Antigo woman gets prison for forced drugging of girl

An Antigo woman is going to prison for forcibly injecting a 12-year old girl with morphine. In an emotionally-charged hearing Wednesday in Langlade County Circuit Court, 20-year-old Nicole L. Bessert was sentenced to serve three years of incarceration for the assault which subsequently resulted in her victim testing positive for Hepatitis C. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

White Lake backs staff changes, contracts

The White Lake board of education approved new contracts for District Administrator Bill Fisher and Principal Glenda Butterfield-Boldig covering the next two school years. Following a closed session discussion Tuesday, the board inked the agreements with Boldig, a full-time principal, and Fisher, whose duties are split between Elcho and White Lake. Alleged tire-slashers jailed on cash bonds

Bail was set here Tuesday at $3,000 cash for each of the two men arrested in a weekend vandalism spree which targeted close to a dozen vehicles parked along Antigo streets and lots. Terry L. Mishler, 21, of 313 Superior St. and Zachary Blahnik, 23, of W11030 Bear Lake Road were each charged in Langlade County Circuit Court with being party to a crime of causing criminal damage to property. Two jailed here for slashing tires

Two Antigo men are in custody today awaiting charges in connection with a weekend tire-slashing spree which cost their victims hundreds if not thousands of dollars in damage. The men, ages 21 and 23, were caught early Saturday when an individual residing in the 700 block of Clermont Street heard a commotion and spotted the men committing the act. Courthouse services spark Memorial Day

Stressing service, sacrifice and commitment, the northwoods on Monday honored those who have fallen in time of war. Parade and ceremonies were held across the region, including a poignant remembrance that brought a substantial crowd to the Veterans Memorial on the Courthouse Square hosted by the local Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations. White Lake commencement held Saturday, grads few, hall packed

For the students at White Lake, graduation is just not a celebration for those who are recipients of diplomas. It’s one shared by an entire community. Local clubs will offer guided rides for free ATV weekend

The first annual ATV Free Wheel'n Weekend will be held next Saturday and Sunday, and local clubs are organizing some special events. On June 1 and 2, Wisconsin's public ATV/UTV trails will be open free of charge to riders from out-of-state as well as Wisconsinites whose machines are registered for private or agricultural use. Felony charges filed in local heroin death dating to 2009

A local heroin death dating to 2009 has returned to the forefront with the filing of felony charges against two individuals at whose Antigo home the 47-year old died.

Shane D. Merchant, 37, now of 1325 Third Ave. and Melissa L. Merchant, 30, of Wausau were both charged in Langlade County Circuit Court this week with a felony charge of being party to a crime of first degree reckless endangerment of safety. A conviction carries a maximum prison term of 12 1/2 years, up to $25,000 in fines or both.

Drivers in hospital area get pedestrian warning

Pedestrians in the very busy area of Langlade Hospital have an extra measure of safety today, due to a rather unique partnership between the city and medical facility. Crews from the city’s Department of Public Works Monday installed new solar-powered strobe lights marking crossways at Fifth Avenue and Aurora Street. The lights will be activated by pedestrians and will flash for 30 seconds on both sides of Fifth Avenue. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Deal reached for important sale on Rhinelander, Mosinee paper mills

The Rhinelander and Mosinee paper mills have a new owner, and a new name—Expera Specialty Solutions LLC. On Monday, Wausau Paper Corp. and KPS Capital Partners LP, a New York private equity firm, announced the final agreement to transfer ownership of the two mills, known as Wausau Specialty Papers, which will join with Thilmany facilities in DePere and Kaukauna to become the largest specialty paper manufacturer in the U.S. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal
