Neenah standoff ends with man taking his life

NEENAH — Police say a distraught 26-year-old man shot himself with a high-powered rifle in his Neenah home Thursday as police and other emergency workers outside tried to intervene. A relative called police about 12:30 p.m. after the man threatened to shoot himself in his home on Higgins Street between Spruce and Division streets. A nearly three-hour standoff ensued, prompting police to close off traffic on nearby streets and alert residents through Winnebago County’s reverse 911 system to seek shelter inside their homes. NEENAH — A nearly three-hour standoff today on Higgins Avenue started when a man threatened to kill himself and shoot police officers, residents say. The standoff ended about 3:15 p.m., but police have not provided information about how the incident was resolved. Outagamie crash injures five

VANDENBROEK — Five people suffered injuries Wednesday in a two-car crash at the intersection of Outagamie County JJ and N. Telephone scam costs Neenah residents $6,100

An 87-year-old Neenah woman and her 59-year-old son were victims of a telephone scam that cost them more than $6,100 last week. Two arrested for stealing flat-screen televisions from Oshkosh Wal-Mart

Two Oshkosh residents were arrested Monday night after taking several flat-screen television sets, valued at more than $1,000, from Wal-Mart. Oshkosh police were called to Wal-Mart, 351 S. Billionaire investor Carl Icahn is giving up his bid to buy truck maker Oshkosh after less than 25 percent of the company's shares were tendered before his offer expired. Last week Icahn made it clear that he would walk away from his bid that valued the company at about $3 billion if the threshold wasn't met. Appleton police search for church thief

APPLETON — Appleton police are seeking information on a Monday afternoon theft at Sacred Heart Church, 222 E. Fremont St. A man wearing a hat and long coat stole a church employee’s black wallet and black coupon organizer from a purse inside an office drawer, police say. APPLETON — An Appleton man who drove away from the site of an early Sunday morning disturbance in downtown Appleton died after his car crashed in Houdini Plaza. Hard to believe, but we’re less than eight weeks from Appleton’s Feb. 19 primary election for the common council. The nonpartisan spring election is April 2. Death and taxes: Neenah, Menasha operate municipal cemeteries

What municipal service does Neenah and Menasha offer that Appleton, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Little Chute and Combined Locks do not? They care for the dead at taxpayers’ expense. Neenah operates Oak Hill Cemetery, a 45-acre graveyard along the west side of U.S. 41, and Menasha operates an adjacent section of Oak Hill and nearby Resthaven Memorial Park. Teens in custody following high-speed chase

Two teenagers are in custody after allegedly leading authorities on a high-speed chase early Friday morning in Sheboygan and Manitowoc counties, with the teens at one point ditching the stolen vehicle they were traveling in and then stealing another before their eventual arrest. Following the chase, a 17-year-old Sheboygan boy was arrested and brought to the Sheboygan County Detention Center, where he’s now awaiting charges.
