Snow continues to fall here, but forecast shows some warming due

Early-risers in the northwoods were surprised to find a winter wonderland outside their windows today, the problem is that it is April 25. School district's cuts this year concentrate on staff

The Antigo school board Tuesday balanced its 2013-14 budget, approving the last in a series of staff reductions that will reduce proposed spending by almost $1 million. Action on the cuts was spread throughout the open and closed portions of the meeting, with the board inking a series of revisions to existing job descriptions that replace several vacant full-time positions with part-time jobs and then approving final layoffs in a subsequent closed session. Marijuana found during stop, woman charged

A Wabeno woman is in local custody today following a Monday night arrest on charges linking her to possible drug use and sales. Authorities said the 32-year old will be referred to the Langlade County district attorney’s office for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after she was found attempting to conceal four separately packaged bags of marijuana. Community Garden awaits better weather, 71 plots are available

With the forecast hinting at a return to more seasonable conditions later this week, planning is entering high gear for the upcoming community garden season. Clark Palmer joins school board, meeting set tonight

The Antigo school board is back at full strength today for the first time since mid-February, with a decided tilt toward conservative interests. At its reorganizational session Monday, the board welcomed three new members and appointed Clark Palmer, an outspoken advocate of rural education, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Miles Stanke in February. White Lake Historical Society makes way for new clinic project

The White Lake Historical Society has completed its move from its downtown center, paving the way for the renovation of the structure into a new clinic. The Society sold the building, located at the corner of Mill and Bissell Streets, to Langlade Hospital, which will operate the clinic in conjunction with the Northern Health Centers from Lakewood. Local traffic stops result in arrests for marijuana use

Instances of motorists and their passengers carting around drugs, particularly marijuana, were featured among the arrests made by Antigo police this past weekend. Six people are now awaiting formal prosecution in connection with the offenses including three individuals facing charges following a stop late Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of Clermont Street and Fourth Avenue. City housing projects win tax credits

Two multi-million housing projects in the city of Antigo—including construction of a new 50-unit apartment complex on the city’s north side—have won the backing of the state housing authority. The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority has allocated $412,785 in annual tax credits to the Antigo Housing Authority for a major renovation to Park View Manor. Six-time drunk driver sentenced to three year stay in prison cell

A Pelican Lake man who racked up his sixth offense of drunken driving earlier this year is now serving time in prison. James E. Greely Jr., 53, was sentenced in Langlade County Circuit Court this week to spend three years of incarceration. The sentence will run concurrent with a present sentence he is aleady serving and be followed by three years of extended supervision. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Removal of fire debris gets started

The cleanup of the rubble — and perhaps some treasures — from a March 20 blaze at the Peeps Pawn Shop located at 801 Fifth Ave., got started this morning. But unlike most demolition and cleanup projects, the crew from Krueger & Steinfest is carefully picking its way through the remains of the former pawn shop, where thousands of items ranging from musical instruments to guns were stored. Antigo council welcomes new faces Tuesday evening, Kassis is president

The Antigo Common Council welcomed a familiar face back to the chambers Tuesday, seating Phil Beck as Fifth Ward alderman. Beck, along with new Ninth Ward council member Daniel Bauknecht, were sworn in at the opening of the board’s reorganizational meeting. Also taking part in the ceremony were Joe Kapusta, First Ward; Jim Darling, Second Ward; and Glenn Bugni, Seventh Ward. All were re-elected without opposition in the April 2 balloting.
