Additional certification/ trade school education preferred. The Zoo is open week-ends and holidays, so our Maintenance staff work weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. You may be required to work different shifts, will respond to calls 24/7, and may be required to carry a pager. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Provides support to the Senior Mechanic with inspections and repairs of all Zoo rides and vehicles. Maintains, replaces, or repairs the machinery and equipment of the Zoo and its buildings as requested by the Facilities Manager and keeps all in good working order Performs general maintenance duties that include but are not limited to plumbing, electrical and HVAC. This position will be responsible for the specialty vehicle maintenance work assignments for the Zoo, maintaining vehicles on a scheduled basis Is responsible to assist in the overall maintenance and repairs of the Zoo rides (train, roller coaster, carousel, skyline and 4D Theater). Will assist in the ongoing training of other departmental trades for the daily rides inspection. Advises department Facilities Manager on all safety related issues and needs as it relates to rides and vehicles. Assist in the decision making process as to whether a ride might need to be closed down or a vehicle might need to be removed from the vehicle pool. Arrange and schedule an equipment preventative maintenance program for Zoo equipment. Safely operates aerial work platforms such as an 80ft boom lift and a 30ft scissor lift. Maintains accurate and detailed maintenance and inspection records for all of the Zoo’s rides, and assists in the annual state rides inspection. SKILLS AND ABILITIES Have a solid working knowledge of automotive systems. Possess practical skills and proficient knowledge in two or more trades, such as: mechanical, electrical, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, welding and small combustion engine repair and maintenance. Experience in amusement ride operation and repair is strongly preferred. Have a valid Indiana driver’s license and be insurable by the Zoo’s insurance carrier. Ability to weld and solder. Ability to read and follow blueprints. Climb ladders and scaffolding, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling and lifting. Physically required to lift heavy work which includes exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather, exposed to temperatures ranging from -10 to 90+ degrees. Works around equipment that has a significant noise level. Will be working around mechanical moving parts, live electrical circuits and exposed to dusty conditions and pollens. Will be exposed to various solvents and cleaning solutions. Must be able to wear proper safety equipment including dust masks, respirators, goggles, hearing protectors and safety harness. Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Blood borne Pathogens Guidelines. Possible occupational exposure (Category A employee) to human blood borne pathogens.
