Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team inspires Northwoods crowds

LAKE TOMAHAWK - Two things unite a special group of 24 of our nation's heroes - traumatic injury and softball. The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team is made up of veterans and active duty servicemen who served in the Global War on Terrorism.

"I thought the world was over. And I thought there was no way in the world I'd ever do anything again," Army veteran and Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball player Rick Wilk said of losing his leg.

Boat show displays restored wooden boats, raises money for medical research

MINOCQUA - It can take years to restore an old wooden boat. But some wooden boat owners are willing to put that time in because the finished product can teach people about antique boats.

People got the chance to show off their boats at 22nd annual Antique Wooden Boat Show in Minocqua this weekend.

Blues festival raises money for youth sports teams

ST. GERMAIN - Most communities sell cookies and pies to raise money for their kid's athletic programs. But athletes in the Northland Pines district get most of their funding from a blues festival.

The Joe Bucher Blues Fest is the biggest blues festival in northern Wisconsin. More than 350 people come to the festival every year. All of the money raised is donated to the Northland Pines sports teams.

$1.8 million bike trail merges two Northwoods towns

BOULDER JUNCTION/MANITOWISH WATERS - Manitowish Waters and Boulder Junction will see hundreds of bikers pass through their towns. They've been working on the bike trail since 2009. Saturday, they celebrated the merge.

The Manitowish Waters Area Bike Trail is an 8 mile trail. One of the people who helped put the trail together says it will boost the local economy.

Woman who dies in Arbor Vitae car crash remembered for dedication to community organizations

MINOCQUA - Barbara Hilleque, 67, died when her car was rear ended on Highway 51 and pushed into the path of a small bus going the other way.

She left a lasting impression on many people in the Northwoods.

She spent her free time volunteering for multiple organizations.

Burke releases rural jobs plan, focuses on schools, health & growth

ACROSS WISCONSIN - A new job plan from Democratic candidate for Governor Mary Burke focuses on her economic objectives with rural Wisconsin.

Many parts of Wisconsin's rural areas, like the Northwoods, lags behind the rest of the state economically; for example, five of the ten Wisconsin counties with the worst unemployment rate in the state are in the rural portions of the Northwoods, according to June unemployment numbers from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

Trapping convention in Upper Peninsula a congregation of nostalgic veterans, enthusiastic active trappers

ESCANABA - There's a certain nostalgia, to be sure, about trapping.

"A lot of us even kind of try to look like the old mountain men. Maybe you've noticed," says the grizzled and bearded Dave Linkhart, a trapper and officer of the National Trappers Association.

Wisconsin named #1 in cranberry production; Northwoods farm contributes to keeping title

WISCONSIN/THREE LAKES - Wisconsin continues to be the best state nationwide when it comes to producing cranberries. One Northwoods farm is preparing to make this year even better.

James Lake Farms in Three Lakes harvested close to 8,000 barrels last year. They hope to meet those expectations this year.

More than 50 boats featured in weekend boat show

MINOCQUA - Many people enjoy boating during the summer months.

This weekend you can check out the beauty and workmanship of antique boats in Minocqua. More than 50 boats will be on hand for the 22nd Antique and Classic Wooden Boat Show. The event is free to the public and features classics from the early 1920's to the 1960's. It will kick off tonight with a boat parade before the Min-Aqua Bat waterski show... and continues all weekend on the docks of The Boathouse Restaurant.

Police: Man kills himself after shooting at police during car chase

MARINETTE COUNTY - The Marinette County Sheriff's Office believes a 35-year-old man killed himself after shooting at deputies during a police chase Thursday in Marinette County.

A person called the sheriff's office just before 3 p.m. saying they were in their car, getting shot at by a person in a black Chevy Tahoe.

Wausau business man will spend 11 years in prison for fraud in 5 counties

NORTHWOODS - A former Wausau business man will spend 11 years in prison for defrauding more than a million dollars from homeowners and investors.

54-year-old Jay Fischer was found guilty of felonies of racketeering, theft, and fraud. He committed mortgage fraud through his Marathon County business Valley Title.
