Neva Grocery adds The Coffee Corner, with beverages and more

The beverages were steaming and the baked goods looked delicious as The Coffee Corner celebrated its grand opening this morning in Neva Corners. The cafe—the brainchild of Pam Becerra—is located adjacent to Neva Grocery & Gas, which she operates. Honor Flight — The Movie will be shown at Antigo theater March 10, 17

Tickets go on sale Friday for “Honor Flight—The Movie,” which will be shown at the Palace Twin Theater on Sunday, March 10 and March 17. This is the story of four World War II vets that flew on an Honor Flight originating in Milwaukee, very similar to the Honor Flights many Antigo and Langlade County residents have been on in the past three years. Staff in crosshairs as school cuts studied

The Antigo school board began cutting the 2013-14 budget Tuesday, and there are signs that the process could become brutal for staff members. At its regular monthly meeting, the board voted unanimously to eliminate four elementary teaching positions, largely due to declining enrollments, and two support staff positions, including one at central office that has been vacant since a December retirement. White Lake board thanks 24-year school secretary, plans to retire

The White Lake board of education accepted, with thanks, the retirement of longtime school secretary Georgia Heistad on Tuesday. At its regular monthly meeting, the board acknowledged the work of the secretary, who has been employed with the district for 24 years. She will be leaving on June 30. “The board wanted to thank her for her unconditional service and dedication to the White Lake students,” District Administrator Bill Fisher said. “She’s one-of-a-kind.” Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

School board to fill Stanke's post after the spring election

The Antigo school board will wait until after the spring election to fill the vacancy caused by the recent death of Miles Stanke, in order to give those who were unsuccessful at the ballot box a chance to apply. At Tuesday’s board of education meeting, members voted unanimously to post the position on April 3, the day after the election, with a goal of selecting a replacement at the board’s regular monthly session scheduled on April 23. School board to eye filling Stanke post, agenda busy

The Antigo school board will discuss how to fill the vacancy caused by the recent death of Miles Stanke when it meets Tuesday. The board will convene at 7 p.m. in the Middle School library and work its way through a very full agenda, which also includes decisions on substantial staff reductions at the elementary school level. Stanke, a retired educator and former city of Antigo mayor, was in the midst of his first term on the school board when he died on Feb. 13. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

DNR notes industrial water use

A leading Antigo industry uses a quarter-of-a-million gallons of water every working day from the city’s municipal water system, part of statewide industrial usage that tops 2 trillion gallons annually. According to the state Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin industries pull more than 2 trillion gallons of water from the state’s lakes, rivers and underground aquifers yearly. Health, performance, center takes shape

It’s not hyperbole to describe Langlade Hospital’s new health and wellness center, now taking shape just south of the General Clinic, as a cathedral to fitness. The hospital has been publicizing artist renditions of the facility, known formally as the Center for Health & Performance, since the project was announced in September but sketches can’t do justice to the sheer size and airiness of the structure. United FCS shares it financial success, distributes patronage checks

United FCS continues sharing its financial success with its member-owners in the form of 100 percent cash patronage —distributing $5.2 million in cash patronage. This patronage distribution (a return of a portion of the association's net earnings to eligible customers) raises the combined total patronage paid to over $60 million since 2002. New postal outlet opens in Pickerel convenience store as hours trimmed

The U.S. Postal Service held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at Lotter’s BP at Pickerel Thursday morning for the new postal center opening at its Highway 55 site.
