The new year is expected to ring in on a very cold note, but that won’t stop the hot action Tuesday evening on area restaurants and night spots. Temperatures during the day on Tuesday may nudge zero—may—and will plunge to 20 below or worse during the overnight hours, making it a perfect time to stay inside with family and friends, or to use the opportunity to make some new ones. Gartzke tradition continues with ski breakfast Saturday, flowage's trails ready

A holiday tradition will continue Saturday when the Antigo Bike and Ski Club hosts its annual Breakfast at Gartzke. The Gartzke Flowage Ski Trail will be the site of the annual event, with diners invited to ski or snowshoe into the expansive shelter for dining and fellowship. Read more: Antigo Daily Journal

Woman dies in Thursday fire at her residence on Arctic Street, no cause set

A gold Christmas star still hung from the front stoop of the Thelma Bula home today, hours after a smoky fire swept through the structure and left the 85-year-old woman dead. Antigo firefighters responded to the home at 1418 Arctic St., about a block south of the Langlade County Fairgrounds, just before 2 p.m. on Thursday, when three passersby in quick succession called 911 to report smoke pouring from a one-story bungalow. Holiday traffic stops result in area arrests

A few travelers making a Christmas day pass through Langlade County got a personal visit with sheriff’s deputies Wednesday. Authorities stopped a vehicle on Highway 55 near Pickerel Lake Road because the auto was not properly registered. One of the passengers, a 31-year-old Keshena area woman, was wanted on traffic-related warrants in both Langlade and Shawano counties. Full story: Antigo Daily Journal

Being in their first home a great experience for local Habitat couple

For Kyle and Amber Crum, “I’ll be Home for Christmas” has taken on a very special meaning. The Crums are celebrating their first Christmas in their new home at the corner of Gruber and Berner streets, constructed over the summer by a cadre of Habitat for Humanity volunteers with help from the Thrivent Builds program. Professional athletes from Antigo visiting home for Christmas holiday

t’s not easy getting two high school classmates together, much less pro athletes, especially when they play in different sports, but the timing was right as Justin Berg and Joe Piskula came together at the Antigo High School Monday. City walkway becomes winter wonderland

The weather has moderated a bit from the early winter deep freeze, allowing an excellent opportunity to stroll along the city’s Spring Brook walkway and enjoy the Winter Wonderland. Fourteen businesses and organizations have erected giant cards, ranging from whimsical to religious, along the walkway this year, sharing Christmas cheer in a way only Antigo can muster. Michaels Restaurant opens on Fifth Avenue, features hometown charm

Antigo has a new downtown restaurant, offering hometown charm and a full menu of home-cooked classics. Michaels Family Restaurant opened this month at the corner of Clermont Street and Fifth Avenue, in the building long-occupied by Olk Drugs and transformed in recent years into a series of eateries. Jack Lake ski trails groomed, but there still is a demand for plenty more snow

Langlade County recreation officials are urging patience as the winter season gets into swing. Although it seems as though winter started early, the white stuff has been light and fluffy and temperatures have been exceptionally frigid, not the ideal ingredients for cooking up a great batch of skiing and snowmobiling. White Lake board eyes a referendum

The White Lake board of education may be asking taxpayers for more funds. At its regular monthly meeting this week, the board discussed conducting an operating referendum in April, and may seek up to $250,000 annually for three years above state-cost controls. County receives forestry-linked award at board meeting this week

Langlade County has been honored for outstanding achievements in forestry education. At this week’s meeting of the County Board, supervisors accepted the 2013 Chairman’s Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions in Forestry Education from Claudia Baker, executive director of the Lumberjack Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc. After years of fun and entertainment, Fuddfest comes to an end in Vilas

Friends of Fuddfest were notified this week that the Nicholson family is pulling the plug on the summertime festival held in the town of Vilas. In a letter to dozens of sponsors, Molly Held, who has spearheaded the event, put it on the line. “We have been hurting financially for a few years and praying that each year would get better, but that didn’t happen,” she said. School board OKs spending on upkeep with reservations

On a split vote, the Antigo school board Tuesday authorized spending up to $400,000 from the district fund balance to cover deferred maintenance projects, but there are conditions. At its regular monthly session, the board voted 6-2 to transfer $400,000 from the fund balance for deferred maintenance projects, but stipulated that the dollars not be earmarked until after the district receives an audit of district buildings expected early next year. Upbeat presentations mark opening of December County Board meeting

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors settled into the very comfortable conference room this morning at the Wood Technology Center at the Northcentral Technical College campus here.
