WPS offers tips for power outages

NORTHWOODS - It can be scary when you're without power.

Thousands of people in the Northwoods didn't have power last week because of severe storms. Wisconsin Public Service sent out more than 100 crews to work on power outages from last week's storms.

Heavy rain is headed to the Northwoods tonight and all of the viewing area is under a Flood Watch. WPS has reminders for folks in case the lights go out again.

New skate park will sit in old location

RHINELANDER - Community members in Rhinelander can expect to see a new skate park on Alban and Phillips Street in the future. The old park closed about five years ago for safety reasons.

Construction and financial issues stopped the renovation of the skate park the last time it was proposed. Project leaders then wanted to have a concrete foundation, but that cost too much. This time, they'll use more affordable material.

Possible multi-million dollar donation could mean new city pool

MERRILL - A four-million dollar donation from an anonymous donor could give leaders in Merrill the opportunity to build a new city pool.

The city closed its pool at Third Street's Stange Park in 2012. The pool didn't meet new federal requirements for people with disabilities. Parks and Recreation Director Dan Wendorf said it didn't make sense to make the changes to such an old pool, but the new opportunity could save them at least five years of work and fundraising.

6 Midwest governors, Japanese officials meet

DES MOINES, IA - Governors from five Midwest states joined Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad on Monday in meetings with Japanese governors, officials, and company executives for the annual gathering of the Midwest U.S.-Japan Association.

The group, founded in 1967, meets yearly to discuss the growth and progress of economic relations of the American Midwest and Japan.

Community learns more about new fire station

RIB MOUNTAIN - Fire fighters need a lot of equipment to fight fires and save lives, but not all small towns can afford the expensive gear. That's why the Rib Mountain and Weston fire departments will now work as one unit. Sunday, they celebrated their big merge and showed off some of their equipment.

What can be cooler in kid's eyes than seeing a helicopter land?

Local group celebrates Grandparents Day, raises money to help seniors enjoy the outdoors

RHINELANDER - A local group dedicated to help seniors enjoy the outdoors got grandparents moving on Sunday. Let's Go Fishing held it's first annual Grandparents Walk.

The group takes seniors, veterans, and the disabled out on their pontoon to enjoy the area lakes. The Rhinelander chapter of the group is the only one in Wisconsin. But, they want to change that and get more chapters running.

Walker, Burke have clear contrasts on education

MADISON - Some of the starkest differences between Gov. Scott Walker and Democratic challenger Mary Burke are on hot-button education policies like expanding private school vouchers and implementing the Common Core academic standards.

With two months to go until the election, both Burke and Walker are trying to influence voters by drawing sharp contrasts in how they would lead the state.

Skydivers and planes bring in locals at Merrill Municipal Airport

MERRILL - You probably don't see people jumping out of a plane everyday, but in Merrill, people got a glimpse of that almost every hour.

This is the 25th year the Merrill Municipal Airport hosted Merill Airport Days. People had the chance to enjoy short flights with a pilot, shopped at a flea market and watched skydivers.
