Deadlock ends with Tuesday's school vote

The deadlock on the Antigo school board is over. That was the message sent by district voters Tuesday night, who swept a new slate of school board candidates into office in unprecedented numbers. Voters tossed out incumbent Clark Palmer and failed to be swayed by former board member Roy Dieck, Gail Zaverousky and Karin Koeppel, who ran as a team. Full story: Antigo Daily Journal

'Sleeping' motorist jailed on alcohol count

A man found sleeping in his vehicle during the early morning hours and a couple questioned as the result of a traffic stop are now facing criminal charges. According to the Antigo Police Department, the sleeping motorist was spotted in the lot of a north side business just before 2 a.m. He reportedly told the officer he had earlier been at an area tavern and he was taken into custody on suspicion of drunken driving. Maple producers hoping unusually long, cold and snowy winter is over

The unusually late spring seems like it is finally breaking a bit after one of the most harsh-winters on record in the northwoods, and traditional maple producers were out Sunday tapping trees to do their best to get the season underway. Big producers, with vacuum lines connected to trees have been drawing sap, but squirrels have been attacking the miles of lines causing hundreds of leaks. Full story: Antigo Daily Journal

Two charged in marijuana find at Langlade tavern

A Langlade tavern operator and bartender have both been formally charged in connection with an undercover drug investigation involving alleged acts of marijuana sales. Bail originally set at $20,000 was reduced to $5,000 in Langlade County Circuit Court Wednesday for both Jeremy Walters, 32, of N4495 Highway 55 at White Lake and Amanda M. Two jailed on drug sale allegations

Two people have been arrested and are currently being held on cash bail of $20,000 each on allegations of drug-related activity as the result of an investigation which centered on an eastern Langlade County business. Formal charges are expected to be filed later today against the pair, a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, who were taken into custody late Monday after sheriff’s officials executed a search warrant at the location. Getting elementary schools up to date possible, pricey, board is told

Antigo school district elementary schools could be brought up to 21st century academic standards, but it would require additions, extensive renovations and millions and millions of dollars. That was the message Charlie Schneider of CESA No. 10 brought to the board of education Tuesday, sharing the results of a $35,000 study commissioned by the panel that examined maintenance needs at the district’s nine schools. Two charged locally in bath salt buy

Formal charges have been filed in Langlade County Circuit Court against an area pair arrested last week after they allegedly attempted to retrieve a parcel of bath salts, a synthetic drug, sent to them through the U.S. mail.

Travis A. Howard, 28, of N989 Elmhurst Road and Laura J. Kelly, 28, of N1147 Summer Street in Aniwa, have both posted bail to earn their freedom in the case — Howard, a $2,500 cash bond and Kelly, $750 cash — and were back in court on Monday.

Marijuana seized, three arrested at Antigo home

Three Antigo residents are facing criminal charges after law officers seized more than four pounds of marijuana during execution of a search warrant at a city home Friday. The drugs had an estimated street value between $14,000 and $20,000. The men were taken into custody and are awaiting a court appearance later today where they are expected to face a slew of allegations including possession of the drug as well as having the intent to sell it. Severity index climbing, turkey, deer tips offered

Winter severity indexes are soaring into the triple digits, prompting an influx of interest in feeding the turkeys and whitetails that share the northwoods landscape. According to Shelby Hiestand, Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist for Langlade and Lincoln Counties, it’s important that the public has the best information of helping wildlife, so they don’t inadvertently make a bad situation worse. School board candidate forum set for Monday

Candidates for four available seats on the Antigo school board—an election that is shaping to be one of the most contentious in years—will gather Monday for a public forum on the issues. The event is sponsored by Results Broadcasting and the Antigo Daily Journal with assistance from the high school’s media tech class and forensics team. Middle School closed by water main break today, city crews are very busy

Students attending Antigo Middle School got an unexpected vacation today. A water main that serves the school just south of the city’s downtown area ruptured making a mess out of the 800 block of Seventh Avenue and cutting water to the school’s fire protection systems, rest rooms, food services and more. Man gets jail for incidents of drug activity at Antigo home in 2012

A former Antigo man who police believe was fully aware of illegal activity occurring within his home in 2012 was sentenced here Tuesday to serve 30 days in jail on a felony count of maintaining a place for the purpose of trafficking drugs. Justin W. Pergler, 30, of Elcho entered a plea of no contest to the charge in Langlade County Circuit Court. Full story: Antigo Daily Journal
