Rhinelander, Mosinee mills sold to investors, employees are hopeful

Wausau Paper is selling its mills in Rhinelander and Mosinee to a private equity firm for $130 million. KPS Capital Partners, of New York, plans to acquire another company that will be combined with the specialty paper business. The Rhinelander and Mosinee paper mills employ about 900 workers and produce technical specialty paper. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Fire destroys historic Antigo building

A fire at Peeps Pawn Shop Wednesday afternoon — the second this week — may forever be a mystery. It destroyed one of downtown Antigo’s historic buildings at Clermont Street and Fifth Avenue and brought out concerns that the flames might leap-frog to adjacent buildings in the 800 block of the city’s main street. 'Pajama Game' reopens for final shows at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Volm Theater

There are only three more opportunities to see Antigo High School’s production of “The Pajama Game,” and they begin tonight. The show, which features Daniel Bradley as Sid and Sam Sailer as Babe, returns to the Volm Theater stage tonight, Friday and Saturday, all at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door one hour before the curtain and good seats remain for all performances. County supervisors hear about 'bath salts'

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors heard reports to open its March meeting this morning. The supervisors welcomed Georgia Fischer from Bridge Community Health Clinic, which provides services here and has an aggressive project to improve its facilities in the Antigo Medical Building on Langlade Road, and Dan Bauknecht, a drug investigator with the Langlade County Sheriff’s Department and there was also an introduction of forestry employees including Richard Dedeyne, Lucas Williams and Nathan Williams. Sen. Tom Tiffany sells cruise boat, cites his growing responsibilities

Citing growing legislative responsibilities, a northern Wisconsin lawmaker has sold his popular river cruise business. Tom Tiffany, elected as 12th District senator in November after a stint as 35th District assemblyman, and Wayne Kulhanek, the owners of Wisconsin River Cruises, have sold the dinner and excursion operation to Patty and Ben Zastrow of Rhinelander. City donates burial spot for remains found in 2010

Archaeological remains uncovered during the excavation for a home foundation will be reburied, with a proper marker in Elmwood Cemetery following action by the Antigo Common Council Wednesday. At a speedy March session, aldermen unanimously approved a request from the Wisconsin Historical Society to have the city donate a single burial space in the Elmwood Cemetery pauper section for unclaimed remains found near the city. Langlade Springs bottles excellent water

“It’s the best water,” Jim Hose, plant manager at Langlade Springs, said this morning as hundreds and hundreds of bottles were moving on production lines at the Polar facility. Hose said more and more people are recognizing that the water from the natural mineral springs at Polar is pure, refreshing and has a taste that many other brands cannot match. Bath salts a factor in bee hallucination

An Antigo man who told officers he was trying to escape a swarm of bees Monday morning later admitted that he had smoked bath salts, a mind-altering drug, the night prior. The 33-year old was arrested on counts of disorderly conduct and bail jumping after police and Langlade County sheriff’s deputies were asked to check on a male who was acting suspiciously outside a Fifth Avenue residence. Two Antigo men jailed on bath salt sale, use allegations

Bail was set at $1,000 cash here Monday for an Antigo man accused of selling bath salts to an undercover informant. The laboratory-produced drug, which has hit the area hard in recent months and been cited in causing severe hallucinations along with other unusual behavior by those who use it, was a factor in two cases called before Langlade County Judge Fred Kawalski. Forest industries getting more critical

Figures just in from the 2011 U.S. Census show Wisconsin’s forests aren’t just growing trees, they are growing jobs, with nearly 60,000 people working in forest-related positions statewide in about 1,300 businesses. And with its first graduating class receiving their diplomas in just a few weeks, Northcentral Technical College’s new wood tech center in Antigo is beginning to play a key role. Aviator cited for survival work

Antigo native Joe Mosher, who narrowly escaped a fiery crash in Afghanistan in January, 2009, has been honored for making sure other aircraft and their crews can survive similar occurrences. Mosher, a chief warrant officer 3 with the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, was recently presented with the Army Aviation Association of America Aircraft Survivability Equipment Award. Started out at $500,000: Plea deal cuts big theft case

An Antigo woman accused of stealing an estimated $500,000 from her local employer has reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors. Susan Tatro, 44, was indicted in May of 2012 on 30 counts of wire fraud in an embezzlement scheme which occured between 2006 and 2011 at Waukesha Bearings Corp. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Pickerel man accused in repeated child sex assault case

Monday in Langlade County Circuit Court, James W. Conley, 46, was allowed release on a $10,000 signature bond on two criminal counts — a felony charge of repeated sexual assault of a child and a misdemeanor offense of sexual intercourse with a child. The felony count carries a maximum prison term of 60 years. According to court documents, Conley allegedly had contact with a teen girl on multiple occasions over a multi-year span... Burglary, drugs and sex counts result in jail terms for several here

A mix of activity rolled its way into the courtroom of Langlade County Judge Fred Kawalski this week. Travis J. Sikora, 24, of 1224 Fifth Ave. was sentenced to serve six months in jail on a charge of burglary dating to last summer.
