Antigo man charged with shooting at buildings, vehicles

Antigo police are in possession of an assortment of weaponry and ammunition seized from the apartment of a local man accused of shooting at buildings and parked vehicles in the downtown area last week.

Cory E. Myers, 26, of 415 Edison St. appeared in Langlade County Judge Fred Kawalski’s courtroom Monday afternoon charged with two felony counts linked to the activity which drew police attention to the parking lot of the CoVantage Credit Union in the 400 block of Clermont Street.

Dr. Lori Weyers, who heads NTC, complimentary in board address

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors couldn’t have asked for a more complimentary guest at its November meeting today. Dr. Lori Weyers, who heads the sprawling Northcentral Technical College, paid a visit and with her staff, explained what is happening at the college, improvements, advances being made and across the system, all with student success in mind. Capitol rotunda Christmas tree leaving here Tuesday for the holiday

A Kempster-area balsam fir will be rolling before the light of day Tuesday heading toward Madison to serve as the Yule tree in the Wisconsin Capitol rotunda, offering a stunning sight at the home of state government. Northwoods business leaders looking at Highway 55 to become a 'scenic byway'

In a group of northwoods business leaders have their way, Highway 55 in eastern Langlade County may soon become known as a “scenic byway.” The Forest County Economic Development Partnership is taking the lead in the initiative, which would extend the byway designation from the Highways 55-64 intersection at Langlade north to the state line. AmeriGas, Salvation Army join to collect warm coats for winter use

With a definite chill in the air, AmeriGas has partnered with Salvation Army to provide winter coats to families in need. A sign donated by Tammy Pavek of Antigo Sign was installed at the AmeriGas office this week and people have been donating winter coats to help keep everyone warm this winter. Salvation Army's bell ringing campaign for 2013 gets started for the season

The Salvation Army bell-ringing campaign, one of Antigo’s true fund-raising successes, kicks off today with special passes and perks for early donors. This year, in addition to the red “bucket pass” buttons available for donations of $25, the Salvation Army is offering a limited number of collector pins for donations of $50 or more. The collector pins are designed to be worn on business attire during the Christmas season to promote the good works of Salvation Army in Langlade County. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Culver's marking 10th anniversary in Antigo

Rick and Cathy LeBrun are anticipating a grand celebration at their Culver’s restaurant Saturday and Sunday. Culver’s is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Antigo, and throughout the weekend guests can expect VIP treatment, including $1 small sundaes, single scoop cones or dishes, small root beer floats, regular cheese curds and regular onion rings. Public works get a cheer from city council at meeting

The Antigo public works department got a nice atta-boy Wednesday night. At the monthly meeting of the Common Council, Mayor Bill Brandt presented Street Commissioner Bob Piskula and Julie Zack, clerical assistant, with a plaque from the Cities and Villages Mutual Insurance Company honoring their commitment to safety in the workplace. Optimist Club gets a jump on holiday with display on walkway

The Antigo Optimist Club kicked off the holiday season a bit early this week, using the backdrop of the Spring Brook walking path and giant Christmas card display to present the Giving Tree organization with a donation to purchase gifts for children. Katie Clay, the Giving Tree organizer, accepted the $500 donation from Optimist President Nick Watchel, joined by members Sam Hardin, Rev. Dave Karolus, and Jessica Olson. Suspect in 'pot' plot discovery denies guilt

A Summit Lake man has entered pleas of not guilty on charges linked to the discovery of a live marijuana grow on county forest land in the town of Upham. Dwayne Gresser, 38, stands charged in Langlade County Circuit Court with three criminal counts — the manufacture or delivery of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of an illegally obtained prescription drug. Not guilty plea in case linked to drug death

A former Antigo woman entered a plea of not guilty in Langlade County Circuit Court today to an allegation she failed to provide proper aid to a man prior to him dying of a drug overdose in 2009. Melissa L. Merchant, 30, of Wausau stands charged with a felony count of being party to a crime of first degree reckless endangerment of safety. Shane D. Merchant, 37, of 412 First Ave. is charged with an identical offense and has also pleaded not guilty to the charge. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Meeting Nov. 20 to explain plans to replace Eau Claire span on Highway Y

An environmental firm from Appleton has been drilling at the site of a bridge over the Eau Claire River on Highway Y in the town of Ackley as the Wisconsin Department of Transportation prepares to replace it. A meeting to discuss its plans will be held at the Ackley hall at highways HH and 64 starting at 5 p.m. on Nov. 20. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Marine program held here today, Veterans Day services set for Monday

The northwoods’ annual salute to veterans kicked off this morning, with a presentation marking the 238th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. Hospital unveils important step with cardiac facility

Langlade Hospital unveiled an important milestone in cardiac health care in Antigo on Wednesday. The hospital has earned the designation as a satellite center for the Aspirus Heart and Vascular Institute in Wausau, meaning patients here can be assured of receiving the same level and continuity of care as at the main campus in Wausau. City offers a taxpayer break

A slight increase in valuations will translate into a lower tax rate for city of Antigo property owners. Meeting as a committee of the whole Wednesday, the Antigo Common Council approved a 2014 budget that will result in a tax rate of $9.11 per $1,000 of assessed valuations, down 15 cents from 2013. That means that the owner of a $100,000 home within city limits will pay $911 to fund local government operations, a decline of $15 from last year. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Vacancy still unfilled: School board hears from candidates

Members of the Antigo school board Tuesday praised the slate of seven candidates expressing an interest in a vacant board seat, and then failed to appoint any of them to fill the slot. At a 2 1/2 hour meeting, the board interviewed the candidates—including three with previous school board experience—for the ninth and potentially swing vote position.
