Dentist returns home to practice

Chad Boers, a 1997 graduate of Antigo High School and son of Tom and Sue Boers, has returned to Antigo to open a dental practice on the city’s north end. The aptly named Northside Dental is a modern dental practice with state-of-the-art equipment and provides a wide scope of dental services for all ages including cleanings, crowns, extractions, fillings, partial and complete dentures, whitenings, tooth guards, root canals, implant restorations and instant digital x-rays. Weather better, but loons are still troubled

The bizarre spring weather has improved in the Antigo area, but it is still leaving dozens, perhaps hundreds, of loons stranded following last week’s “fall-out.” Over the weekend Marge Gibson and the staff at the Antigo-based Raptor Education Group Inc. rescued 49 loons that had literally fallen from the sky, downed by icy rain, sleet and in some cases snow that struck the area Thursday and Friday. Lukas going for Derby record, but this will be a daunting mission

D. Wayne Lukas has already broken most Kentucky Derby records, and he’ll shatter another two—and maybe more—on Saturday. The trainer considered the sport’s elder statesman will saddle Will Take Charge and Oxbow in Saturday’s Derby. The colts will be Lukas’ 46th and 47th Derby starters, the most of any trainer in the race’s 138-year history. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Unions ratify pact with likely paper mill buyer

The United Steelworkers (USW) and KPS Capital Partners have reached agreement on a new, four-year labor contracts with three local collective bargaining units. The agreements are a critical step toward the finalization of the purchase agreement between KPS and the former owners of Thilmany plants in the Fox Valley and Wausau Paper Company mills in Mosinee and Rhinelander. Another winter storm hits state with heavy snow, ice

Weather-watchers in Antigo and Langlade County are keeping a keen eye to the west today as a widespread storm is moving across the Upper Midwest — and if it arrives here the results won’t be that good. Western Wisconsin has been buried under more than a foot of new snow. Numerous school districts canceled classes, including Menomonie, River Falls, Chetek, Rice Lake, Barron and Durand. Not guilty pleas entered in local bath salt case

Pleas of not guilty were entered Friday in the case of an Antigo man who admitted to ingesting a drug known as “bath salts” hours before erupting into a rage at a downtown home late last year. Jerry W. Piper, 35, of 1224 Fifth Ave. was arrested Dec. 17, 2012 and charged with two felony counts of bail jumping as well as misdemeanor counts of causing criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct. Three charged in break-in to former Silver Dollar tavern

Criminal charges have been filed against a third man suspected in connection with a January break-in to a now-closed tavern in town of Rolling. David Illikainen, 20, of Aniwa was charged in Langlade County Circuit Court Monday with two felony counts of burglary including one at the former Silver Dollar tavern located Highway 45 south of Antigo. The second count involves a burglary at a town of Langlade cabin in February. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Drug arrests made in Forest County

Over 30 people face charges ranging from drug trafficking to making death threats to informants in conjunction with a wide-ranging investigation centered in Forest County. On Tuesday, the Forest County Sheriff’s Department released the names and some photographs of those charged in connection with a seven-month-long drug investigation into the sale and use of prescription drugs and marijuana. Chamber outing to Antigo pantry a success, many take a tour, visit

An Antigo/Langlade County Chamber of Commerce after hours program at the Antigo Area Community Food Pantry Tuesday was a tremendous success. The after hours programs are most successful when held in restaurants or lounges, but this one worked well, Deena Grabowsky, the chamber’s director, said as a crowd was taking tours and getting information on how the pantry worked. Jail terms ordered for three individuals cited in drug crimes

Three Antigo area residents were sentenced to jail terms here Friday following their convictions in Langlade County Circuit Court on a variety of drug-related offenses. The punishments ranged between 20 days for Andrew B. Muraski, 24, of W6611 Highway 64 in Bryant; 30 days for Chad R. Crum, 35, of 212 Eighth Ave.; and 90 days for Becky B. Peshtigo murder has wide impact across state, with AVAIL in Antigo

Michelle Arrowood, director of the AVAIL domestic shelter and advocacy group in Antigo is stunned with the death of Trish Waschbisch, who led the Rainbow House in Marinette, a service that mirrors the Antigo facility. Waschbisch was apparently murdered at her home in Peshtigo during the weekend. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Even warmth not expected to clear ice away from lakes in northern Wisconsin

A recent spate of seasonal—and even warm—weather isn’t likely to mean open water across the northwoods as anglers preparing for the inland fishing season on Saturday. The forecast calls for a return to unseasonably cold—and even ice-making conditions after today’s warmth and that may put a halt to the melting on Pelican, Pickerel, Rolling Stone, Moose and other lakes across the region. Colin Bastle, Morgan Burkhart lead prom

Morgan Burkhart and Colin Bastle reigned over Antigo High School prom activities Saturday evening, with the festive “Carnival” as the theme. Joining them on the court for “The Greatest Prom on Earth” were Brandon Bastle and Chase Gunderson, first runners-up; Steph Hanke and Randy Krebs, second runners-up; and Breanna Brennecke and Jake Zabrowski, third runners-up.
