Details: NATURE OF ASSIGNMENTS / DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the R&D Manager – Technical Services, utilizes technical knowledge and background of polymers to: • Interface and work with cross-functional teams of R&D Chemists, Processing Engineers, QA personnel, and Commercial Sales Team to solve complex technical problems. • Lead in the characterization and identification of unknown materials and contaminants through application of appropriate scientific methods. • Have a core understanding of characterization techniques such as thermal analysis (DSC, TGA, TMA), rheology, spectroscopy (IR, MS, UV-Vis), optical and electronic microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (XRF, Neutron activation), particle size analysis and chromatography (GC, HPLC, GPC/SEC). • Understand structure-property relationships to predict processing, application, and long-term service life behavior of polymeric materials. Structure-properties may include melt and melt strength, crystallization and crystallinity, HDT, elasticity, ductility, modulus, yield, viscosity and flow, and surface adhesion and science. • Utilizes wet chemistry and bench techniques to separate and/or extract components of interest from polymeric mixtures. • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and interpret data from the analytical instruments, especially: o Thermal instruments (DSC, TGA, & TMA) o Rheometers (capillary, rotational rheometer) & DMA o Mechanical property testing instruments (tensile & elongation, flex, compression, & impact testing) o Spectrometers (FT-IR, py-GC/MS) o Digital optical microscope o Xe arc accelerated weatherometers • Maintain current knowledge of state of the art analytical instrumentation and analytical techniques. • Utilizes basic statistical analysis to assist in evaluating data obtained from analytical instruments. • Documents, analyzes, interprets and summarizes test results in detailed laboratory notebooks. • Write detailed technical reports to communicate findings to Senior Management and Commercial Sales Team.
