Popular Elcho congregation offers warm welcome to new pastor, Rev. Dana Schindler

Elcho United Church of Christ, known as the village’s “community church,” has welcomed a new pastor.

Rev. Dana Schindler began duties at the congregation, know for its local philanthropic efforts, earlier this summer, coming to the ministry after a career in education and speech therapy.

1937 Ford convertible named the 'best' at Badgerland's show Sunday

Badgerland Classics and Customs drew a nice selection of cars and motorcycles and spectators to its 2014 show held again Sunday at the Peaceful Valley Park complex.

Weather conditions were ideal to stroll among the vehicles and visit with the owners. Some of the machines were stunning and there was a nice selection of classics on hand.

Intersection changes baffle some motorists

The state Department of Transportation’s revamp of intersections along Highway 52 northeast of Antigo is causing confusion—and concern—among motorists.

The Langlade County Sheriff’s Department received several calls Friday from motorists unclear about the changes in signage at the Highway 52 intersections at County Highways V, BB, I, S and B.

County Board will look again at rec position

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors goes on the road Tuesday for a meeting at the Wolf River town hall starting at 9 a.m.

The hall is located just south of the Langlade intersection at Highways 55 and 64.

One of the items from the July meeting is coming back to the floor, a proposal to fill a vacant position in the Forestry and Recreation Department with a shared outdoor specialist and forester.

Humane Society to raise funds at flower garden

A late summer evening, wandering through a garden sipping a glass of sangria or beer.

Add a chance to win a few prizes and what could be better?

Members of the Langlade County Humane Society hope the answer is nothing, and that people turn out for the first Petals for Paws fund-raiser scheduled Saturday evening at the River Ridge Flower Farm, located across from Riverview Golf Course at W11915 Highland Rd.

Judge sets bail in array of cases, guns, drugs on the list

Langlade County Judge Fred Kawalski set bail at $1,000 cash Monday for a Bryant man accused of being in illegal possession of firearms.

William C. Drewek, 32, stands charged with six such counts for the six guns removed from his residence last week. Due to a prior felony conviction for burglary dating to 2004, he is legally not allowed to possess the weaponry.

Mayor's ambulance veto upheld

The Antigo Common Council Wednesday upheld Mayor Bill Brandt’s veto of a new ambulance purchase, sending the issue back to committee for rebidding.

At its regular August session, aldermen voted 5-4 in favor of sustaining the veto, with Jim Darling, Tim Kassis, Tom Bauknecht and Reinhardt Balcerzak opposed.

On the advice of the mayor, aldermen also decided to review the city’s entire bidding process, perhaps giving some sort of preference to local businesses.

Classic cars, hot machines and plenty of rubber duckies Sunday in Antigo

Classic cars, a veterans tribute and racing rubber duckies will take over Peaceful Valley on Sunday.

Highlighting the day will be the 29th annual car show and swap meet hosted by Badgerland Classics & Customs, with free spectator admission.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., continuing until noon, with activities running until 4 p.m.

Antigo's Sears store updated, sets a grand opening Friday, Saturday

The store, which has been part of North Town Centre, for a number of years, was sold to a Hayward couple, Angie and Kerry Walters, and they have pumped new life into the business. The interior has been redecorated, a new reception desk has been place just inside the front door and the inventory has been enhanced.

Public works projects heat up

As mid-August arrives, the city of Antigo is awash in public works projects.

Department of Public Works crews are patching potholes, personnel from the state Department of Transportation have placed the new left turn signals at the Highway 64/45 intersection into operation, greatly easing congestion at that northside corner, and the big equipment from the Langlade County Highway Department is clawing into the North Elementary School playground preparing for repaving.

Stegall wins county sheriff's GOP primary

The stage has been set for a November showdown in a race for Langlade County Sheriff.

In Tuesday’s primary which featured two Republican candidates for the position, Joe Stegall of Bryant defeated Sam Wurtinger of Antigo on a tally of 728 to 486.

Stegall, a corrections officer within the Langlade County Jail, will now meet up with Democratic incumbent Sheriff Bill Greening in the Nov. 4 election.

Area couple cited in drug sale accused of endangering children

Felony allegations of reckless endangerment of safety have been filed against a local pair on charges they were accompanied by two young children during their involvement in a recent illicit drug sale.

The defendants, 22-year-old Molly M. Rustick and Robert J. Beattie, 31, both of N315 Highway HH, along with 33-year-old Nicholas J. Winters of 518 Ackley St., all made appearances in Langlade County Circuit Court Monday.

Sen. Johnson visits, eyes the financial future

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson told a receptive crowd that the state of the nation is precarious, with the U.S. facing an uncertain financial future unless some severe corrections can be made.

The GOP senator visited Northcentral Technical College on Wednesday, part of a continuing tour of Wisconsin communities he is undertaking to stress his message of fiscal conservatism in the wake of climbing federal spending, deficits and debt.

Antigo cheesemaker honored

Mike Matucheski, a cheesemaker at Sartori Company in Antigo, was named the 2014 Grand Master Cheese Maker during the Blue Ribbon Cheese & Butter Auction, held Friday at Wisconsin State Fair Park.

Matucheski, a four-time winner of the coveted Grand Master Cheese Maker title, earned the honor for his Chai BellaVitano, the first place entry in the Flavored Hard Cheese Class. He previously earned the title in 2012, 2010 and 2009.

GOP primary Tuesday for sheriff's nomination

There are yard signs, newspaper ads and door-to-door visits leading to a spirited election Tuesday for the Republican nomination going into the fall election for Langlade County sheriff.

Sam Wurtinger of Antigo and Joseph Stegall of Bryant will both working toward the Nov. 4 election versus incumbent Bill Greening.

Running as the lone Democrat, Greening is seeking his third, four-year term as the county’s top law enforcement officer.

Pelican Lake fire district holds open house for new headquarters

The Pelican Lake Fire District unveiled its new headquarters on Saturday, hosting an afternoon celebration and pig roast for members of the community.

The hall, located just off Highway 45 in the village of Pelican Lake, replaced an inadequate and antiquated facility a block to the north.

Constructed for just under $700,000, the project took the better part of four years to plan and complete.

City walking trail project gets a boost

Antigo’s growing network of trails and recreational opportunities received another boost this week, with the Rotary Club donating time and money toward construction of a new bridge on the Spring Brook Trail.

According to Sarah Repp, the city’s director of parks, cemeteries and recreation, the bridge was made possible by club fund-raising efforts and a matching grant from District 6220. The city received a total of $5,000 toward the project, divided equally between the local club and the district organization.

Kayla Berg missing five years, case never far from investigator's thoughts

It’s a case Det. Sgt. Dan Duley of the Antigo Police Department says never leaves his mind.

On Monday, family and friends of Kayla Mae Berg will mark the five-year anniversary of when on Aug. 11, 2009, the then 15-year-old Antigo girl disappeared.

The search for her whereabouts still continues today.

German festival set for music program Monday, with ethnic foods

It’s the climax of summer, but City Park will be transformed into an Oktoberfest setting for Music in the Park Monday.

Second Edition will be playing polkas and waltzes in a concert sponsored by the Antigo Lions Club, and the entire evening has been turned into a German festival to benefit the Antigo Area Community Food Pantry.

Highway 52 crash claims a life today

One person is dead and nine others are injured as the result of a crash this morning on Highway 52 southwest of Antigo in Marathon County.

Authorities tell news sources that all of the victims are under the age of 18.

The crash involved a larger sports utility-type vehicle which rolled over at the intersection of Highway 52 and County Road Y near Hogarty at around 10 a.m.
