Worship, hymns rise from relic of the past

For the first time in decades, Psalms and hymns rang out from the Estonian Evangelical Martin Luther Church on Sunday.

Volunteers from the Chicago Estonian community, including Honorary Vice-Consul Siim Soot, spent the weekend shoring up the crumbling structure, located off Highway J just outside Bloomville, and capped their successful project by holding a service under the trees.

Cancer survivor thanks Relay for Life

Honorary survivor Arlette Puls credited those involved with Relay for Life and similar events for her ability to speak and be a part of the event at opening ceremonies for the annual fund-raiser Friday night.

In remarks that brought a few tears and some smiles, Puls thanked the “wonderful family” of survivors and caregivers involved in the event, which opened under sunny skies with a goal of raising $58,000 over the next 12 hours.

Work got underway early to get ready for Relay for Life at Listle Field

The hourly forecast calls for potentially cloudy skies, but little or no rain this afternoon and evening as participants in the Langlade County Relay for Life flock to Antigo High School’s Listle Field for the overnight fund-raiser.

Work for the overnight event, which concludes with a 7 a.m. closing ceremony Saturday, was already underway just after 8 a.m. this morning, with volunteers erecting huge tents for concessions and prizes, lights being strung, and members of Boy Scouts Troop 644 setting up their pup tents.

Pride stressed at graduation for 172 students at Antigo's Middle School

Bulldog pride was on full display Wednesday when the Antigo Middle School hosted a graduation ceremony for 172 eighth grade students.

The program mixed commencement pomp and circumstance with some more informal touches, including a video slide show and a picnic lunch for parents and friends on the school grounds.

Out-of-control vehicle crashes here Saturday

A quite unusual accident brought excitement to Antigo’s mid-section early Saturday afternoon when an out-of-control vehicle roared through a lot, accelerated over a retaining wall and plowed into a van before coming to rest in a residential lawn.

The Antigo Police Department is still investigating the incident which involved a vehicle operated by Peter S. Dziondziakowski, 60, of Bryant.

AHS graduates urged to follow their dreams, give back during commencement

Alumnus of the Year Jeremy Doucette told Antigo High School seniors to dream big dreams and share their talents with their community in a heartfelt commencement address Sunday.

Doucette, a renowned scenic designer based in New York City, received his award from interim District Administrator Dr. Don Childs, highlighting a sometimes raucous and steamy ceremony celebrating the class of 2014.

'Easy part is over,' Elcho grads told during Saturday ceremony

Valedictorian B.J. McKinney warned that “the easy part is over” after he and 30 classmates received their diplomas at Elcho High School commencement ceremonies Saturday afternoon.

“It’s hard to believe we won’t be standing here next year,” McKinney said, noting that the ceremony marked the separation between two chapters of life.

Bits and Pieces for May 31

Just before Memorial Day, I had the opportunity to take a ride to Symco to decorate graves for the summer.

I’ve been on this outing before, and if it wasn’t for the terrible condition of Highway 110 west of Marion, it would be even more pleasant.

You travel through Amish country, have an opportunity to view their farms, the buggies, horses and a way of life. It is impressive.

Free school lunches growing

Over half of the students in the Antigo school district qualify for subsidized meals, mirroring a statewide trend that finds more and more youngsters qualifying for the assistance.

At Elcho, three out of every five students can get subsidized meals. The White Lake school district offers free meals to all its students, and statistically seven in 10 youngsters are eligible for the program.

Commencement at AHS is Sunday

Antigo High School will holds its spring commencement exercises—which is traditionally filled with pomp and circumstance, music and a bit of fun—Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Sheldon Fieldhouse.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to 1993 graduate Jeremy Doucette, who honed his theatrical and design skills in high school and went on to earn a master of fine arts in design at Rutgers University.

AHS varsity basketball team is named state's best scholastic squad

The Antigo High School basketball team didn’t come home with the state championship trophy, but in the yardstick that judges prep students, they are the true state champions.

The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association recently released the Teen Academic All-State listing for the four divisions of teams and the Red Robins are the champions.

Commencement Saturday for Elcho's graduates

Elcho High School will hold commencement ceremonies for 32 seniors on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

Valedictorian is Bruce “BJ” McKinney of Deerbrook.

On top of his hard work in academics, McKinney has played basketball and baseball, serving as captain of both, participated in Students Against Destructive Behavior and played percussion in the band.

Planting of potatoes in high gear here

Despite a later spring that followed a horrific winter, the farm community is moving ahead optimistically.

“We have about four days left,” Peter Schroeder said as a four-man crew loaded his planter with seed potatoes in a field east of Antigo Tuesday afternoon. The planting teams are running a little behind the traditional May farm calendar, but Schroeder is confident.

Class of 2014 graduates Saturday at White Lake, first in new complex

Members of the White Lake graduating class of 2014 will long remember the day tassels were turned and diplomas were granted, signaling an end to their high school careers. That is, if valedictorian Julia Boyd has anything to say about it.

“I know some of you are too busy posting silly cap and gown photos on Instagram to pay attention to this speech, but I suggest you do because I have some wise words for you,” she advised. “Don’t close up your smart phone, though. I want you to post this speech on Vine. And hashtag my name on Twitter. Do it. Now.”

Construction very near, town of Neva residents continue offering road input

With about two weeks before the heavy machinery rolls in to start a reconstruction project on Highway B from the Highway 45 intersection east a little more than a mile to Chilie Road, Neva Corners residents are still busy.

They are still working to get things what they call “right.”

Area's top drug house identified, continue to make arrests in the area

District Attorney Ralph Uttke Tuesday identified a South Hudson Street home as the “number one drug house in the county” as a slate of individuals, including the alleged “kingpin” of the operation, rolled before Judge Fred Kawalski on a slate of criminal charges.

Their arrests were what officials advise are “just the first of many” linked to an investigation which has been more than a month in the making by law enforcement from the Langlade County Sheriff’s Department and the Antigo Police Department.
