Details: JOB SUMMARY: The objectives of the job are to (1) inspect the condition of boilers, related equipment, and other heavy sheet metal components; (2) trouble shoot and repair malfunctions in boilers, tanks, and drums; (3) fabricate assemble, and/or modify boiler systems; (4) operate shop machines and tools; (5) maximize locomotive availability through quality workmanship and (6) assure safety for self and coworkers. JOB DUTIES: INSPECT THE CONDITION OF BOILERS, RELATED EQUIPMENT (TANKS, DRUMS, PRESSURE VESSELS) AND HEAVY SHEET METAL COMPONENTS (13 gauge or heavier) . Inspect pressure vessel equipment to determine if physical aspects (sounds, smells, visual appearance, movement) meets standards; evaluate impact of problems on operations and safety. TROUBLESHOOT AND REPAIR MALFUNCTIONS IN BOILER SYSTEMS AND OTHER HEAVY SHEET METAL SYSTEMS . Identify situations that are likely to develop into problems; evaluate whether to repair or replace substandard or malfunctioning equipment and structures. FABRICATE, ASSEMBLE, AND MODIFY BOILER SYSTEMS AND HEAVY SHEET METAL COMPONENTS . Lay out, fit, and verify measurements for any sheet metal work of 13 gauge or heavier; fabricate or assemble parts and components by using welding, riveting, bolting, and soldering; hammer, file, or grind irregular edges to fit parts together; work may include fabricating locomotive and other parts such as fronts, doors, running boards, truck frames, derricks, booms, etc. WORK WITH SHOP MACHINES AND TOOLS . Safely and effectively operate the following: machines such as drill and punch presses, bench lathes; power tools such as drills, impact wrenches, power saws, and grinders; acetylene torches; non power tools; electric and gas welding equipment; operate overhead hoists and jacks to lift parts to specified positions. PRACTICE SAFE WORK HABITS . Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures; wear prescribed safety apparel, take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety of self or coworkers; ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting work. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: READ AND UNDERSTAND JOB INFORMATION WRITTEN IN ENGLISH . Must be able to read, understand posted bulletins, regulations, rule books, and manufacturer manuals. COMMUNICATE WITH COWORKERS . Must be able to provide advisory/alert information to coworkers; use discussion to coordinate work with coworkers; explain technical information to people who lack background in the area. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION . Must be able to accurately transcribe numbers, letters, or words onto forms, such as supply requisitions and inspection reports. TROUBLESHOOTING . Must be able to identify and use common shop tools, instruments, and machines described above; have mechanical comprehension sufficient to troubleshoot malfunctions and specify corrective actions; knowledge of FRA laws pertaining to locomotive repair. TEAMWORK . Must be able to work in a team environment that requires cooperating with others, offering help when needed, and maintaining positive working relationships. VISION AND HEARING . Must be able to make quick visual inspections and comparisons at near distances to determine if objects meet specifications; must be able to detect and interpret visual color signals and displays (wayside and yard signals, equipment gauges) at near and far distances; detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and tests; depth perception to judge speed and distance of locomotives being moved in service area. PERFORM PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES . Must be able to exert physical strength sufficient to lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing from 25 lbs. frequently, and occasionally up to 50 lbs. (usually with assistance); climb stairs and ladders and maintain balance while working on equipment or around moving equipment occasionally; perform occasional functions while bending or stooping; perform occasional overhead work for short periods of time; remain standing or sitting for more than one-half of every work day with the opportunity periodically to change position for comfort. WORK CONDITIONS: Employees must be willing and able to perform the essential functions for this job title under the following work conditions. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT . Some assignments may be performed out of doors involving exposure to all weather conditions (infrequently); must be able to climb and work (occasionally) at elevations more than 12 feet above ground level; exposure to shop noise at levels requiring ear protections.
