Chevalier was 2-for-3 with five RBIs on the day to lead the Eagles (5-1, 4-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-10). Ty Latender and Forest Webster each had two hits.

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School sophomore Morgan Klitzke takes a shot on goal Friday against Iron Mountain. Klitzke had three goals and the Hawks won 10-0.
Morgan Klitzke had three goals, Sarah Dickmann, Megan Klitzke and Louisa Keenan had two each, and the Shawano Community High School girls soccer team earned a 10-0 win over Iron Mountain for its first win of the season Friday.
The Hawks (1-2, 0-1 Bay) were in control from the start, getting goals from Keenan and Morgan Klitzke — both forwards — in the third and fourth minutes of the game.
“We were the more aggressive team all night,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “They had a few shots on goal opportunities, but we did control the middle and the front very well, kept possession most of the game.”
Megan Klitzke, a striker and Morgan’s twin sister, scored the next two goals. The first came 10 minutes later off a header in front of Iron Mountain goalie Emmye Hicks. The second, 22 minutes into the match, came when Teagan Monfils’ shot bounced off Hicks’ arms to Megan Klitzke.
Morgan Klitzke scored in the 35th minute, and Dickmann, a sophomore midfielder, scored in the 37th minute, putting the Hawks up 6-0 by halftime.
Iron Mountain switched to Hannah Hakamaki in goal in the second half, but Shawano put in four more goals.
Dickmann and Keenan each hit their second goals, followed by Morgan Klitzke’s third. With 6 minutes left in the match, Lexi Dobberstein added goal No. 10.
Midfielder Lindsey McFarlane had three assists.
Tessa Kemp and Carlie Hinnefeld combined for two saves and the shutout in goal for Shawano.
The Hawks are hoping for more of a test Saturday at a tournament at Wausau West.
“The lopsided games — it’s nice to get the win — but it’s always nice to get the challenge,” Croschere said. “Sometimes it’s good to get the challenge because to shows you holes in the team.”
The team remains a work in progress, the coach said, and the early nonconference games are helping to solidify the team after early-season delays because of weather.
“We’re still kind of learning positions and who is going to be where,” Croschere said. “Everything is up in the air. I’ll make changes if I need to.”

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School junior Braden Mueller watches a shot Friday at Shawano Lake Golf Course.
Senior Ian Lewis had the meet’s best score, and the Shawano Community High School boys golf team beat Oconto Falls and Seymour, but lost to Marinette, in a meet Friday at Shawano Lake Golf Course in Shawano.
Lewis carded a 37. Teammates Braden Mueller shot a 40, Garrett Schlise a 43 and Cole Huntington a 49.
“The season is pretty young and it’s happening so fast,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “So far, Ian and Braden have been playing very well.”
Lewis shot a par 36 earlier this week and was one over on Friday.
“Our goal is really to get that No. 3-4-5 spots going,” Kugler said.
Shawano’s team score of 169 beat Oconto Falls (181) and Seymour (192).
Kugler said playing on their home course helped the Hawks.
“Last year, we didn’t really have the opportunity to play at home because of all that bad weather,” he said. “You generally play better at home.”
Marinette was able to beat Shawano with a meet-best 165.
“They have two young freshmen playing the No. 4 and 5 positions that are absolutely killing it,” Kugler said. “Those two guys have been scoring great. They already had three very solid guys at the top.”
Kugler said Marinette could run away with the Bay Conference.
The Hawks face another potentially tough Bay Conference team, New London, on Monday.
“They’ve been playing very well, too,” Kugler said. “That will be a big one for us. If we can compete with them, that would be great. A win would be fantastic.”
Kugler said his team is just going to keep at it.
“We’re going to try and get better and better as the year goes on,” he said.

Jason Arndt, [email protected]
Leader Photo by Jason Arndt Bonduel High School sophomore Clare Martell crosses the finish line at the Oconto Falls Triangular Invite on Thursday. Martell captured top-10 finishes in the 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run, and also was part of the fifth-place 4x400-meter relay team.
Days without practice and bad weather contributed to the sixth- and eighth-place finishes by the Bonduel High School boys and girls track teams, respectively, Thursday at the 64th annual Oconto Falls Invitational.
“A lot of our kids were at a three-day SkillsUSA (career training competition) event, so they went a couple days without sleep and some of their performances showed,” coach Jim Watry said. “They are tired; a couple of days with no sleep will do that to you.”
However, there were glimpses of promise amid the rain, including senior Hunter Berry, who won both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in the 10-team meet.
“Last year was his first year in track, and he has already broke 4.40 in the mile this year,” Watry said. “I am glad he came out because he is a great distance runner.”
Teammate Caleb Dowling, who finished sixth in the 200-meter dash, echoed Watry’s comments.
“He is an incredible runner and came out of nowhere last year and he has always run really well,” Dowling said.
Bonduel’s squadron of freshman girls also produced top-10 performances.
“The Sorenson twins and the Palmer twins are very talented and will continue to develop,” Watry said. “They are already standouts on the team.”
Freshman Anna Palmer captured fifth in the 400-meter run and seventh in the 800-meter run.
“To be honest, today’s races were my first races in the 400 and 800, so I did not know what to expect, but there is always room for improvement,” Palmer said.
Freshmen Ashlie Mastey and Hayley Sorenson teamed up with junior Whitney Banker and sophomore Clare Martell to produce a fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

The Bonduel High School girls track and field team took third Monday at the Gillett Invitational.
Oconto Falls won the meet, and Suring placed second. Menominee Indian finished seventh.
Forecasts put the meet in jeopardy, but most of the rain held off until the end, though more than a few athletes could work on their preparation for the cold.
“They don’t take into account that, when it’s cold like this, you have to warm up up at least twice as much as normal,” Bonduel coach James Watry said. “Their performances reflect some of the lack of warming up. It’s a good lesson to learn.”
Bonduel won two events. Senior Mallory Mews won the 3,200-meter run and placed second in the 1,600-meter run. Freshman Emily Sorenson took first in the long jump and placed second in the 200-meter dash.
Megan Fischer took second in the high jump.
Menominee Indian saved its best for last.
In the final throw of the final event of the meet, sophomore Ania Smith broke her own Menominee Indian record in the discus with a toss of 121 feet, 7 inches to win that event.
“I’m excited,” Smith said after she beat the record. “I don’t usually throw well in the cold. I pulled it together in the end.”
Smith threw 120-10 in the discus as a freshman to set the record. She has also broken school records in the shot put this season.

Offensively for the Hawks, senior Taylor Prey was 2 for 3 with a RBI, and junior Grant Wainio added a solo home run.
“Clint pitched a really good ball game, changed speeds well and kept them off balance,” Shawano coach Rob Wolff said. “We had some really key hits that helped tonight. We didn’t have a lot of hits but the ones we did have were big ones.”
The loss dropped L-C to 2-3 in the Bay and 4-4 overall.

“It was mainly survival out there by the end of the round,” Bonduel coach Dan Anderson said. “What started out as a cold round of golf turned into misery. Especially for those who didn’t come prepared for the elements.”
Maverick Bushman had a 49 to pace Witt-Birn, and Jared Sawall’s 52 was the low score for Marion.

The Bonduel High School baseball team’s bats had the wind at their backs Friday, even if they didn’t need it.
The Bears piled up 15 hits on their way to a 13-5 win over Wittenberg-Birnamwood in Wittenberg.
Jacob Wudtke reached base four times and hit two doubles, Travis Wollenberg added three hits, including a double, and both had three RBIs to lead Bonduel (3-1, 3-0 Central Wisconsin Conference-8).
Hunter VanderLinden added three hits and two RBIs. Jordan Richter was 2 for 2 with an RBI.
Connor Rosin, who spent six innings pitching into the wind, had a pair of doubles and an RBI.
“I thought we played well,” assistant coach Eric Greunewald said. “We did a nice job of putting the ball in play and getting on base.”
The Chargers (0-3, 0-3 CWC-8) held tough until the fifth inning, when Wollenberg hit a double to score Wudtke and break the 4-4 tie.
From there, it was all Bonduel, as the Bears scored four runs in each of the last two innings. Wittenberg-Birnamwood pitcher Keegan Miller walked the first three betters in the top of the sixth, then VanderLinden hit a two-run single.
That prompted Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Dan Kapitz to switch to Kyler Deruchkowski on the mound, but the Bears weren’t done. Deruchkowski walked Wudtke, struck out Kyle Frischer, then gave up a two-run single to Wollenberg before the Charger defense escaped the inning.
Miller had an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, but the Chargers couldn’t get much going.
In the seventh, Rosin had an RBI double. Wudtke added a two-RBI double and scored on a Wittenberg-Birnamwood error.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bonduel’s defense retired the first three batters.
Rosin finished with seven strikeouts and three walks, while allowing five runs on nine hits. Lloyd Allen pitched the last inning.
“Connor did a nice job of keeping his cool,” Greunewald said.
Sam Szews had two singles and an RBI and pitched the first five innings for Witt-Birn. He allowed five runs on nine hits, struck out three and walked two.
“I thought Sam did a real nice job,” Kapitz said.
He said switching pitchers late in the game was hard under the conditions.
“The name of the game is throwing strikes,” Kapitz said. “They pulled away at the end because we couldn’t find the strike zone and they had some timely hits.”
Matt Schiltz had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for the Chargers. Nick Kapitz had a pair of singles.
The Bears took an early 3-0 lead and were up 4-3 at the end of three innings. The Chargers scored a run in the fourth to tie the game.
“We’re giving up way too many runs,” Dan Kapitz said. “We’re not a club that is going to score a lot of runs. … It’s going to be hard to win until we cut down the errors, walks and make plays defensively.”

Contributed Photo Mark Schraufnagel, center, Wisconsin DNR conservation warden, presents Mike Schulze, left, and John Hoeffs with watches in recognition of their 25 years teaching hunter safety courses.
Twenty-six years ago, Mike Shulze was recruited to help teach a hunter safety class. He’s been at it ever since.
Lloyd Heinz, who worked for the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, recruited Shulze as an assistant in 1988. A year later, Heinz retired and Shulz was certified to teach the class himself.
Schulz and fellow instructor John Hoeffs were each honored for 25 years of service to the program in February by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Warden Mark Schraufnagel presented the two with watches.
“There’s not a lot of instructors that have been doing it that long,” Schraufnagel said. “I think it’s just a testament to them. They’re volunteering, they’re not paid to do this. They just think it’s important to pass on the tradition of hunting and that folks do it safely.”
Shulze said he is motivated by the young hunters wanting to learn.
“After 26 years, you get this thing about, how many more years am I going to do it?” Shulze said. “Am I getting a little tired of doing it, with all the rule changes? That all comes into it, but then you think about the young kids wanting to go hunting. There’s still a lot of interest in keeping the young kids going.”
Another positive?
“It’s still a lot of fun,” he said.
Shulze and Hoeffs have taught their class together for the last 15 years. There are four other instructors also helping the group.
“I have a really great group of guys,” Shulze said. “They’ve been real good to me. It makes a lot of difference with the group of guys I have.”
For the last eight years the class has been taught at the Navarino Nature Center. Before that it was taught at J&H Game Farm, where the class still holds its field days. Navarino and J&H, Shulze said, have been very supportive over the years.
“Once I got to their (Navarino Nature Center) facilities, they helped me out tremendously,” he said. “They have a big screen projector; I can plug in a laptop and show videos.
“(J&H Game Farm) always let us come out, and they don’t charge us to shoot sporting clays, .22s, bows, stuff like that, for our field day.”
Schraufnagel and Shulze agree one of the most important groups in supporting hunter safety has been the Woodland Deerhunters—Gresham Chapter.
“The Woodland Deerhunters—Gresham Chapter has been pretty generous,” Schraufnagel said. “They are one of the conservation groups around here that do a lot for a lot of different groups.”
The group also holds a dinner to recognize hunter safety instructors in the area.
According to Schraufnagel, education efforts led by instructors such as Shulze and Hoeffs are having a real impact statewide.
“Thanks to hunters safety, if you look at the statistics, hunting has become more and more safe,” he said. “I think that’s because of the work that they do.”
Hoeffs did not return phone calls from the Leader seeking comment.

A late rally and some solid defense gave the Bonduel High School softball team its second Central Wisconsin Conference-8 win of the season Thursday, a 9-7 road victory over Weyauwega-Fremont.
With the win, the Bears (2-1, 2-1 CWC-8) have exceeded last year’s 1-6 conference mark only three games into the season.
The game, which was moved to Weyauwega because rain made Bonduel’s diamond unplayable, looked bleak five innings in after the Indians took a 7-1 lead.
“We were up 1-0, and we thought we were kind of on a roll, and then they had that run,” Bonduel coach Chris Reinke said. “We just kind of pulled them in and said, ‘Hey, they made us come over here, let’s get the bats going.’”
The Bears got their footing in the third, scoring three runs, cutting the lead to 7-4.
In the seventh, the first two Bonduel batters walked, then Weyauwega-Fremont allowed three batters to reach base on fielder’s choices. Alexa Reinke had an RBI single, Jennifer Dowden added a run on a bases-loaded walk and Kaylee Rynish hit a two-RBI single to give the Bears an 8-7 lead. Courtney Schmidt added an RBI single to cushion Bonduel’s lead.
Weyauwega-Fremont (5-2, 4-2 CWC-8) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and a single, then tried a bunt to get a score, but the play backfired. Third baseman Alexa Reinke charged the ball, made the throw home to get an out, and then the Bears made a play at third for the double play. Dowden struck out the last batter to seal the win.
Dowden finished with seven strikeouts and three walks. She pitched the entire game, allowing 13 hits and seven runs.
Reinke finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Karissa Akey took the loss for Weyauwega-Fremont. She pitched seven innings, allowed four hits, issued 15 walks and struck out eight.
The weather had both pitchers switching balls as often as they could.
“I think (the rain) hurt (Akey) more,” Chris Reinke said. “It seemed to rain more when they were out in the field. The batters were patient; that was very helpful.”
Miranda Schmidt scored on a passed ball in the first inning for to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Shawano Speedway has been forced to delay the start of its 2014 racing season for the second straight week.
Track conditions and forecasts of rain and cold temperatures prompted the speedway to move its season start from Saturday to May 3, with a practice session scheduled for May 2.
“It is still pretty wet yet,” said Dale Hodkiewicz, Shawano Speedway president. “The grounds are wet and rain is supposed to come tomorrow, and the weather is going to be miserably cold. We’re talking a high of 49 on Saturday, 30s in the evening. That isn’t very hospitable.”
This is the second year in a row where the track has been delayed by two weeks. Last year, the track opened on May 4.
“We know we play outside, we’re at the will of Mother Nature,” Hodkiewicz said. “When she lets us race, I guess we’ll race.”
Hodkiewicz said the drivers are ready to go but understand the situation and are taking the extra time to get their cars ready.
“They’ve been very supportive of our decisions to not open because of the weather,” he said. “They all want to race, but they want to enjoy themselves when they are there.”
Hodkiewicz said the practice session is very important for both the drivers and the track managers.
“It gives the drives a chance to shake out cars,” he said, “and then it gives some rookie guys a chance to get around the track without competition, just get around the track and get a feel for it.”
The track workers use the session to see how the track is holding up.
“We see what kind of adjustments we have to make to race on Saturday,” Hodkiewicz said. “It’s good for both of us.”
If conditions don’t improve the track would move both the practice and opening night back another week.

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Menominee Indian High School pitcher Amos Corn celebrates getting a strike out to end Tuesday’s game against Bowler in Keshena. The Eagles won, 5-2.
Amos Corn had a home run and pitched seven solid innings, Lowell Chevalier added three RBIs, and the Menominee Indian High School baseball team beat Bowler 5-2 Tuesday in Keshena.
The two Central Wisconsin Conference-10 foes were tied 2-2 heading into the fifth.
Bowler (0-2, 0-2 CWC-10) threatened to take a lead, loading the bases with two outs, but Quintin Rondow hit a bouncing ground ball to shortstop Ty Latender, who came up with the ball and made the throw to first to get the Eagles (1-1, 1-1 CWC-10) out of trouble.
“Ty is one of the best shortstops I’ve seen,” Menominee Indian coach Chris Rice said. “He’s only a sophomore and he continues to get better every game.”
In the bottom of the inning, Menominee Indian took control with back-to-back singles by Waylon Penass and Forrest Webster, followed by back-to-back doubles by Latender and Chevalier that put the Eagles up 5-2.
For Bowler coach Ray Murphy, it was a familiar script. His Panthers lost to Rosholt 11-1 Monday night after a rough fifth inning.
“That fifth inning has been our Achilles heel,” he said. “We haven’t been able to get by that fifth inning to maintain a close game.”
Chevalier finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs. His third-inning double scored Webster, who also finished 2 for 3, to tie the game at 1-1.
“Lowell has been a kid who worked since September on baseball,” Rice said.
Corn sent a ball sailing over the center field fence to start the scoring in the second inning.
“Helping his own cause,” Rice said. “As soon as it came off the bat, you could tell it was gone.”
On the mound, Corn allowed two runs on 10 hits, struck out seven and walked one.
Thomas Kazik led Bowler, going 3 for 4. Walker Miller was 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the third inning. Trae Opper had an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game.
“The key tonight is they got a couple of key hits when they needed it, and we didn’t,” Murphy said. “We had runners on a couple of times, but you still have to have that big hit.”
Bowler pitcher Cody Thiex took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked one. Zack Olson pitched an inning of relief, striking out one, walking one and allowing no hits and no runs.
“We’re kind of struggling right now with pitching,” Murphy said. “We’re kind of experimenting with some other people pitching. We’re hoping by the second half we’ll get things turned around.”
