$27.26 million budget gets preliminary approval from school board Tuesday

A 2014-15 budget topping $27.26 million won preliminary approval from the Antigo school board Tuesday, the final step prior to a public hearing and adoption in August.

The action came at the board’s regular July session, which also included a look at maintenance projects and several lengthy reports on academic monitoring.

According to Business Manager Mary Jo Filbrandt, the budget calls for general fund expenditures of $27.261 million, an increase of $441,261, funded by a levy of $9.429 million.

Man accused of biting woman during fight, suspect now in jail

Bail was set at $2,000 cash in Langlade County Circuit Court Monday for an Antigo man arrested on allegations linked to a drunken weekend scuffle.

Jason R. Powell, 36, of 1025 1/2 Fifth Ave. stands charged with five criminal counts in connection with the violent dispute — strangulation or suffocation, battery, domestic disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia and a felony charge of bail jumping.

'Elvis,' his family are major draw for park music program

There was a huge crowd on hand for the Music in the Park program Monday evening in Antigo.

They watched and listened as Matt Hayek, looking like a very healthy and slim Elvis Presley, performed the music of the King of Rock and Roll. He was joined on the City Park bandstand by his children to share a variety of tunes, all of them well done.

School board to eye maintenance at meeting on Tuesday evening

The Antigo school board will look ahead toward 2014-15 maintenance projects plus review its new committee structure when it meets Tuesday.

The regular July meeting, which will also include preliminary action on the 2014-15 budget, will get underway at 7 p.m. in the media tech room located on the second floor of the high school.

Late blight marching toward Langlade County

Late blight, a destructive fungal-like disease caused by Phytophthora infestans, has been found in Portage County and is heading north.

According to Stephanie Plaster, University of Wisconsin-Extension agriculture agent, Langlade County is now considered to be at high risk for a late blight outbreak due to the presence of the pathogen in close proximity.

Athletes splash and dash their way through Veterans Memorial Park

Splash-N-Dash is growing by leaps and bounds.

Langlade County’s unique aquathon drew 91 racers to Veterans Memorial Park at Jack Lake one week ago for the second annual event.

“Even though thunderstorms were predicted, Mother Nature provided an ideal day with perfect water temperatures and a not-too-hot and humid trail run,” organizer Michelle Koss said.

Antigo Truck Repair marking its 40th anniversary on Saturday

Antigo Truck Repair will celebrate four decades—a significant milestone for a family-owned business—Saturday.

The open house will run from noon to 6 p.m. and will include food, refreshments, and a chance to take a look at some of the big equipment that has made the business so successful. The Northwoods Tractor Club will also have a display of vintage machinery.

Second person charged with firing shots in downtown

A friend of an Antigo man already convicted of firing shots from his downtown apartment at vehicles and buildings near the CoVantage Credit Union last winter will now also face criminal charges.

Michael Gibney, 24, of W10696 W. Fifth Ave. made an appearance in Langlade County Circuit Court Wednesday where he stood accused of six counts, including a felony charge of endangering safety by reckless use of a firearm.

Garden Club holding its annual tour Saturday

Gardens ranging from whimsical and ornamental to quaint and secluded will be featured when the Antigo Garden Club hosts its 2014 Garden Tour and Art in the Field Saturday.

The six gardens, all in or within easy driving distance of Antigo, will be open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available from any club member, or at Lakeside Market, The Blue Awning, or Natural Living and include a chance at over 40 door prizes.

Aldermen stall ambulance decision

The city of Antigo’s Finance, Personnel & Legislative Committee declined Wednesday to reconsider purchase of a new ambulance, leaving the matter in the hands of the full Common Council for its meeting next month.

The five-member committee rebuffed a proposal by Mayor Bill Brandt to offer a substitute resolution, in the event his veto of the ambulance purchase is withheld by the council on Aug. 13, to buy the locally-sold PL Custom unit.

County Board affirms June vote on social worker, delay rec decision

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors affirmed its June decision to enhance a position in the Department of Social Services at a meeting held Tuesday evening.

At its June meeting, supervisors voted to refill a vacant position with the children and family services unit of the Social Services department with an individual holding a master’s degree.

City panel will review ambulance purchase

The city of Antigo’s Finance, Personnel & Legislative Committee will reconsider purchase of a new ambulance when it convenes Wednesday.

The committee will convene at 6 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at City Hall.

Last week, the Common Council vote 7-1 to purchase a Horton ambulance from Sterling, Ill.-based Foster Coach Sales after rebuffing attempts to buy a similar, but not identical, PL Custom unit from Pomasl Fire Equipment Inc. of Antigo.

Hospital chaplain Rev. Kelley marks 92nd birthday with a surprise party

Rev. Omer Kelley, who has served as Langlade Hospital chaplain for nearly four decades, celebrated his 92nd birthday with a surprise party Monday.

Staff and the sisters of the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph presented the diminutive Irish priest with a cake following the morning Mass.

Board may link recreation and forestry jobs

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday evening and consider replacing the recreation specialist with an employee who would combine forestry and recreation duties.

Filling the vacant position, created by a resignation earlier this spring, highlights the session being held in the lower level of the Safety Building starting at 6 p.m.

Langlade Hospital not on infections list

A recent list published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services doesn’t include Langlade Hospital, and that’s a good thing.

Sixty-five hospitals from all areas of Wisconsin, including Rhinelander and Wausau, could face federal penalties for high rates of infections, complications and patient injuries, based on preliminary data released by the federal government and analyzed by Kaiser Health News.

Prostitution case ends with jail for local woman

An Antigo woman has been sentenced to serve 60 days in jail on allegations she and her boyfriend operated a place of prostitution out of their former Aniwa area home in 2012.

Teresa M. Condit, 25, now of 1129 1/2 Ninth Ave, received the term, in addition to one year of probation, after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of prostitution during a hearing this week in Shawano County Circuit Court. An additional 180-day jail term was imposed but stayed.

Mayor vetoes action on ambulance

Mayor Bill Brandt this morning vetoed the Antigo Common Council’s decision to buy a new ambulance from an out-of-town firm, suggesting the purchase needed more study.

At Wednesday’s council meeting, aldermen rejected attempts from Brandt and Alderman Phil Beck to award the contract for a new ambulance to Pomasl Fire Equipment Inc. of Antigo, electing to buy a unit from Foster Coach Sales, Sterling, Ill., instead. Foster was the lowest bidder by $66.

City to launch major water project on Second Avenue

The Second Avenue water main, which suffered four breaks over the brutal 2013-14 winter, will get some much needed attention, perhaps as soon as September, following action by the Antigo Common Council Wednesday, aldermen approved a contract with MSA Professionals Inc. for $29,700 for the design and bidding phase to replace the water main located along Second Avenue from Aurora Street to Langlade Road, along with valves in the distribution system on First Avenue to the water tower.
