Second woman cited for drugging child

Bail was set in Langlade County Circuit Court this week for a second Antigo woman linked to the drugging of a 12-year old child. Erikka N. Vancos, 19, of 140 Morse St. was released from custody on a $2,500 signature bond on charges which include false imprisonment, physical abuse of a child and contributing to the delinquency of a child. A co-defendant, 20-year old Nicole L. Bessert, also of 140 Morse St., is also charged with identical offenses plus a felony count of intimidation of a victim. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Local hospital mapping future area health needs

Langlade Hospital is mapping out future health care needs across the northwoods, and it is using local residents as its guide. As part of a comprehensive effort to determine the most troubling health issues in the region, hospital officials will be conducting four town hall meetings beginning next week. “We are asking people what they feel are the most significant health problems affecting people in Langlade County,” Dave Schneider... School election here remains cloudy

Primary elections are all about losers, not winners so the results in the race for the Antigo school board remain cloudy today. The top six of eight candidates in the race advance for to the spring general election on April 2, but only two votes separate number six, James Schulz, and number seven, Nick Novy. One of those two will join Andy Merry, Roseann Hoffman, Tara Fermanich Guelzow, Tim Fuller and Jessica Meade on the spring ballot. The other will join Arthur Bostwick, who polled eighth. School referendums do very well in North

Northwoods school district voters were in a giving mood on Tuesday. Preliminary results from Tuesday’s election show that school spending referendums were successful in Rhinelander, Eagle River and Three Lakes, assuring the future of teaching staff and programs for at least the next several years. The vote was being watched closely by other districts contemplating referendums, including Elcho, which has scheduled an April 2 vote on a $400,000, four-year plan. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Keep bird feeders full, cold is taking a big toll

The brutally cold weather of the past several days, plus predictions for more, have left some of the northwoods smallest residents in rather dire straits. According to Marge Gibson, executive director of the Antigo-based Raptor Education Group Inc., the cold conditions have been causing problems for birds such as pine siskins and red-polls, which weight only eight to 16 grams and spend their summers in the very far northern regions. Few voters show at polls

Blustery winter weather plus only one local race are keeping most voters at home for today’s primary election. Residents of the Antigo school district are trimming two candidates for the field for three available seats on the board of education while across the state voters are trimming one person from the filed for Wisconsin Supreme Court justice. Turnout for the election was predicted to be less than 10 percent. A wintry blast of weather across the state, with cold temperatures and snow in the forecast, could also keep voter numbers down. Hospital leads campaign to lose weight, over a half-ton of fat vanished

Over half-a-ton of flab and fat disappeared during Langlade Hospital’s annual weight loss challenge, held over the holidays. According to Eric Tischendorf, employees at 17 companies stretching from Mosinee to Eagle River participated in this season’s challenge, held between the Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day holidays. Manitowoc couple experience plane woes over Elcho, all ends fairly well

A couple from Manitowoc was “extremely lucky” Sunday afternoon in northern Langlade County. The bad luck came first when they experienced engine problems in the smaller Cessna aircraft above Elcho. The good luck followed when they were able to put the single-engine plane down in a rough field southeast of the community with no injuries to the pilot, and non-life threatening problems for his wife. Antigo school voters to trim field for board of education Tuesday

Voters in the Antigo Unified School District will go to the polls on Tuesday to narrow the field of candidates for three seats on the board of education. The primary promises to be a spirited one, with incumbents Roseann Hoffman, the board president, and Andy Merry joined on the ballot by Arthur Bostwick, James Schulz, Jessica Meade, Nick Novy, Tara Fermanich Guelzow, and Tim Fuller. County Board looks at a quiet agenda

After a quick meeting in January, the Langlade County Board of Supervisors appears to have another quiet agenda for the February meeting Tuesday. The session begins at 9 p.m. on the lower level of the Safety Building. The public is welcome to attend. Representatives from the Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin are scheduled to attend to urge the county’s support for its bid to create an off-reservation gaming venture in Kenosha. Dozens of sled dog teams race in Langlade County

ANTIGO (WAOW) - Hundreds of sled dogs raced for the finish line in Antigo. It was a welcome sight for the teams. For the past two years, the Langlade County Trailblazer Challenge was canceled because of the weather. "It has been kind of a let down each year cause we do put a lot of work into the race each year, hoping that we'll get snow the week or two before but unfortunately we haven't had that," said Antigo and Langlade Co. Three candidates seek positions on CoVantage board, meeting Wednesday

Members of CoVantage Credit Union will select directors, review financial reports and hear plans for 2013 and beyond at the organization’s 60th annual meeting Wednesday. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Volm Theater at Antigo High School. All credit union members are encouraged to attend the meeting where they will be asked to participate in electing two members to the credit union's board of directors. Antigo man to be sentenced on two heroin sale counts

A rural Antigo man arrested in connection with an investigation linked to the local distribution of heroin will wait until April before learning his punishment. Tuesday in Langlade County Circuit Court, Kenneth Rockstroh, 60, of W9277 Highway F pleaded no contest to two charges involving the drug’s sale or manufacture. Two additional counts were dismissed as were charges of maintaining a place for the trafficking of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and bail jumping. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Wayward pony breaks into field, enjoys quite an overnight adventure

This is a true horse tail, er, tale. It all started early Wednesday morning, when Debra Tetting looked out the bay window at her Highway AA home and spotted an intruder in her horse pasture. Antigo Common Council holds a very quick meeting

With most of its resolutions approved under a single motion, the Antigo Common Council may have set a new record for quick meetings Wednesday. In under 10 minutes, aldermen worked through a February agenda that included tweaking the rules for the facade grant program and levying special assessments for sidewalks. Folk singer Bill Staines will make his annual swing through Antigo

Nationally acclaimed folk singer Bill Staines will return to Antigo Tuesday for an evening performance at Edison Club Event Center. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. Like a troubadour, Staines is touring the nation from his home in New Hampshire. Successful project: Council to eye facade work

The Antigo Common Council is expected to make a few tweaks to the popular facade grant program, ensuring the availability of cash for business fix-up projects, when it convenes Wednesday. Aldermen will meet for the regular February session at 6 p.m. in the chambers at City Hall.
