Blue Ribbon school: Spring Valley wins national honors

Spring Valley Elementary is among eight public educational facilities in Wisconsin being honored as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The awards, announced Tuesday afternoon, were received by just 337 schools across the nation. Recipients were chosen based on overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps.

Tollef Wienke, school principal, said students heard the news this morning through a video and an announcement. A larger celebration is planned after the official awards ceremony held in Washington D.C. on Nov. 10 and 11.

AHS students to 'dominate cancer'

Antigo High School students and the Gridiron Club are hoping to “dominate cancer.”

This is Dominate Cancer Week at the school, with students selling specially-designed T-shirts with proceeds to benefit the Volm Cancer Center at Langlade Hospital.

The shirts were created by students in Tim Krueger’s graphic design classes based on a winning design submitted by Lizzy Limon.

Some areas have salt problems

The reward for surviving last winter’s frigid temperatures and record snowfall, several states are learning, is drastic price increases for road salt — and that’s if they can even get it.

Replenishing stockpiles is proving challenging, especially for some Midwestern states, after salt supplies were depleted to tame icy roads last winter. And price increases of at least 20 percent have been common in places including Boston and Raleigh, North Carolina.

40th anniversary of Ice Age Trail to be celebrated here on Saturday

This is a very big weekend for Ice Age Trail enthusiasts in Langlade County.

On Saturday morning, the final 2014 hike on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Langlade County will take place over the Kettlebowl segment northeast of Polar.

And that evening, supporters will gather again for the 40th anniversary celebration dinner at Swartzendruber’s Supper Club.

Shelby Ruhland and Dan Pless are royalty for Elcho's homecoming festivities

Elcho High School celebrated its homecoming Saturday, with Shelby Ruhland and Dan Pless reigning over a day of parades, football and an evening dance.

Joining them on the court were Kyleigh Decorah and Trinton Menomin, senior representatives; Ryan McFadden and Tori Franer, junior reps; Jacob Parise and Molli Morrison, sophomores; and Collin Smith and Emily Schafer, freshmen.

Langlade Hospital nursing staff cited

Langlade Hospital has been named as a recipient of a Five Star Award in Inpatient Services for Discharge Instructions and a Four Star Award recipient for Inpatient Services for Overall Quality of Care.

The awards were presented at a recent conference in St. Louis, Mo. Health care leaders from across the country gathered to participate in the Excellence in Health Care Conference hosted by Professional Research Consultants, Inc.

Elcho crowns Ruhland as homecoming queen

Shelby Ruhland and Dan Pless are reigning over Elcho High School’s homecoming celebration today.

Pless and Ruhland were crowned king and queen of today’s festivities at a pep rally Friday night at the school.

Joining them on the court are Kyleigh Decorah and Trinton Menomin, senior representatives; juniors Ryan McFadden and Tori Franer; sophomores Jacob Parise and Molli Morrison; and freshmen Collin Smith and Emily Schafer.

Send a friend a card while helping out animals at Humane Society

Everyone loves a card, whether it be for a birthday, anniversary, celebration or simple cheering up.

Now, that heartfelt gesture can benefit the Langlade County Humane Society as well.

Wilhelm faces health challenges, benefit underway

If there's anything I've learned about this community, it's that in times of need, people band together and help their own.

Scott Wilhelm, 30, is an area native and veteran. He has done two tours of Iraq, and saw things in a war-torn desert no human should ever have to face. He witnessed the worst humanity had to offer with grace and dignity. Soon after arriving home the second time, Scott and his siblings lost their mother, nine years after losing their father.

Food pantry is moving to former hospital laundry on city's north side

The Antigo Area Community Food Pantry received some very good news on Wednesday.

Pantry directors accepted the donation of thousands of pounds of canned goods through the Thrivent Cans Hunger competition, and also announced that it is relocating to new, far more spacious accommodations being offered by Langlade Hospital.

City has found a new inspector for buildings, zoning administrator

After months of operating short-staffed, the city of Antigo is close to having a new building inspector and zoning administrator.

At a special meeting Wednesday, the Antigo Common Council hired Roger Musolff to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jerry Wilhelm in March.

Musolff, who most recently served as a building inspector for the city of Wausau, will be paid $13,168 in salary and benefits for the remainder of this year, assuming an Oct. 20 start date.

Week of activities mark Elcho homecoming, football Saturday

Elcho High School is celebrating homecoming, with a week of activities leading up to Friday night’s pep rally and Saturday’s parade, gridiron match-up, and dance.

Vying for honors as queen are seniors Kyleigh Decorah and Shelby Ruhland, while king candidates are Dan Pless and Trinton Menomin.

Joining them on the court will be freshmen Collin Smith and Emily Schafer, sophomores Jacob Parise and Molli Morrison, and juniors Ryan McFadden and Tori Franer.

School board eyes increase in rate for using hockey rink at fairgrounds

It will cost a bit more for the Antigo Red Robins to use the indoor ice at the fairgrounds, under the terms of an agreement approved by the board of education on Tuesday.

The board, meeting for its regular monthly session, approved a new three-year agreement with the Antigo Area Youth Hockey Association for use of the ice rink located in the multi-purpose building at the fairgrounds.

Under the new plan, the district will pay $8,500 for this school year, $9,000 in 2015-16, and $9,500 in 2016-17.

Sidewalks

Crews from Duffek Sand & Gravel are nearing completion of a complex project extending sidewalks to the city’s north side. The project has been ongoing for several years, with city crews taking the lead, but the decision was made to bid out the remainder of the work this year due to the many driveway approaches in the area.

Find body of missing Wausau woman

Wausau police say they have found the body of a woman missing for nearly four years.

Police Chief Jeff Hardel said Monday that the body of Stephanie Low was found Friday in a shallow grave in the national forest near Wabeno.

Low disappeared from her Wausau apartment on Oct. 10, 2010. In 2012, police identified Kristopher Torgerson, 34, of Wausau a person of interest in her disappearance.

City council working on money, new budget

The Antigo Common Council will begin its review of the 2015 budget, move forward with a new all-terrain vehicle trail, and perhaps select a new building inspector when it convenes for a series of meetings on Wednesday.

The busy evening will open at 6 p.m. in the chambers at City Hall, when the council will hold a special meeting featuring two agenda items.

School board to take action on maintenance at elementary units

The Antigo school board will take action on the 2014-15 maintenance plan, focused largely on work at elementary schools, when it convenes on Tuesday.

The board will meet for its regular September session at 7 p.m. in the media tech room at the high school. A reception for new teachers will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The maintenance plan, which carries a price tag of $355,484 was reviewed by the board when it met as a committee of the whole earlier this month.

Red Robins mark homecoming 'war'

It was a “War on 64” Friday, as the Antigo High School Red Robins played the Merrill Bluejays in the climax to a week-long homecoming celebration Friday night.

The Robins fell to the powerful ’Jays, but that did little to dampen the enthusiasm of a very successful homecoming week celebration.

King and Queen Isaac Cuellar and Faith Neumann were announced at the Friday afternoon pep rally, a roisterous affair featuring the Marching Red Robins drumline, reports from the fall sports teams., and the awarding of the spirit stick to the senior class.

Kretz earns forest history accolades

Kretz Lumber Company has been named the winner of The Connor Award by the Forest History Association of Wisconsin, the honor, presented for outstanding contributions to forest history, was presented at the organization’s 39th annual meeting Sept. 12 in Goodman.

The presentation was made by Sara Connor, president of the association, to Kretz President Troy Brown and forester Al Koeppel.

Neumann, Cuellar are homecoming royalty

Faith Neumann and Isaac Cuellar were chosen as queen and king of Antigo High School’s homecoming celebration this afternoon, the highlight of a spirited pep rally that included music, games and the awarding of the spirit stick for the most enthusiastic class.

Joining them on the court are Aeric Berner and Jordan Nagel, first attendants; Alex Thomae and Alexa Samolinski, second attendants; Michael Bradley and Taylor Pomasl, third attendants; and Andy Blink and Star Fermanich, fourth attendants.

Potato harvest moving ahead in county

The Wisconsin and National Department of Agriculture are keeping a close eye on the potato crop now coming out of the ground in Langlade County.

The agents said that production during 2013 totaled 26 million hundredweight, and that figure was down 3.4 million from the previous year.

In Wisconsin this year, 62,500 acres were planted in Wisconsin, and that’s down 2,000 from 2012.

A bit chilly, but car, truck deals are offered

Conditions were a bit chilly but the dealers were hot at the first-ever car sale in the park opening this morning at the Peaceful Valley Festival Grounds.

CoVantage Credit Union is sponsoring the event at the new downtown location, running today until 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.

Participating dealers include Brickner’s of Antigo, Langlade Ford, Parsons of Antigo and Quinlan’s Equipment.

Farm market winding down season—Nutritionalist Bonnie Hessedal to be offering tips

Fall is in the air and the Antigo Farmers’ Market is winding down after another successful seventh season.

This Saturday, Bonnie Hessedal, dietitian at the Langlade Hospital, will return to prepare a powerhouse of a soup, featuring acorn squash, kale and bacon, suitable for the coming winter months.

The demonstration will take place from 9 to 11 a.m.
