Man found mentally ill in deadly beating

MADISON - A homeless man has been ordered committed to a state mental hospital for up to 46 years for the fatal beating of another homeless man in Madison.

Thirty-three-year-old Justin Brooks pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree reckless homicide. Brooks was accused of beating 61-year-old Robert Kuntz with a table leg as Kuntz slept on the Capitol Square nearly a year ago.

Four people quit committee fighting drunk driving

MADISON - The executive director of the Tavern League of Wisconsin says he is surprised to hear that four members of a drunken driving task force have resigned.

Those resigning sent a letter to the state Department of Transportation on Thursday saying the DOT has shown little interest in their input developing a meaningful plan to address drunken driving in Wisconsin.

Tomahawk group to open first Lincoln County homeless shelter

TOMAHAWK - Homeless people and families in the Northwoods often struggle for a place to stay. For example, the Frederick Place shelter in Rhinelander has only been around for five years.

Lincoln County doesn't have a homeless shelter. That has forced homeless people in Tomahawk and Merrill to shelters in Rhinelander and Wausau.

Finding underground utility service lines, preventing digging accidents

WISCONSIN - You can accidentally hit a natural gas line when digging in your yard. That's why Wisconsin Public Service leaders want you to call the state's Diggers Hotline before you start digging outside.

There are many different utility lines like electric, natural gas, and cable buried underground. WPS locators will find and mark every line underground for free. Each service line is marked with a different colored flag.

Rhinelander Police Chief selected for state's Law Enforcement Standards Board

RHINELANDER - Rhinelander's Police Chief will represent the Northwoods on the state's Law Enforcement Standards Board. The board makes policies for every law enforcement agency in Wisconsin.

Chief Michael Steffes will help the board understand how smaller agencies work. He believes that'll help the group create policies that work with agencies of all sizes.

Attorneys argue over details of injection and circumstances in overdose case

MERRILL - Prosecutors in Lincoln County accuse a Northwoods woman of injecting another woman with heroin and leaving her to die at a gas station in October 2013.

Kristine Woellner, 21, faces two felony charges in the case. Tara Bryant, the woman who overdosed, took the stand in Lincoln County Tuesday.

Prosecutors think website influences girls to stab friend; One Northwoods high school tries to keep students off inappropriate websites

RHINELANDER - Waukesha police believe two 12-year-old-girls lured a friend into a wooded area and stabbed her 19 times.

Police think the suspects planned to kill the victim for months before attacking her on Saturday.
