Milwaukee man stops breathing on plane, dies

MILWAUKEE - Authorities say a Milwaukee man died at General Mitchell International Airport after he stopped breathing while on board a flight from Las Vegas.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says 46-year-old Mark Hensiak was on a Southwest Airlines flight when he became unresponsive and stopped breathing. The flight landed at 3 p.m. Saturday, and Hensiak was taken off the plane and treated on the jet way by first responders.

Deputies think some people may be faking to advocate for a political group to get personal information, access into homes

MARATHON COUNTY - Marathon County deputies think some people could be pretending to be affiliated with a political party in order to get access into homes for criminal purposes. They want people to be careful about letting strangers in and giving away personal information.

Deputies say some of these people could be legally advocating for a political party. But some could be lying to get inside of your home.

Community learns about getting sports pilot license

RHINELANDER - Most people spend up to 60 hours to get their private pilot license, but the Rhinelander Airport wanted to show people there's another option.

Rhinelander Flying Service opened its doors to the public so people can get a better understanding of sports pilot license.

It might not have been the best weather to fly in Saturday, but an aspiring sports pilot is eager to get her wings.

Hundreds buy cranberry cheesecake, raise money to grant wishes

EAGLE RIVER - Cakes and treats can sometimes make people feel better.

People with a sweet tooth had many different options today at the 35th annual Cranberry Fest in Eagle River. One treat at the festival didn't just taste great. It helps kids who are sick get a big surprise.

"It's absolutely delicious," says wish granter, Michele Bergstrom. "It's thick, creamy, and it's made with love."

Sword slaying suspect declared incompetent

WATERTOWN - A 29-year-old man accused of killing another man with a sword in Watertown has been declared incompetent to stand trial.

Young Choi, of Watertown, wanted to represent himself at trial Friday in Jefferson County.

Dr. Kent Berney, caretaker of Choi after the incident, testified he believed Choi was incompetent to proceed with the trial, which the state agreed to.

Runners hit the trails for the Nutty Run, admire fall scenery

RHINELANDER - Runners didn't let a little bit of rain stop them from hitting the trails in Rhinelander on Saturday. The YMCA of the Northwoods hosted its first annual Nutty Run 5K.

The run was scheduled for October 4th because organizers thought it would be the peak week for leaves to change colors. They want people to enjoy the Northwoods during all the seasons of the year.

Freeze could end growing season for immature crops

DES MOINES, IOWA - A freeze could stop the growing season in the upper Midwest as far south as Nebraska and Iowa, leaving farmers in a difficult situation because much of the region's corn and soybean fields are not quite ready for harvest.

The area of most concern includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, where just 40 percent to 50 percent of the corn crop is mature, but a U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist says a freeze could reach as far south as Iowa and Nebraska.

Technology helps find graves from asylum cemetery

GRAND CHUTE - Modern technology is helping researchers locate where residents of an Appleton area mental health facility were buried.

Peter Peregrine, a Lawrence University anthropology professor, brought students to the cemetery last weekend to conduct a geomagnetic survey of the grounds of the former Outagamie County Insane Asylum.

He will complete a diagram to show the locations of the lost grave sites. The last markers were removed in the 1970s.

5 charged in killing of 20-year-old in Superior

SUPERIOR - Five people have been charged in the killing of a 20-year-old man during an attempted robbery in Superior.

17-year-old Chance Andrews is charged with felony murder and accused of shooting 20-year-old Garth Velin Tuesday evening.

Kyham Dunn, Teah Phillips, Kane Robinson and Dallas Robinson, who range in age from 17 to 20, were all charged Thursday and Friday with being accomplices to felony murder.

Wild rice harvester hopes his high volume processer can give process a 21st century upgrade

MOLE LAKE - A wild rice harvester in Forest County thinks he could change the way wild rice gets processed. He says his machine can save days or even weeks of work.

Arlyn Ackley built the electrical powered processer that uses revolving paddles in a 55 gallon drum to hull the rice.

Native Americans historically did this by dancing on the rice. Ackley remembers dancing the rice for his dad when he was a kid to remove the hull from the rice.

Bear breaks into house, leaves lasting memories

RHINELANDER - We see bears in the Northwoods just about every day. It's pretty common to see them in their natural habitat. There's one place we don't expect to see them, and that's in your house.

"It was almost like a car crashing through, just a big mass coming through that window and knocking things over,"

That's the way Isaac Wakely describes how a bear sounded as it broke into his parents' Rhinelander home.

Deputy cleared in shooting at his Plover home

PORTAGE COUNTY - The Portage County sheriff's deputy who shot and killed an intruder at his home last May won't face any charges.

Portage County District Attorney Louis Molepske says he's determined Detective Tony Gischia acted in self-defense when he shot 30-year-old Charles Jameson at Gischia's Plover home.

Gischia was off duty when he returned home with his fiancee and encountered a man in black clothing.

Where the candidates stand; 85th and 86th Assembly seats covering Wausau and surrounding area

WAUSAU - A few hundred votes could decide who represents voters from the 85th Assembly seat. The district covers parts of Marathon and Shawano County. Rep. Mandy Wright (D-Wausau) won the 2012 race by a little more than one percent.

This year Republican David Heaton will try to take the seat.

The two debated Wednesday in Wausau alongside Rep. John Spiros and Democrat Nancy Stencil.

Group sues state over campaign coordination

MADISON - A conservative group has filed a federal lawsuit asking that a Wisconsin law limiting coordination between third party organizations and political candidates be declared unconstitutional.

Citizens for Responsible Government Advocates filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Milwaukee on Thursday. It names members of the state elections board and Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm as defendants.
