Communicate with appropriate interdisciplinary team members on a regular basis. Obtain routine laboratory work to include routine adequacy testing. Details: Collects and processes specimens from inpatients, outpatients and nursing home patients using proper procedures and universal precautions. Collects urine specimens for drug testing following established guidelines. Interacts with patients, laboratory staff, lab client staff, physicians, nursing and other hospital staff. Is the first line public relations representative of the laboratory. Performs minimal waived and moderately complex testing. Interacts with and collects specimens from patients of all age groups from newborn to geriatric. Essential Functions: Provides Excellent Customer Service. Participates in process improvement activities in phlebotomy and customer service improvement and service recovery. Performs venipuncture or microcollection procedures on patients with a minimum of discomfort following established identification and labeling policies. Uses safety collection devices when performing phlebotomy. May perform therapeutic phlebotomy procedures. Collects urine drug specimens, paternity specimens and legal blood alcohol specimens following protocols established. Assesses physical, emotional and developmental needs of patients so that specimens collected from patients of all ages are appropriate and adequate for laboratory testing. Performs designated computer operations, including accessioning patients and result inquiry. Works ON-CALL hours and reports to work within 30 minutes of call. Performs waived testing such as Instacup drug testing, and moderately complex testing such as bleeding times. Interacts positively with hospital staff, patients and clients to answer questions or explain procedures. May train MLT Students and new employees. May train personnel in other departments such as nursing to perform phlebotomy procedures in their areas. Attends mandatory inservice training and department meetings and takes personal responsibility for learning through continuing education. Performs bleeding times according to written protocol. May respond to codes, traumas and other emergencies. Additional Responsibilities: Additional duties as may be assigned by your supervisor, the section heads or charge technologist.
