Non-Food Packaging Manager

Exempt employees normally work between (40) to fifty (50) hours per week. The expectation is an annual average of no less than forty-five (45) hours per week. General Description: Manages and performs hard goods packaging functions; development of packaging specifications for new and existing items, identifying sources of high damage and coordinating efforts to find resolutions, setting packaging standards and validating vendor compliance, performing packaging specification and taping audits, leading cross-functional teams through selection and implementation of new packaging equipment and/or new materials. Leads effort to set short and long-range packaging and product protection strategies. Develops and implements packaging guidelines which are small parcel carrier efficient, customer friendly, and cost effective. Serves as hard goods packaging liaison for internal departments. Specific Responsibilities: 1. Manages and performs packaging development for Non-Food (NF) company items. (30-40%) A. Manages the NF catalog packaging development process including: 1. Monitors and improves current packaging development procedures. 2. Works with Merchandising, Quality Assurance (QA), Accounting, Forecasting and Operations to validate information flow, documentation handling, packaging material requirements, and equipment requirements. 3. Assigns responsibilities within departmental staff and monitors workload to ensure expected completion dates are met. 4. Assists with completing packaging development responsibilities when workload or catalog development schedules require it. B. Validates that all vendor requests for missing or incomplete data are distributed shortly after a catalog presentation. C. Works with product vendors or packaging staff to develop unique packaging for combinable and ship-alone products that are fragile or have a history of high damages. D. Ensures all packaging specification functions are performed and information provided to internal departments within specified timelines. 2. Manages and trains packaging staff. (20-30%) A. Monitors the workflow to prevent delays and ensures all packaging-related needs of the NF catalog staff are met. B. Directs all activities in an efficient manner. C. Promotes a team atmosphere. D. Facilitates regular meetings with packaging staff. E. Provides honest and timely performance feedback to packaging staff. F. Develops packaging staff for advancement opportunities. 3. Coordinates and performs product damage reduction efforts. (20-30%) A. Analyzes damage performance reports, Customer Service feedback and other information sources to determine effectiveness of existing damage control programs. 1. Works with packaging team to identify and implement strategies for reducing damages to acceptable levels. 2. Observes warehouse environments and packaging performance by regularly visiting fulfillment sites and customer returns processing area. 3. Provides direction to staff or immediately takes corrective action, as determined by the specific issue and/or time constraints. B. Ensures steps are taken to prevent and correct damage including the timely implementation of any packaging-related improvements. 1. Coordinates efforts to validate vendors' compliance with product testing requirements. 2. Ensures that internal audits are performed on all inbound large ship alone items. 3. Develops and distributes warehouse storage/handling guidelines to reduce damages caused by outbound order fulfillment and/or long-term storage. 4. Manages efforts to validate that internal packaging equipment (tapers, carton erectors, etc.) are performing at optimum levels. 5. Validates that all packaging-related Discrepant Material Reports (DMRs) are assigned to the appropriate Packaging Engineer, processed in a timely fashion, and proposed resolutions made available to appropriate departments. 6. Initiates steps to prevent future shipments of items with unacceptable damage rates or high risk of injury to customers, employees and/or carriers. C. Reports damage frequency to Merchandising, Inventory Management and QA on a regular basis. 4. Provides guidance on selection of packaging equipment and packaging materials for NF Fulfillment Operations. A. Manages efforts to select, purchase and install new packaging equipment. 1. Collaborates with Fulfillment management to fully document immediate and future requirements. 2. Contacts vendor partners to identify available options. 3. Develops equipment comparisons and organizes data reviews. 4. Coordinates completion of equipment Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and approved purchases. 5. Validates that equipment is manufactured to custom specifications, as necessary. 6. Ensures equipment installation is completed on time. 7. Ensures equipment performs as expected. B. Develops strategies for introducing cost effective and damage resistant packaging materials. 1. Coordinates departmental reviews of existing packaging. 2. Promotes selection and use of materials that provide improved performance. 3. Maintains optimum volume of unique packaging alternatives. 5. Promotes development of small parcel carrier efficient outbound packaging. A. Monitors effectiveness of cartonization software. 1. Provides resources to audit accuracy of cartonization software carton selections. 2. Works with Operations Systems staff to resolve identified issues. 3. Validates any changes are implemented in a timely manner. B. Fosters use of Carrier-efficient packaging. 1. Partners with Parcel Logistics management to identify packaging characteristics that increase outbound postage expenses. 2. Ensures packaging/labeling requirements provided in Vendor Manual clearly identify problem areas and related impacts. 3. Takes necessary steps to limit use of non-carrier-efficient outbound packaging. 6. Develops strategies for collection and reporting on NF Packaging key performance metrics. A. Organizes development of data collection tools. B. Works with packaging staff to develop reports and identify distribution frequency. C. Facilitates meetings to review and analyze results. D. Coordinates data validation, as needed. E. Ensures reports are distributed to appropriate management. 7. Provides internal communication to multiple departments, regarding NF packaging requirements. A. Serves as a resource person for QA, Resource Planning, Traffic, Merchandising, Inventory Management, Operations, Accounting and Customer Service. B. Promotes and fosters communications within department, between departments and with external contacts. 1. Visits all NF Fulfillment sites to collect feedback on primary packaging and packaging-related equipment conditions, as scheduled. C. Provides high-level customer service. 8. Performs and/or oversees miscellaneous packaging projects to best support the packaging objectives. 9. Travels to trade shows, shippers, or vendors to learn more about new technologies, equipment, software or processes that will improve packaging-related areas. 10. This position is located in Madison, WI, but will interface regularly with center specification resources in Glenview as well as each OMBU manufacturing facility as assigned. Specification Managers require a thorough working knowledge of the Interspec application, specification commercialization and approval process. Experience within the integrated supply chain supporting project management, application of Six Sigma tools and first hand implementation of specification content will be valued. Responsibilities Creating, adapting and managing all material, product, and package specifications through coordination with R&D process, product and packaging developers, regulatory, micro, procurement, master data, continuous improvement, suppliers, co-manufacturers and Integrated Supply Chain resources. Ensuring specifications include consumer driven Critical to Quality criteria, instructions that are transferrable, accurate and achievable. Ensuring data accuracy across Interspec, MDM and business enterprise systems such as SAP and Quality Suite. Align with assigned business category and ISC resources maintaining requisite business processes to deliver right first time specifications for each commercialization.
