Leadership Oneida County kicks off fifth year

ONEIDA COUNTY - Improving job opportunities, attracting younger people to the area, and maintaining the natural beauty of our area. A group of people working or living in Oneida County believe doing those things will make the county more successful. That group will work for the next nine months to better understand the county's strengths and find ways to improve the community.

Park Falls looking at possible seaplane access to airport via Flambeau River

PARK FALLS - Park Falls could become a great place to land seaplanes. Park Falls Area Community Development Corporation Administrator Frank Kempf says two pilots are working with the city to see if the airport project is possible.

The Park Falls Airport runs along the Flambeau River. Kempf believes the project would work with the airport set up. Planes could land, refuel, then fly out.

Wisconsin bear hunters back wolf-skinning plan

MADISON - Wisconsin's bear hunters say they support a plan to study whether hunters are letting their dogs fight wolves.

Wisconsin law allows hunters to use dogs to chase down wolves. The Wisconsin Bear Hunters' Association was one of the driving forces behind that provision. Animal rights advocates, though, have raised concerns that the law sets up deadly dog-on-wolf fights in the woods.

Flights resuming after fire at air traffic center forces hundreds of cancellations

CHICAGO - Flights have begun taking off and landing again at Chicago's two airports after a fire at a suburban air traffic control center forced hundreds of cancellations.

All flights in and out of O'Hare and Midway airports were halted for more than five hours, causing disruptions across the U.S. air travel network. More than 850 flights were canceled in Chicago alone.

Seniors stay active at the YMCA with Active Aging Week

RHINELANDER - Warm weather means you may not be thinking of hitting the gym, but with colder, shorter days to come, it may be a good idea to get in that habit early. That's especially true for seniors.

The YMCA of the Northwoods in Rhinelander held it's active aging week this week. They offered free classes for seniors encouraging them to keep moving.

Court dismisses case trying to change Nov. ballot, experts say voter ID law alone will still have big impact on election

WISCONSIN - You probably won't see a different looking ballot for this November's election after a Waukesha County judge dismissed a lawsuit Wednesday asking for the change.

The campaign committee for state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R- Burlington) and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R- Juneau) filed the case earlier in September. The judge dismissed the case because it wasn't properly filed.

Volunteers needed to clean trails

FIFIELD - If you like spending time outdoors, you can help the National Forest Service this Saturday. They need help cleaning parts of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. It's part of National Public Lands Day, and local volunteers will get clean up a historic trail.

"We have two events planned here for that day in the Chequamegon-Nicolet. One here at the Fifield Fire Lookout Tower and the other event is up at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center," said Forestry Technician Brady Howe.

Mother accused of beating, scalding young son

MANITOWOC - A Manitowoc woman is accused of beating and scalding her 5-year-old son who has Down syndrome.

Thirty-one-year-old Ruthann Gneiser is charged with child abuse.

According to the complaint, the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department received a call from medical staff at Aurora Medical Center Monday who said the boy had been brought to the center with heavy bruising on his back and scald burns.

Lac du Flambeau remembers difficult history, looks ahead through boys dormitory project

LAC DU FLAMBEAU - The historic boys dormitory building in Lac du Flambeau now looks like a new, well maintained place.

But the building's past holds decades of memories, some of them painful.

In the early 1900s, the U.S. Government used boarding schools like the one in Lac du Flambeau to try and mold native children to white culture.

Large crowd, construction closures expected to cause traffic delays

MINOCQUA/WOODRUFF - If you plan on driving to Beef-a-rama this weekend, you may need to allow yourself plenty of time and bring your patience.

Two lanes on Highway 51 in Woodruff will be closed down because of construction.

Organizers expect as many as 15,000 people to come out to Beef-a-rama. Some people worry two closed lanes will cause long traffic delays.

Judge dismisses ballot redesign; experts say voter ID law will have a greater impact.

WISCONSIN - You probably won't see a different looking ballot for this November's election. A judge dismissed the case yesterday that was trying to get the ballot redesigned.

Republicans filed the lawsuit earlier this month. They argued that the ballots were confusing and unfairly benefited Democrats.

Some election workers have already sent out absentee ballots. A change might have caused issues.

Planned Parenthood to close another Wisconsin clinic

FON DU LAC - Planned Parenthood has closed its Fond du Lac clinic, the fifth one in Wisconsin shuttered in two years due to a lack of state funding.

None of the health centers provided abortion services.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin CEO Teri Huyck says the closures are the direct consequence of the Legislature eliminating $1 million in state funding in the last budget.

Streetscape project price tag: $1.2 mil for full short term plan

RHINELANDER - A major downtown streetscape project in Rhinelander would cost nearly $1.2 million if city leaders follow through with the entire phase of the short term plan.

City leaders heard financial details of the proposal for the downtown area at a city council meeting Wednesday night.

The upgrades could mean more sidewalk space and more interest in downtown Rhinelander.
