School board eyes $400,000 from fund balance to cover major projects

The Antigo school board will discuss using $400,000 from the district fund balance to cover deferred maintenance projects, and may also tweak the process used to fill a school board vacancy Tuesday. Housing Authority wins grant for project

Renovations to Park View Manor, home of the Antigo Housing Authority, will begin next spring, nourished by a $700,000 federal housing award The Authority has been awarded a $700,000—the largest award to a rental housing project in the state of Wisconsin—to supplement a tax credit award received in April for the renovation and modernization of Park View Manor. City residents getting tax bills in the mail Saturday

City of Antigo residents will find an expected—but probably unwelcomed—present stuffed among the Christmas cards and sales flyers in their mailboxes this weekend. Federal jury trial set Feb. 18 in Hunter drug case

A jury trial has been set Feb. 18 for 35-year-old John M. Hunter of Antigo on federal drug charges. Hunter was indicted by a grand jury earlier this year on a single count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. He entered a plea of not guilty to the count during an arraignment hearing Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Green Bay. Read more: Antigo Daily Journal

Elcho man flees from deputy, caught in home

An Elcho man who allegedly refused to stop when signaled and then tried to escape capture by running into his home is being charged with obstructing an officer. The incident occurred at about 2:15 a.m. today when a Langlade County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop the car because of a malfunctioning headlamp and because it was not properly registered. Aldermen fuss, approve plans to acquire vacant city properties

Members of the Antigo Common Council have mixed feelings on involving the city in real estate transactions in the downtown core. At its regular monthly session Wednesday, aldermen approved the purchase of a vacant parcel of property overhanging Spring Brook, and agreed to take ownership of a empty downtown business location, but not without dissent. What appears to be a major drug, bath salts operation uncovered here

Area law officers may have gotten the break they needed in shutting down a major bath salt operation with the arrest of a former Antigo woman and the subsequent search of an Aniwa area residence. Criminal charges are still pending against individuals whose Shawano County home was raided Tuesday but officials stress that the allegations are serious and may link those involved to the distribution of large quantities of the drug which has run rampant through the area over the last several months. Probation for woman linked to drug use with teens at Antigo home

A woman accused of allowing and joining area teens in the ingestion of illegal drugs, specifically marijuana, at her rural Antigo home has been given a year to prove she should not be convicted of a felony charge.

Tamie J. Yarie, 44, of N2448 Crestwood Road was placed on probation for one year Monday after entering pleas of no contest in Langlade County Circuit Court to three criminal counts.

Local boy the victim of cold weather prank

It could have been a movie scene from the holiday classic “A Christmas Story,” but there was no word if the act was triggered by a “double dog dare.” Antigo rescue personnel were called to the vicinity of Deleglise Street and Fourth Avenue late Thursday afternoon on the report that a 13-year-old boy had gotten his tongue stuck on a metal pole. Christmas event was a success

The turnout for the annual Christmas chili cook-off and parade offered proof that Antigonians will put up with cold and snow, but when it comes to a frigid rain, it is a different story. The crowds on the street for the usually packed event were down a bit, but there were still plenty to devour dozens and dozens of roasters of chili, applaud floats and cheer the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. Wolf River Fire Department plans annual open house for Saturday

The Wolf River Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual community open house on Saturday. The holiday event features the firefighters’ chili cook-off, holiday treats, and the collection of canned goods for the local food pantry.
