Police advise of sex offender's release space

The Antigo Police Department has been canvassing the area with notifications in the vicinity of where a convicted sex offender will reside following his release from prison next week.

Jerry W. Meade, 55, is scheduled to be released on Tuesday and will live at a Neva Road residence which provides specialized supervision by the Department of Corrections.

Snowy, cold winter hangs on, should be much better

Blinding snow early today was a reminder that the horrid winter of 2013-2014 just won’t let go. With Easter egg hunts scheduled in Antigo, Elcho, Aniwa and elsewhere throughout the area, some commercial snowplows were already tucked away on the logical bet their role was over. At Tuesday meeting, new board members welcomed

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors Tuesday welcomed six new members to the 21-person panel. Newly elected supervisors at their first session included Richard Burby, Joe Novak, Pete Pennington, Angie Schreiber, Richard Schuh and Don Scupien. A brief highlight on the Langlade County Economic Development Corporation featured the organization’s strides in marketing and tourism in the surrounding area. Full story: Antigo Daily Journal

Bill Greening seeking his third term as sheriff

Sheriff Bill Greening has announced his intention to seek his third four-year term as Langlade County’s top law enforcement officer. He is seeking a bid which will be decided at the polls during the Nov. 4 election this fall. Jail for man cited in sex, drug crimes

An Antigo man accused of having sex with a teen-age girl before being arrested twice more on counts of bail jumping based on drug-related allegations will stay out of prison so long as he abides by rules of supervision. Jacob McGhee, 22, of 1016 Fifth Ave. was sentenced in Langlade County Circuit Court Friday to serve one year in the local lock-up with a two year prison term being imposed, but stayed. Winter gets a little longer with snow, sad forecast

Just when the grassy areas started to surface in Antigo and Langlade County, Mother Nature played another cruel trick. After a terrible winter season, an overnight snow storm dropped several inches of wet and slippery snow, whipped it with substantial winds and led to a two-hour delay in the opening of classes at schools in Antigo, White Lake and Elcho. Physical environment ranks high here, but residents fail to use healthy benefits

Langlade County ranks high for physical environment, but rather dismal for health behaviors and social and economic factors, according to the annual County Health Rankings released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Prison for three years: Ex-officer sentenced today

Marathon County Judge Michael Moran noted a man’s remorse as sincere, stating he was “moved by the fact that he has taken responsibility for his actions,” but stressed punishment was needed in sentencing a former Langlade County sheriff’s deputy today to three years in prison for misdeeds involving juvenile girls.

Michael Brayton, 26, of Gleason was remanded to custody after the two-hour-plus hearing which attracted a crowd to the Langlade County courtroom.

Jury rules man guilty of alcohol count

Langlade County District Attorney Ralph Uttke said today that he is considering pressing an additional charge, specifically perjury, against an Elton man who testified on his own behalf at trial Wednesday on counts linked to an incident last summer. Judge Fred Kawalski set a sentencing hearing on May 12 for 38-year-old Nathan E. Manning on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated while accompanied by a minor child as well as an amended count of child neglect. Full story: Antigo Daily Journal

Council OKs city improvements

The Antigo Common Council session on Wednesday night was brief, but coincided with a hour-long presentation by the Langlade County Economic Development Corporation by executive director Chris Berry on its continuing marketing and tourism projects around the city and surrounding area. Five arrested in traffic stop, were smoking marijuana

Five Forest County residents were nabbed on drug charges here during a stop along Highway 55 early today. The group, listing addresses from Wabeno, Crandon and Mole Lake, had evidently been smoking marijuana and were questioned after the driver, an 18-year-old female, crossed the center line. Her companions, all male, ranged in age from 20 to 24. Full story: Antigo Daily Journal

Boys, Girls fund-raiser Saturday

The Edison Club Event Center was being transformed for a springtime gala this morning. Volunteers from The Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County were at the hall decorating for Corks, Forks & Brews, a fund-raising celebration slated Saturday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. The event promises something for everyone, including food, wine and micro brew tasting, and silent auction. Water line freezes, studenets get a day off

Students at West Elementary School, the largest of the district’s facilities for younger students, got an unexpected Tuesday off from classes. For the second time in less than a week, a water freeze-up shut the facility down in the 1200 block of Seventh Avenue as municipal crews chopped away at the asphalt to get to the connections and pipes that had frozen following one of the coldest winters on record in this part of Wisconsin. Northcentral Technical College, with Antigo campus, named among top 150 in nation

The Aspen Institute recently named Northcentral Technical College, which operates a campus in Antigo, among the nation’s top 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the 2015 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and $1 million in prize funds. The Aspen Institute identified the top 150 community colleges through an assessment of institutional performance, improvement and equity on student retention and completion measures. Judge oversees assortment of criminal cases, fines set

A Laona man has been ordered to pay $563 for a drug crime dating to January. Peter C.E. Widucki, 19, pleaded no contest to possessing marijuana during a hearing Tuesday in Langlade County Circuit Court. The payment consists of a $50 fine plus court costs. Widucki was arrested after a Langlade County sheriff’s deputy found marijuana inside a vehicle. A drug paraphernalia charge was dismissed. Full story: Antigo Daily Journal

Between a very harsh winter, pending storm, corn harvested

There are a few things you don’t expect to see on a sunny April 2 afternoon, especially after one of the coldest and most snowy winters on record. But there it was: Tom Schmidt rolling across a field northeast of Antigo combining corn from the 2013 growing season making his very likely first harvest of the 2014 season. What's next? White Lake referendum loses by two

Officials in the White Lake school district are asking “what’s next?” after a $250,000 referendum was defeated by two votes Tuesday. Final tally, subject to the official canvass on Thursday morning, was 179 opposed to 177 in favor. A recount is probable, and absentee ballots caught in transit, but postmarked Tuesday, could still change the outcome if they are received by Friday, but officials are already beginning to look ahead.
