Job Description: Under close to moderate supervision a Biotech I will provide animal husbandry, animal care, assist in the conduct of experimental procedures, cage wash duties, and general laboratory cleanup The general responsibilities include: • Operation of cage washing equipment (cage washers, autoclaves etc.) • Monitoring of cage wash chemicals • Perform cage wash equipment temperature testing and documentation • Washing, autoclaving and preparation of animal caging and equipment • Washing and sanitation of miscellaneous facility equipment • Facility sanitation • Waste Disposal • Inventory and stocking of supplies used for husbandry and experimental procedures • Receipt and quarantine of rodents • General animal husbandry of rodents • Recognize and report common signs of clinical illness of rodents • Assist with blood collection, necropsy, and surgery • Assist with processing of blood or other biological samples • Handling, restraint, weaning, sexing and identification methods of rodents • Maintain accurate written or electronic records for assigned areas • Perform euthanasia of assigned animals when necessary • General support tasks including preparation and set up of experimental work stations, animal restraint, tube labeling, documentation, forms, etc. A Biotech I must be able to follow SOP’s and demonstrate proficiency for assigned tasks, follow basic federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and policies pertaining to laboratory animals, and LAMD security policies and procedures Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year of husbandry experience working on rodents. Certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science or equivalent education in the life Sciences field is desirable. Job requires routine lifting of items such as food and bedding bagsacks of water bottles, and pushing of carts and racks of animals and supplies, and frequent contact with rodents. Must possess excellent interpersonal, organizational and communications skills (written, oral and comprehension). Must be willing and able to work holidays, weekends and to adjust schedule to facilitate workload within the department.
