County Board OKs insurance charges, passes forest grant plan

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors approved a balancing act that will increase health insurance premiums for unions that did not go along with an Act 10 change dating to early 2012. Those unions have enjoyed reduced health insurance rates and for the next eight months of 2013 the increase is being sought to even the scales with unions that agreed to the increases earlier and the non-union employees. Woman charged with injecting morphine into child admits guilt

District Attorney Ralph Uttke said today he would ask a judge to order an Antigo woman to pay travel costs for the medical care of young girl who acquired Hepatitis C after being forcibly injected with morphine. The request will officially be made during a sentencing hearing scheduled May 29 for 20-year old Nicole Bessert who pleaded guilty to two criminal charges. They include a felony count of physical abuse of a child, intentionally causing harm, and a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a child. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Local teen jailed on marijuana charges

A local teen was arrested Sunday on suspicion of drug use — and potentially its sale — as the result of a single vehicle accident south of Antigo. Authorities said the 17-year old was taken into custody on allegations of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia. The case has been forwarded to the district attorney’s office for prosecution. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Three months jail for Lund

In an eloquent and emotional address, John Lund apologized to the community, his family, friends and the court for a costly dalliance with marijuana. The decorated educator, administrator and coach in the Antigo Unified School District was sentenced Thursday to spend three months in jail, 18 months on probation and do 200 hours of community service on what ended as one felony count involving the manufacture or delivery of marijuana. Antigo man arrested at home on bath salt allegation

An Antigo man was released from custody on a $1,000 signature bond today following his early morning arrest on allegations he was in possession of suspected bath salts. Jason R. Bauknecht, 24, of 514 Morse St. was charged in Langlade County Circuit Court today with a misdemeanor offense of possession with intent to abuse a hazardous substance. Attorney general says no to county idea to buy gold

The gold bugs on the Langlade County Board of Supervisors have been quieted. Some members of the board have expressed an interest in putting some of the investable funds into gold to bring a better return that dismal rates now offered on secure commercial investments, but Wisconsin’s Attorney General, J.B. Girl Scout cookie debt may have been motive in CoVantage robbery

A bizarre bank robbery in Shawano County Monday may have been tied to the sale of Girl Scout cookies. Darrin H. Church, 47, is charged in connection with the robbery at CoVantage Credit Union’s Shawano office just after 3:30 p.m. Monday Bank employees at CoVantage, where Church is a customer, told police Church had been in the bank three times that day before handing a teller a note demanding money. Woman in court on drug house charges

Bail was set at $1,000 cash and subsquently posted Thursday for a woman accused of allowing and allegedly joining area teens in ingesting illegal drugs at her rural Antigo home.

Tamie J. Yarie, 43, of N2448 Crestwood Road stands charged in Langlade County Circuit Court with four criminal offenses — the most serious, a felony, alleging she maintained a place for the purpose of trafficking drugs.

Sports conference makes schedule changes, cites weather

The Great Northern Conference, which has Antigo as its southern-most member and Eagle River and Minocqua on the north, decided Wednesday that the late winter of 2013 has won the battle. At a meeting of athletic directors in Tomahawk, the fact that snow is still piled on most baseball and softball diamonds, golf courses, track and field sites and soccer fields, sports activities will not be held now or in the immediate future.
