Students, new principal pleased to start '14-15 school year at Mattoon

Students at Mattoon's elementary school certainly appeared to be happy to be back on Tuesday.

They capped their day with the new principal, Nancy Resch, in an assembly in the gymnasium and heard about the new school district's “Antigo Pride’’ theme for the 2014-2015 year.

The students also heard about safety and the basics of being back in school before Miss Resch took questions from the youngsters.

Passenger in car dies in crash with school bus

A school bus carrying members of the Pulaski High School volleyball team collided with a car along Highway 29 Tuesday night, killing one person and injuring 14 others.

A 24-year-old Athens woman, who was a passenger of the automobile, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the car, a 27-year-old Marathon man was seriously hurt. Officials said he remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Motorist had marijuana, several others nabbed for drunk driving

A Neenah man is awaiting a local courtroom appearance today following his arrest on drug charges as the result of a late night traffic stop Monday.

Langlade County officials said the 25-year-old man was taken into custody on several counts, including possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, after deputies retrieved six separately packaged bags of the illegal substance during the 11:17 p.m. stop along Highway 55 at Highway K.

Authorities said the man admitted to smoking marijuana prior to the stop.

School staff wearing 'Antigo Pride' shirts to welcome students back

As the new school year opens, school district staff are wearing their Antigo Pride on their shoulders.

As part of the school district's Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program, staffers including bus staff are being encouraged to wear maroon T-shirts emblazoned with "Antigo Pride," the program's motto.

"We have designated every Monday as Antigo Pride apparel day," Heather McCann, associate principal at Antigo Middle School, said.

2,461 students on hand as Antigo schools open

The Antigo Unified School District counted heads on the first day of classes for the 2014-2015 term this morning, discovering there were 2,461 students on hand. That is only five less than a year ago.

“That number will be changing,” a spokesman for the district, Jan Schmidt said this morning.

She explained that students are coming and going so the number will probably not be the 2,461 counted today.

No festival this year, but 'Fudd' marks birthday with family friends

It was like old times at highways C and H Sunday for a big birthday bash.

Friends and family of Dell “Fudd” Nicholson celebrated his 60th birthday at Held’s Bar, and it was reportedly quite a party.

It is newsworthy because the popularity of these years ago spawned the birth of what thousands of people know as “Fuddfest,” a celebration of life, friends and country music in Langlade County’s town of Peck.

Antigo firefighters get chilly for a cause

Members of the Antigo Fire Department took the Ice Busket Challenge this week, adding to the coffers of the ALS Association.

In between ambulance runs, the firefighters and parademics were doused by the fire engine’s big deluge gun, assuring a thorough soaking with some icy water. And they challnged the city of Antigo Police Department, street department, City Hall employees including Mayor Bill Brandt and City Administrator Mark Desotell, and all Langlade Hospital employees to do the same.

State property values gain, but they slip across much of county

Langlade County’s equalized valuation dropped .24 percent between 2013 and 2014, but several towns, along with the village of White Lake, did manage to eke out an increase.

According to the latest numbers from the Department of Revenue, the county’s value slipped $3.9 million, from $1,649,328,300 to $1,645,405,700.

And adding to the concern, the decrease comes at a time when the current market value of all taxable property in Wisconsin rose 2.6 percent, signaling the end of a five-year slump in values.

Economic development office says farewell to its director, Chris Berry

The Langlade County Economic Development Corporation said good-bye to Executive Director Chris Berry Thursday and welcomed Angie Close into the position.

Berry announced earlier this month that she was taking a position as regional account manager for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, creating the opportunity for her assistant to move up into the top chair.

Traffic, ordinance citations carry pricey fines for many here

Thousands of dollars in fines were assessed in Langlade County Circuit Court Tuesday for traffic and ordinance-related violations.

The tickets were issued by the Antigo Police Department, the Langlade County Sheriff’s Department or the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Alcohol violations carried a hefty price for a number of individuals.

Elcho board handles staff, salary matters

The Elcho school board wrapped up a series of personnel matters this week as it prepares for the opening of the 2014-15 school term on Monday.

The board approved a 1.46 percent salary increase for its instructors and support staff, equal to the consumer price index.

Bail set at $10,000 for teen cited for beating boy with bat

A young Antigo man accused of striking a teen with a baseball bat over concerns he hadn’t been paid $100 for a marijuana delivery remains jailed in the local lockup awaiting a second appearance today in front of Langlade County Judge Fred Kawalski.

Bail was set at $10,000 cash Monday afternoon, less then 24 hours after 18-year-old Dylan T. Madderom of 235 Park St. allegedly beat his 16-year-old victim about the head and chest, requiring transport to St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield for further observation and treatment. Although serious, officials did not believe the injuries to be life-threatening.

School budget presented, then meeting gets exciting

An exhaustive 40-minute budget presentation answered most questions of the audience and led to easy approval of a 2014-15 spending plan by the Antigo school board Tuesday.

Things got a bit more dicey when it came to a revised co-curricular code however, finally passed on a 7-2 vote after extensive audience comments and board discussion, with a promise that the issue will be reviewed on a regular basis.

Action came at the board’s regular August session—the final meeting before the start of the fall term next Tuesday—which stretched to the 2 1/2 hour mark.

Local teen beats boy with baseball bat, marijuana cited as reason

An Antigo teen is hospitalized with a head wound and another is in jail following a beating which police blame on a $100 drug deal.

Chief Eric Roller advised today that the 17-year-old suspect was caught and has since confessed to striking his 16-year-old victim with a baseball bat during an encounter early Monday night in the vicinity of the Spring Brook walking trail near North Elementary School.

Contractors make progress with Langlade Ford modernization

The walls are rising on the new Langlade Ford showroom today, continuing a project that will bring the long-standing local dealership up to the latest company standards.

The project has been on the fast-track, with heavy equipment from Krueger & Steinfest rolling onto the site on July 28, minutes after a ceremonial ground-breaking, and making quick work of the old showroom and offices.

School budget is topic of discussion

Taxpayers in the Antigo Unified School District will be able to ask questions and receive accurate and detailed information about the 2014-15 school budget, a document topping $27.26 million, when the board of education convenes Tuesday.

The budget hearing will begin a bit earlier than usual, at 6:30 p.m. in the second floor lecture hall at the high school. Action by the nine-member board will follow. Since Antigo is a unified, not common school district, no public vote at an annual meeting is required.

Wolf River Valley Seeds expanding

Wolf River Valley Seeds, which has produced some of the nation’s top-rated forage products for decades, is expanding its operations to Antigo.

The company, which was started in the early 1970s by Jerome and Marian Wahleithner in White Lake, has purchased the former Fermanich Fuel headquarters located at Third Avenue and Edison Street, and will relocate its marketing, business and distribution facilities here.

Mixed message in new jobless report

Langlade County posted mixed results in the latest jobless numbers released by the state’s Department of Workforce Development this week.

The county’s unemployment rate fell between June and July, to 7.7 percent, a full 1 percent lower then a year ago.

But after being a northwoods leader in employment for months, the county is now sagging behind much of the region, with the sixth highest unemployment rate in the state.

Parade of Homes will reflect the history, beauty of the northwoods

Five homes reflect Antigo history and lakeshore beauty in this year’s 19th annual Parade of Homes sponsored by the Langlade Hospital Auxiliary Saturday, Sept. 20.

This year’s annual event. running from noon to 4 p.m., will feature five impressive homes—three in Antigo and two located on Bass Lake.

Thrivent canned goods contest will benefit food pantry needs

Canned goods may be in short supply in Antigo area grocery stores early next month, but it’s for a great cause.

Entries are being accepted now for the second annual Thrivent Financial “Cans” Hunger contest, a community-wide food drive with flair. Proceeds will benefit the Antigo Area Community Food Pantry.

White Lake school board sets funding referendum for Nov. 14

Voters in the White Lake school district will be asked to approve $250,000 in spending above and beyond state-imposed revenue limits in November.

This week, the White Lake school board unanimously approved the paperwork necessary to hold the spending referendum, which will be identical to an April ballot question which failed by two votes.

Under justice department orders, new culverts installed in Upham

A section of Forest Road in the town of Upham will be closed for the next couple days, allowing for replacement of culverts along the creek flowing between Summit and Bass lakes.

Krueger & Steinfest’s big backhoes will likely make quick work of the project, a fast end to a lingering controversy that dates back several years.
