Details: We currently have an opening in our Washington, DC office for a Construction Inspector in our Transportation & Infrastructure division. Key responsibilities will include coordinating and performing construction related on-site inspection activities and reviewing the performance of other inspections by subconsultants when needed; ensuring that the inspection team is familiar with the contract plans, specifications, DOT procedures, Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and safety requirements. Further inspector will be responsible for recommending approval of the inspected (in compliance with the Contract Plans and Specifications); monitoring the contractor's plan of operation, advising contractors of violations and recommending adjustments to operations; recommending changes to construction plans to meet field conditions; making field measurements of pay items and recording quantities; conducting materials testing and checking equipment; checking and verifying layout, and preparing daily reports and utilizing construction management software to record such. This position requires frequent contact with: engineers and agency personnel to discuss and resolve field construction issues and to obtain technical guidance in specialty areas of engineering and inspections, the contractor to schedule and coordinate project inspection and resolve problems; with local government and law enforcement agencies to explain work under construction and coordinate traffic control; with suppliers to monitor receipt of materials; with utility companies to coordinate relocation and installation; and with the public to provide information and resolve issues. The position will receive supervision from a Project Manager and or Project/Resident Engineer and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the aforementioned. Required Skills: Associate Degree or other course work in Civil Engineering, Technology or Construction Management is a plus but not a requirement, associated construction inspection experience and inspection certifications will be considered. The Construction Inspector is expected to have 10-15 years of inspection experience including knowledge of roadway, structure, and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and specifications. The candidate must have served in the capacity of a CI on multiple DOT or related utility/roadway/bridge/tunnel projects and possess a solid understanding of current Construction Standards and Specifications. Project experience involving utility construction, relocation and coordination, streetlight and traffic signal installation and stormdrain improvements is a must. Experience with Low Impact Design technology is a plus. Other requirements include a working knowledge of federal safety, environment, and other related Federal regulations. Working knowledge of computerized handheld Field Pads for recording of project activity, Microsoft Office or other currently utilized construction or project management software programs; the ability to read and interpret roadway, bridge, and structure plans and contract specifications; the ability to apply mathematical and other engineering principles to determine field adjustments, maintain detailed reports, perform required materials testing and communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel and the general public. The CI must have materials, concrete and asphalt certifications which may included NICET, ACI and OSHA Safety Training. VDOT and or DDOT project experience is preferred. Operating or assisting in operating all heating equipment (regardless of pressure), engines, turbines, motors, internal combustion engines, pumps, air compressors, generators, ice and refrigerating machines, air-conditioning units and plants, fans, siphons, bridges, also automatic and power-oiling pumps, and all automatic and power driven machines and engines (including accessories). Identifies capital improvements and obtain required estimates/bids. Assists in budget preparation for maintenance expenses. Scheduling / contracting vendors to perform apartment turnover services that exceed the budgeted amount in the given month, will require the written consent of the Property Manager. Required Experience: The Chief Engineer must have 3 - 5 years previous hotel, commercial and/or apartment maintenance supervisory experience. Candidate must be customer service focused and have above average computer skills. Candidate must have extensive knowledge of plumbing systems, appliances, water heaters, chillers/boilers and air conditioning units.
