came at about 3 a.m. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Sentencing set for Antigo man who exposed self to girl

An Antigo man who exposed himself and then masturbated in direct view of an eight-year-old girl inside a bathroom at a local ball park this summer will learn his punishment for the crime early next year.

A sentencing hearing was set Jan. 16 for Jacob Ball, 26, of 1228 Deleglise St. after he entered pleas of no contest to an assortment of offenses Friday in Langlade County Circuit Court.

School board to interview candidates for vacancy, no assurance on decision

The Antigo school board will interview seven people for its board vacancy on Tuesday, but with the board split 4-4 along ideological lines, there are no guarantees the seat will be filled. West recognized, again, as top school

For the sixth year, Antigo’s West Elementary School has been honored as among the best in the state in meeting the needs of disadvantaged students. First grade instructors Diane Weberpal and Deb Tauer traveled to Madison recently to accept the award from State Superintendent Tony Evers on behalf of Principal Scott Farmer and the entire West teaching staff. Local heating contractor provides new furnace to Phlox man in need

Just in time for the winter, a local heating and air conditioning contractor is doing its part to keep the northwoods warm. Through its participation in the Heat U.S. Wisconsin Campaign sponsored by Lennox International, Schulz Heating & Cooling Ltd. technicians recently installed a new furnace at a home in Phlox that had been heated only by wood. What started as a gift to a critically ill young man—a way to bring him back from the brink perhaps—has grown into a new downtown business with a national and even worldwide clientele. Zane Guitars is formally opening its retail outlet in the 700 block of Fifth Avenue today, carving a store and manufacturing facility from the former Antigo Sportswear location. End of daylight time signals it is the season to check safety devices

With temperatures dropping and Daylight Saving Time ending early Sunday, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and ReadyWisconsin officials are urging residents to make sure their home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order, and an emergency kit is ready in the event of weather emergencies. Bath salts danger is topic of program

The Langlade County Sheriff’s Department is bringing its very popular drug education program to a meeting at a special time Saturday. Habitat completes another nice residence

Kyle and Amber Crum signed the purchase papers for their first-ever home this morning, but the celebration started early. Thrivent Builds Mid-Wisconsin Chapter, together with the Langlade County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, held an open house at the Crum’s newly constructed home at 156 Berner Street on Saturday, drawing friends, family members, volunteers and the curious. Two nabbed here on drug counts in downtown traffic stop

An Antigo woman is among two people in custody today awaiting prosecution on allegations they were in possession of both methamphetamine and crack cocaine. The pair was arrested Tuesday afternoon when a Langlade County sheriff’s deputy executed a traffic stop in Antigo’s downtown. The drugs, along with a pipe and an unused syringe, were seized as evidence and the case is being referred to the district attorney’s office for charges. School board pleased, budget OKed

With only slight dissension, the Antigo school board Tuesday approved a 2013-14 budget that will increase taxes by just under 8 percent. At a special meeting, the board unanimously passed a spending plan for the current school year totaling $30.9 million, topped by a general fund budget of $26.4 million. The remaining portions of the budget include $464,000 in community service funds, which cover operation of the Clara R. White Lake medical facility awaits final approvals before opening, shutdown a problem

With the exception of some paperwork issues, the new White Lake Clinic is ready for operation. Elcho school gets a few dollars to offset taxes

The Elcho school district didn’t exactly receive a windfall from the state’s just-approved influx of state aid, touted as a way to reduce local property taxes. At the district’s annual meeting Wednesday. Administrator Bill Fisher said that, due to the way the state aid formula calculates how the money will be distributed, Elcho stands to receive a grand total of $5—the bill with Lincoln on the front—in additional state dollars.
