Details: Job Summary: This job is responsible for the overall operation of the laboratory including technical workflow, campus patient service centers, and off-site locations. An incumbent coordinates any technical/equipment issues with the Regional Technical Manager to ensure appropriate equipment decisions are met and ensures the standard operating policies and procedures are understood and followed. The manager determines staffing needs and ensures training programs are comprehensive and complete with expected competency outcomes, and acting as a resource person for the laboratory staff by providing adequate training, continuing education updates and self-enhancement opportunities. Also responsible for staff interviews, selection, performance evaluation, growth planning, discipline to include terminations. An incumbent works in concert with Human Resources to achieve desired staff performance levels while maintaining the core value standards. Participates in cost effective monitoring of supply use, labor overtime use as part of the annual budget process. Participates on appropriate interdisciplinary teams at the hospital representing laboratory services with an emphasis on sample collection, processing and test reporting. Essential Duties: Operations: Manages and evaluates the operations, programs and resources of the assigned clinical area/facility to assure the safe and appropriate delivery of diagnostic and/or therapeutic patient care, achievement of clinical core measurement scores, and to ensure that all activities are conducted in a timely and cost-effective manner and in compliance with organizational values, professional standards, collective bargaining agreements, internal policies/standards/procedures and applicable regulatory requirements; participates in the development of, and implements new clinical systems/programs to enhance existing services and raise the standard of care for the patient population served; ensures that work unit activities, productivity, and/or quality indicators are documented in accordance with FHS guidelines; produces and presents reports on key performance indicators and other significant benchmarking metrics; collaborates with other departments to address and resolve problems, share information and enhance overall effectiveness/productivity. Regulatory Compliance: Ensures that all aspects of clinical operations are conducted and documented in compliance with relevant internal policies, standards and procedures and applicable regulatory requirements; assesses, on a continuous basis, services, patient outcomes, quality control, family/patient satisfaction, staffing needs and operational effectiveness to ensure optimal care delivery; ensures that internal controls are sufficient to provide for accurate, complete and compliant programs and processes; identifies need for changes in standards, programs and services, and develops recommendations for consideration by the Director. Details: An outpatient Oncology Infusion Nurse will provide state-of-the art nursing care to patients undergoing various types of cancer treatments in the infusion area at the Brown Cancer Center. Treatment Clinicians use Nursing Practice Competencies to achieve safe, optimal patient and family centered health outcomes, application of the scientific knowledge, leadership competencies required to coordinate and provide care for these very complex patients. Treatment Clinicians will perform clinical assessments, infusion, educate patients, families, staff, and function as a liaison between patient, family and physician, as well as coordinate and provide patient care in the adolescent, adult and geriatric populations.; Professional Profile competencies to develop professionally as a life long learner and Practices Outcomes competencies to evaluate care based on evidence, the ULH quality model and patient safety goals. Job duties: 1) Performs nursing assessment and lab evaluation on all treatment patients. Elicits pertinent information concerning treatment and any treatment-related side effects. Makes appropriate recommendations based on oncology knowledge, policies and procedures, physician-directed protocols, individual an family preferences and communication with interdisciplinary team. Obtains orders as required and documents patient assessment, recommendations made and patient teaching in the chart. 2) Reviews patient labs to determine if values are within accepted parameters for treatment. The RN calculates ANC, follows established policies and procedures, advises patients of necessary precautions and reschedules lab/treatment per physician-directed protocols. 3) Possesses and in-depth knowledge of oncology and/or blood and marrow transplantation, chemotherapy and biotherapy treatment regimens, medications and blood products used to care for these complex patients. Knows the uses, standard dose, high dose, functions, side effects and management/administration requirements of chemotherapy and biotherapy regimens. 4) Administers chemotherapy and biological agents proficiently (IV, SQ, IM, IP, IL and PO) according to established policies and procedures, ONS, INS, OSHA and NIOSH guidelines. Recalculates BSA, AUC, and all drug doses accurately. Monitors patients for any adverse reactions. 5) Administers blood and blood products proficiently according to established policies and procedures. Monitors patient for any adverse reactions. 6) Demonstrates proficiency with patient care, including specialty oncology procedures, i.e., hepatic artery pump fills, therapeutic phlebotomy, assist with omaya reservoir procedures, assist with bone marrow biopsy procedures ,Intra Peritoneal, hypersensitivity reactions, anaphylaxis, oncology emergencies, assist with apheresis procedures and neutropenic patients. 7) Demonstrates proficiency in establishing and maintaining venous access peripheral IV, mediports, power ports, dual ports, intraperiteneal ports, Hickman, quad ports, apheresis catheters and other central lines. 8) Collaborates with Clinical Trials, staff and physicians to assure compliance with treatment requirements of current clinical studies. Assures proper procedures are followed and appropriately documented. Reports changes in patient condition / adverse reactions to physician and research nurse. 9) The Clinician oversees the flow of the treatment areas to ensure all patients are seen in a timely fashion, patient issues/concerns are addressed and follow-up treatments are scheduled. The Clinician is also responsible for filling out billing sheets on all treatments rendered. 10) Provides comprehensive education and educational materials for patients and families that is site specific for there treatment. Adjusts teaching style to what is most appropriate for the educational and learning limitations of the patient/family. Documents all education in patient chart. 11) Serves as a resource for patients, educational materials and direction to other community support services and resources; serves as a resource to other staff, outside agencies and students concerning current trends and treatments for the Oncology/BMT patient. 12) Provides additional emotional support for the patient and family throughout the treatment process, with particular attention to the special problems and needs of the extremely ill Oncology/BMT patient. Counsels and cares for patients through the life-span under emotionally charged circumstances requiring a high level of nursing expertise, both clinical and psychological. 13) Performs duties in an autonomous manner based on knowledge, established policies and procedures, standards of care and physician-directed protocols. Works with minimal supervision and exercises initiative and independent judgment in dealing with complex patient care and other issues. 14) Participates in assigned committees, FACT preparation, JCAHO preparation, ACOS certification process, magnet preparation and Quality Improvement initiatives i.e., chart audits, hand washing audits, callbacks to the patients and rescheduling no-shows as assigned by supervisor. Provides competent care based on knowledge of nursing research, evidence-based practice and performance improvement. 15) Participates in own professional growth as demonstrated by the following; maintains professional certification in Oncology, attends and participates in national, regional and local BMT/Med.ONC educational conferences and disseminates this information to peers, strives to learn new skills, cross trains to all areas of the treatment area, participates in health-related community and cancer center projects . 16) Works as a team with other clinicians and nurse practitioners by sharing in clinical responsibilities, patient management, training and education of new nurse clinicians, ancillary personnel and physician staff. 17) Successfully completes annual RN skills and Oncology RN skills validations. Completes initial ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Course and maintains current card.. Attains and maintains Oncology Certification. 18) Performs duties in a cost-effective manner, participates in performance improvement activities: Quality improvement and patient safety activities, assists in maintaining compliance with JACHO accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards including code of conduct.
