For more information, visit www.cbi.com INSTRUMENT MAN Job Duties As the party leader, an instrument man is in charge of training and supervising his crew and ensuring they carry out their mapping duties in a safe manner. He confers extensively with engineers, contractors and project managers in the pre-survey stages of projects. Once the parameters of the job are established, he assigns certain jobs to crewmembers based on their areas of expertise. Skill Requirements Knowledge of land surveying principles and practices is a requirement. Skills in using basic and advanced surveying tools and software are necessary. Mathematical abilities are required to prepare analytical field reports. Preferred Background A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of four years' work experience in civil engineering and one year of survey experience are requirements for this position. Surveying certifications are commonly needed. Background in engineering technology is a plus. Cutting and clearing brush from survey lines, loading & unloading equipment required for the survey, assist in determining elevations and laying out stakes, marks points of measurement with elevation, station number, or other marks, assists in measuring between points, places stakes at designated points and specified elevations, assist in measuring between points, assists in operating all survey equipment including: Total Station, GPS Data collector. Survey Instrument person will operate and maintain all technical survey instruments and measuring devices needed to complete different types of survey work assignments for pipeline projects. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: -Place marks, stakes, pins, and monuments. -Drive stakes to fix survey points and determine location data to be placed on stakes. -Hold survey rod and measure distances using tape. -Obtain data pertaining to angles, distances, elevations, and descriptions and attribute various surveying instruments. -Verify levels, alignment, and elevation of items to be constructed. -Perform routine analysis to check applicability, accuracy, and reasonableness of data. -Compile notes, sketches, and records of data obtained and work performed, and keep same in a field book. -Reduce and plot survey notes. -Participate in basic layout and field engineering activities. -Perform maintenance of field equipment and maintain supplies for survey crew. -Work with the Party Chief to meet the goals of the project in a safe and efficient manner.
