3 receive Jirschele awards

Sat, 05/24/2014 - 6:13am
Lacy is Nice Guy Award winnerBy:

Grace Kirchner, Leader Correspondent

Three former Clintonville High School athletes and a Green Bay Packers running back were honored May 10 at the 22nd annual Doug Jirschele Memorial Sports Award Banquet at Clintonville Lanes.

The charity banquet is sponsored by the Clintonville American Legion Post 63 to benefit the Clintonville American Legion baseball team and other youth baseball activities. The banquet is dedicated to Doug Jirschele in honor of his contributions to sports in the community.

Brian Dunlavy, Jeni Yaeger and James Peters were presented with Doug Jirschele Sports Awards, given to people with local ties who have achieved success in the world of sports.

Dunlavy grew up on a farm just outside of Clintonville, graduated from Clintonville High School in 1971 and attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he played baseball and football. He played baseball for the Clintonville A’s from 1972-1986. He began his teaching career in Clintonville, where he coached sports year round. He was head football coach from 1998-2009, leading his team to the playoffs seven times. He coached Legion baseball from 2001-05, going to state in 2002. He is now retired.

Yaeger graduated from Clintonville High School and then from Ripon College in 2009. She played volleyball and basketball all four years in high school, where she earned many honors. She continued to play both sports at Ripon, where she was named Academic All-Conference three years. She is employed at GreenStone Farm Credit Services.

While attending Clintonville High School, Peters participated in football, basketball and track. He graduated from Michigan College of Mining and Technology in Houghton with a degree in civil engineering in 1958. While in college, he played football and basketball. He was a licensed professional engineer in Michigan and New Mexico and helped or was the project manager in the construction of many notable projects, including the addition to the former AAL building in Appleton, Wausau Hospital, Neenah Senior High School and others. He is retired.

Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy earned the Nice Guy Award. After being drafted by the Packers in the second round in 2013, Lacy became the NFL’s rookie of the year while setting several rookie franchise regular season records. He was named second-team All-Pro by The Associated Press and earned a bid to the Pro Bowl. Lacy was the first Packer to earn rookie of the year honors since John Brockington in 1971.

Jodi Behnke earned the Forgotten Person Award for being active with the Little League baseball teams and helping with putting on the banquet.

Retired Ripon College men’s basketball coach Bob Gillespie was the guest speaker for the banquet. In 31 years under his guidance, the men’s basketball program had just four losing seasons. The basketball ball court at the Storzer Center is named after the coach. He also became Ripon’s all-time winningest baseball coach.

Character and values is what matters in life, Gillespie told the audience. He told his players to “respect the game, give your absolute best, nothing else, never show negative emotion, never talk back to the umpires, play with class, don’t be boastful, conduct your life the right way.”

WBAY-TV new anchor Bill “Schmidt” Jartz, a Clintonville High School graduate, served as master of ceremonies.

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School center fielder LaRissa O’Kimosh snags a fly ball Thursday during the Hawks’ Division 2 regional game against Seymour at Martzke Sports Complex. Shawano won the game 11-1 in five innings.

In a game that stirred memories of the Hawks’ regional championship a season ago, the Shawano Community High School softball team earned an 11-1 victory over Seymour in five innings Thursday to open the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament at Martzke Sports Complex.

Last year, the Hawks started their regional championship run with a 12-2 win over Clintonville in six innings.

“It’s kind of reflection of last year,” Shawano senior center fielder LaRissa O’Kimosh said. “We’ve got the speed, we’ve got the drive hitters. It’s basically the same team with different people.”

No. 3 Shawano (9-12, 6-9 Bay Conference) will face No. 2 Notre Dame, which dispatched Clintonville 10-1 in five innings Thursday, Tuesday in Green Bay. It’s a rematch of last year’s regional championship game, won by Shawano 11-10.

The Hawks finished early on Thursday with an RBI base hit by O’Kimosh to cap a five-run fifth inning that gave the Hawks the 11-1, 10-run rule win.

“I honestly didn’t think I was going to be the one to hit the game-winning run in,” O’Kimosh said. “I was just going up there to hit and get them around.”

O’Kimosh was 3 for 4 on the day with four RBIs.

Seymour (2-16, 2-14 Bay) ran into pitching trouble in the fifth when relief pitcher Olivia Bluma left the game with a arm injury after pitching one inning of relief. Shawano scored on a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball before Seymour turned to Zoe Moehring, who immediately walked Allison Raddant to reload the bases.

“I felt badly for Seymour. They had a nice second pitcher and she had an arm injury and they had to go to a third pitcher who didn’t have a lot of time to warm up,” Shawano coach Kevin Isaacson said. “That was a challenge for her. It was an unfortunate situation. We did our job and put the bat on the ball.”

Shawano scored twice more on passed balls, before O’Kimosh was set up with a runner in scoring position and the 10-1 lead.

“That’s the way we like to play,” Isaacson said. “Our speed players get on the bases and get around, and our drive hitters get the ball in the outfield. When we do that, we’re a tough team to contend with.”

Nicki Ainsworth led off Shawano’s half of the third inning with a single. She scored on a Courtney Baumann single. Freshman Saige Henning added a two-RBI double to give the Hawks the 3-0 lead.

Seymour got one back on a Taylor Matustak single, but Shawano caught Erin Blohm trying to advance to third to end the inning.

Baumann, who earned the win pitching for Shawano, held strong in a tough fourth inning after Seymour opened with three hits to load the bases with no outs.

“Great kid, she just fights out there,” Isaacson said. “You saw her get tougher when the situation got tough.”

Seymour’s Rebecca Simpson flew out to center field, where O’Kimosh launched a rocket to home plate to move a runner back to third base. Brianna Laabs got a runner out at home on a Sarah Schaltz bunt for the second out, and then Seymour’s lead-off hitter Anna Schenk ground out to end the inning.

“Two ground balls and we’re out of there, that was a big sequence,” Isaacson said.

Baumann allowed one run on seven hits and walked two in five innings of work.

Julie Beck, Raddant and O’Kimosh all had RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth inning to put Shawano up 6-1.

The Shawano Community High School girls soccer team bested Denmark 2-0 in the first game of the Bay Conference tournament Thursday in Shawano.

Lindsey McFarlane got the scoring going for the Hawks (11-6, 6-2 Bay) with a goal four minutes into the second half. Megan Klitzke, who had the assist on the goal, scored her own goal three minutes later on an assist from her sister, Morgan, in front of the goal to take a 2-0 lead over Denmark (5-7-1, 1-5-1 Bay).

“It just kind of got through, and Morgan got a foot on it and tapped it to her sister,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “She put it in the back of the net.

The Hawks spent a lot of time Thursday in front of the goal. Shawano goalie Carlie Hinnefeld had a quiet day, as the Hawks dominated the field position battle.

“We had a lot possession on their end of the field tonight,” Croschere said. “Carlie only had one save. I don’t know if she even touched the ball more than once in the second half, and it was just a ball rolling through.”

Shawano will advance to the second round of the tournament Tuesday, but a time and opponent were not set by the Leader’s press time.

To run or to walk

SCHS seniors must choose between track meet and graduationBy:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Carlos Merino competes in the long jump during the Bay Conference meet Saturday in Denmark. Merino and his fellow seniors on the SCHS track and field team have to decide between competing the the sport’s postseason and walking in graduation.

Walk across the stage for graduation or compete for WIAA track honors — that was the choice Shawano Community High School seniors had to make this week.

The WIAA Division 1 sectional and the SCHS graduation ceremony will both be held May 30. The conflict means some seniors had to choose between the two, others will not compete in some of their best events in the hope of getting back from the site of the sectional, Saint Norbert College Schneider Stadium in De Pere, in time for graduation.

Distance runner Lindsey Kurtz, the Class of 2014 valedictorian, and seven other seniors decided to participate in graduation rather the tourney series.

“It was a pretty difficult decision for me,” said long jumper and relay-team member Carlos Merino, who decided to compete. “My mother doesn’t like it at all. … It’s an opportunity for me and my teammates to go to sectionals and possibly make a run to state.”

Brice Bergner also decided to compete with Merino and juniors Jake Klister and Dan Boivin in the 4x200 relay.

“I really would like to do both,” Bergner said. “I really loved track ever since I was in middle school. I just think I would regret it if I didn’t go to regionals and sectionals.”

Bergner, who will also compete in the 100 and 200 dashes, and Merino, agreed that winning the relay at the Bay Conference championships last week influenced their decision.

“I think we have to improve our time by 1 or 2 seconds to make it to state,” Bergner said. “I think we have a pretty good shot at that one.”

Merino also had extra incentive of trying to reach his goal of jumping 20 feet.

“He had a 19-8 1/2 at the Bay Conference; he wants another shot at getting that 20-foot mark,” Shawano coach Scott Smurawa said. “It’s right there.”

Smurawa also has a personal stake in the seniors’ decisions.

His daughter, Kia Smurawa, will try to compete in the long and triple jumps and make it back to Shawano for graduation. She and classmate Isabella Gonzalez, who will compete in the high jump, will not run the 4x200 relay. Malory Soper also opted not to join the relay team.

“It’s definitely tough,” Gonzalez said. “It was a hard decision.

“I’ve sat down and figured out what time we have to be here and what time graduation starts. Thankfully, high jump is the first event at the meet.”

The seniors had to make their decisions this week because the regional meet is Tuesday at Bay Port High School. The top four regional finishers advance to sectional, but if a qualifier does not compete, the slot is not filled — denying another athlete the opportunity to compete.

“If you know you are going to graduation and you’re not going to be at sectionals, then as a good sportsman, we’re going to give someone else the opportunity (at regionals),” coach Smurawa said.

Hawks beat Seymour, get 3rd seed

Wed, 05/21/2014 - 9:14pm
By:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

With a 1-0 win over Seymour on Wednesday, the Shawano Community High School girls soccer team secured the third seed in the Bay Conference tournament, which begins Thursday.

The Hawks (10-6, 5-2 Bay) beat Seymour (3-7-1, 3-4) on a Morgan Klitzke goal in the 78th minute of the match. Klitzke got the goal off a deflection of Sarah Dickmann’s free kick.

“It kind of bounced in front of the keeper and she didn’t play it out of the air,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “Morgan came in and took the ball and put it in the goal.”

Freshman goalie Carlie Hinnefeld preserved the tie with about 10 minutes left in the match.

“She kind of pushed one out of the goal that almost could have went in,” Croschere said. “She stretched for it, fell into the goal herself and pushed it out. That was a nice save that kept us in the game and helped us win it. “

Hinnefeld, who had six saves on the day, has solidified her spot as the Hawks’ goalie as the team prepares to make a push in the Bay tournament.

The match began Monday but was called at halftime because of rain. The two teams resumed play Wednesday, getting the game in before the conference seeded the teams for the tournament.

The win gives Shawano a home match against sixth-seeded Denmark (5-7-1, 1-5-1) Thursday.

Shawano beat Denmark 5-1 on May 15, but Croschere said he expects the Vikings will be tougher this time around.

“We beat them the first time, but I know they were missing a couple of people with other commitments,” he said. “It might be a tougher game this time.”

West De Pere (11-1-2, 6-0-1) earned the top seed, with New London (5-6-1, 5-1-1) taking second. Marinette (7-3-2) is the fourth seed, Seymour is fifth, Hortonville (2-11, 1-6) seventh and Luxemburg-Casco (2-10-2, 0-6-1) eighth.

Shawano and Marinette finished the regular season tied with 10 conference points each. The Hawks earned the higher seed thanks to a regular-season win against the Marines on May 6.

Round 2 of the tournament will be played Tuesday, with Round 3 on May 29.

“I think we’re going in at a good place right here,” Croschere said. “We’ve won four straight. We’re clicking right now.”

The Shawano Community High School boys golf team hung on to third place in the Bay Conference thanks to a third-place finish in the conference meet Tuesday at Brown County Golf Course in Hobart.

“It’s great; that’s what we were going for today,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “It would have been very difficult to overtake Marinette and New London coming in.”

Marinette and New London tied for the conference lead with 30 points, with Marinette taking first and New London taking second Tuesday, edging out Shawano by just a stroke 336-335.

Heading into the meet, Shawano and Oconto Falls were tied with 10 conference points each. With the third-place finish, the Hawks finished with 22 points for the season, edging out Oconto Falls (18). West De Pere, which finished fourth Tuesday, also pushed the Hawks, finishing tied with Oconto Falls for fourth. Hortonville finished in fifth with 14 points.

“That third-place battle, it was us, Oconto Falls, Hortonville and West De Pere,” Kugler said. “They were all right on our tails.”

The Hawks’ No. 3 and No. 4 golfers, senior Garret Schlise and junior Cole Huntington, respectively, had a major role in keeping Shawano in third.

“Normally, we kind of hang our hats on Ian (Lewis) and Braden (Mueller), but today I think it was Garret and Cole,” Kugler said. “It was Garret and Cole’s show today. They really came up big.”

Schlise tied with No. 2 golfer Braden Mueller with a round of 82 to lead the Hawks.

“Garret showed what his potential is today,” Kugler said. “He played very well. If he doesn’t throw in an 82 like that, we probably would have been in a lot of trouble.”

Senior Ian Lewis came in a stroke behind at 83. Huntington carded an 89. Ryan Hoffman shot a 94.

“Fantastic finish for us,” Kugler said.

The course was wet after a lot of rain Monday, but Kugler said his team wasn’t hindered by it.

“The one thing you weren’t getting today was roll,” Kugler said. “You’d hit in the fairway and it would stop right there. The course played longer than it normally would. I was totally impressed with how my kids played with that.”

New London’s Austin Elsner was the meet medalist, shooting 73. He was also the Bay Conference golfer of the year.

The Hawks will play a round at Luxemburg-Casco on Friday, ahead of its WIAA Division 1 regional Tuesday at Reid Municipal Golf Course in Appleton.

“The boys had a great day,” Bonduel coach James Watry said. “We knew we had a balanced team going in there. It ended up working out pretty well. We won every open race on the boys side, from the 200 to 3,200, and the 4x400.”

Hunter Berry won championships in the 1,600-meter and 3,200 runs. Isaac Palmer won the 400 and 800, and ran a leg of the winning 4x400 relay team with Zach Zernicke, Trebor Rueckert and Caleb Dowling. Dowling also won the 200.

“Really, things couldn’t have gone a whole lot better for us,” Watry said.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood took firsts in five events, including two relays. Brian Szutkowski won the 100 dash and Aaron Monnot won the triple jump.

The Witt-Birn girls won four events.

Micah Nier won the high jump and took second in the triple jump. She was also third in the 300 hurdles. Mikayla King won the 800. The Chargers also won the 4x400 and 4x100 relays.

For fourth-place Bonduel, Mallory Mews took second in the 3,200, Emily Sorenson was second in the long jump and Amber Heller placed second in the shot put.

Chargers win Bonduel golf meet

Tue, 05/20/2014 - 6:43pm
By:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School senior Ben Shoup putts during Monday’s meet at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil. Shoup finished fourth. Wittenberg-Birnamwood won the meet. Bonduel finished third.

Sneaking in a golf meet at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil before heavy rains Monday, Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School took first, Gresham second and Bonduel third.

The Chargers shot 358, Gresham 366 and Bonduel 371.

Ben Shoup, who placed fourth with an 85, led Bonduel. Zach Acker carded 87, Austin Krueger 97 and Brandon Wagester 102.

“We’re happy with third place,” Bonduel coach Dan Anderson said. “The guys played really well today. It’s our home course, so you sort of expect them to play a little better. This is a good way to finish out the regular season before the conference tournament and regionals.”

Anderson was impressed with the play of Krueger and Wagester.

“They’ve come on as of late,” Anderson said. “Brandon was hurt, he had a fractured leg. He was out until recently. I’m really happy to see him get out there and be able to play.

“Austin, it’s another good round for him. As a senior, you never really know what’s going to happen when you get out here. It’s a little bit more pressure than he’s used to, but he’s stepping up.”

Kyle Adamski shot 85, taking third by tiebreaker, to lead the Chargers. Maverick Bushman and Brant Linke both shot 90 and Gavin Czerwonka shot 93.

“They played really well,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Chris Bartletti said. “Kyle had his best round ever.”

Killian Eggert’s 77, good enough for second place, led Gresham. Kyle Miller shot 89, Cole Hoffman 105 and James Kazik 95.

Jared Sawall’s 86 led Marion, which placed eighth with a score of 458. Brian Knight shot 113, Brandon Schultz 125 and Emily Sawall 134.

Because the team only had two players, Menominee Indian did not participate in the team competition. John Long led the Eagles with a score of 107. Brandon Miller shot 110.

Hawks win 4x200 relays at Bay meet

Tue, 05/20/2014 - 5:43pm
By:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Kia Smurawa competes in the triple jump event at the Bay Conference track and field meet Saturday in Denmark. Smurawa took third.

The Shawano Community High School track and field teams won conference championships in two events at the Bay Conference meet Saturday in Denmark.

The Hawks finished fifth in the boys meet and eighth in the girls meet but won both the 4x200-meter relays. Seymour won the girls and boys titles.

“With the (low) numbers (on the team), we were not really going to be able to compete as a team,” Shawano coach Scott Smurawa said. “So our focus changed to looking to more individual efforts. We were able to do that with both the boys 4x200 and the girls 4x200.”

Malory Soper, Isabella Gonzalez, Kia Smurawa and Kristina Kurtz won the girls 4x200 with a time of 1:52.81. Carlos Merino, Dan Boivin, Jake Klister and Brice Bergner won the boys event with a time of 1:36.38.

“They’ve been working to improve steadily throughout the year,” Smurawa said. “They pulled it off in (the conference meet), which is what you’re looking for.”

Gonzalez also took second in the high jump. Kia Smurawa took third in both the long jump and triple jump, and placed fourth in the 100 dash.

Soper, Gonzalez, Kristina Kurtz and Lindsey Kurtz finished third in the 4x400 relay. Lindsey Kurtz took fourth in the 800 run.

Zeke Gueths took second in the discus, getting a personal best of 123-10.

“He’s been throwing pretty steady,” Smurawa said. “He’s been consistent throughout the season.”

Boivin cleared 13 feet in the pole vault to take second place.

“That was nice for him,” Smurawa said. “He’s been working steady in the offseason. He’s been hitting the 12-foot, 12-6 range pretty often. He improved a lot over the course of the year.”

Jake Klister took second in the 1,600-meter run.

Bergner (100 dash), Austin Lhotka (3,200 run) and Merino (long jump) all had fourth-place finishes.

Springborn gets 1st win of Speedway season

Mon, 05/19/2014 - 3:47pm
By:

By Scott Owen, Special to the Leader

Troy Springborn may have had the fastest car in the Late Model feature May 10 but had to settle for third. Saturday's race at Shawano Speedway was different as Springborn came from eighth place to take the checkered flag.

Marcus Yarie and Jason Jach also picked up their first wins of the season. Kyle Frederick and Scott Blanke made it two wins in a row on TL Kersten Excavating night at the races.

Late Models

Derek Jahnke rolled off from the pole position of the Late Model feature and into the lead at the start of the race. Josh Moesch and Todd Frank gave chase early on in the race. By lap five Frank began to receive pressure from Paul Parker and Nick Anvelink.

On lap six, Parker passed Frank on the outside, while Anvelink passed Frank on the inside to move into fourth. Parker quickly ran down Moesch and made a high side pass to take second. Jahnke continued to lead on lap seven, but Anvelink’s night was over as a mechanical failure sent him to the pits.

On lap nine, Parker again took to the outside line and took the lead from Jahnke. Springborn moved up to third. With Parker leading, Springborn ran down Jahnke to take second away on lap 11. Ron Berna and Mitch McGrath also joined the top five at this time. Springborn continued to reel in Parker as the laps wore on. The pair went side-by-side for the lead on lap 17 with Springborn coming out ahead.

Springborn would pull away at the end and pick up his first win of the year. The race went wire to wire without a caution flag.

IMCA Modified

Tom Schaal led the first two laps of the IMCA Modified feature before giving way to Yarie, who started in sixth place, on the third lap. Yarie began to pull away.

Last week’s feature winner, Jerry Wilinski, made his way into the second spot on lap 11, dropping Schaal to third. Yarie was untouchable for the rest of the race. Wilinski finished in second, Eddie Muenster took third. Jamie Schmidt started 11th and finished fourth.

The IMCA Modified feature also ran green to checkered without a yellow flag.

IMCA Stock Car

Rookie Trent Nolan moved from the outside row No. 1 into the lead on the opening lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature.

With Nolan continuing to lead, Mike Schmidt moved up to second on lap three. Nolan and Schmidt went side-by-side on lap five, with Nolan still hanging onto the lead.

On lap six, though, Schmidt would gain the upper hand and take the lead from Nolan. Schmidt was quickly joined by Frederick and Travis VanStraten in the top three. On lap eight Frederick took the top spot from Schmidt exiting turn two. VanStraten followed Frederick past Schmidt.

VanStraten continued to pester Frederick by staying right on his back bumper, but Frederick would not be denied his second win in as many weeks. VanStraten and Schmidt finished second and third for the second week in a row.

IMCA Sport Mod

Jach put last week’s misery behind him by leading the entire IMCA Sport Mod feature this week.

Last week he led the first 16 laps before an expired engine put him out of the race.

Jach may have led the entire race Saturday, but the action behind him was top notch. Jordan Bartz, Joey Taycher, Lucas Lamberies, Jordan Barkholtz and Brock Saunders all fought hard for a spot in the top five.

Taycher took the second position from Bartz on lap 16, and began to catch Jach over the final four laps. It was not enough, though, as Jach drove on to victory lane.

Bartz held on to finish third. Saunders made a last-lap pass on Lamberies to take fourth.

Mighty 4s

Dalton Nelson led early with Kasey Gross giving chase in the Mighty 4s feature.

Blanke, last week’s winner, raced to the lead on lap five of the race, with an inside pass in turn No. 2. Gross soon moved into second. Gross stayed with Blanke for the remaining laps of the race, but Blanke carried the momentum to win for the second week in a row.

Spectator Eliminators

Beau Schroeder celebrated his birthday with a V8 Spectator Eliminator victory. Brian Welch won the 4- and 6-cylinder eliminator race for the second week in a row.

Racing will continue at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Truckers too much for Hawks

Fri, 05/16/2014 - 11:05pm
By:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Clintonville High School senior Turner Doornink went 2 for 4 to lead the Truckers to a 12-0 win over Shawano on Friday at Memorial Park.

Fueled by an eight-run fourth inning, the Clintonville High School baseball team beat Shawano 12-0 in five innings of nonconference baseball Friday at Memorial Park.

The Truckers took the lead in the first inning when Parker Mindel hit a ground ball to score Hunter Vollmer. They extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning with a two-run error on a Aaron Morse ground ball and a RBI single by Vollmer.

Clintonville (8-6, 6-6 Eastern Valley) saved its knockout punch for the fourth inning, when Turner Doornink lead off with a double. A few batters later, the Truckers had loaded the bases on a base hit and walk, setting up back-to-back RBI singles by Jaden Doornink and Keyur Patel.

That prompted Shawano (4-12, 4-8 Bay) to switch from freshman pitcher Dylan Sumnicht to junior Brendan Cummings, but Morse immediately hit a two-run single. That was followed by a single by Vollmer to load the bases again. Damon Lorge walked to score another run, and a Shawano error allowed two more runs to get home.

Nicholas Hogen finished the scoring for Clintonville with a RBI single.

Shawano couldn’t get anything going before the end of the fifth inning.

“We’re a better ball team than what we showed,” Shawano coach Robert Wolff said. “It’s disappointing. When you get down, it’s hard to get back up. We took a punch and we didn’t get back up.”

The Hawks managed just three hits, as Mindel, a right-handed senior pitcher, earned the win. He walked one and struck out three, including two in the fifth to stifle any Shawano rally.

Wolff used the nonconference opportunity to give Sumnicht his first varsity start.

“I’m looking at the future,” Wolff said. “I wanted to see some of the underclassmen that are having success down there come up, pitch on the varsity and get some innings. You always have to look at the big picture. He did pretty well.”

Sumnicht struck out two, walked seven and allowed six runs on nine hits in 3 1-3 innings of work. Cummings pitched 1 2-3 innings of relief. He struck out one, walked one and allowed four hits and six runs.

Clint Dallas, Zach Sousek and Chase Henning each had hits for Shawano.

“The score, I don’t think, was accurate on how the game played out,” Clintonville coach Dean Muthig said. “They squared up the ball pretty darn good. They just hit it right at us. If a few of those balls were in the gap, we’re talking a different story.”

Doornink, a senior slugger who came into the game batting over .700 for the season, went 2 for 4 to lead Clintonville.

“He’s been pretty hot here,” Muthig said. “Pretty much anything he’s been hitting, he’s been hitting hard. And that’s with teams trying to pitch around him.”

“We got him to fly out once,” Wolff said. “We fooled him on a curve ball. When you have a good player like that, you just hope he makes a mistake when he’s hitting that well.”

Vollmer, a freshman hitting lead-off for Clintonville, had two hits and was walked twice.

“We brought him up here about four games into our season, and he’s done nothing but get on base,” Muthig said. “He doesn’t play like a freshman.”

Opening night magic

Fri, 05/16/2014 - 11:02pm
By:

Scott Owen, Leader Columnist

As opening nights go, this past Saturday’s tilt really had all one could ask for.

To start with, the weather was fantastic. Winter hung around way too long this year and truly wore out its welcome. Sunshine and mild temps were the perfect way to start the 52nd year of racing at the historic half mile.

Secondly, the racing action on the track was top notch. The night was filled with exciting side-by-side battles. Ron Berna, Jerry Wilinski, Kyle Frederick, Tracy Wassenberg and Scott Blanke all raced their figurative and collective tails off on their way to victory lane.

Thirdly, speaking of Blanke, the lifelong Shawano resident who grew up idolizing Illinois late model hot shoe Chic Stolarik, scored his first ever feature win at his home track.

Blanke, who began his racing career on ice with the Fire On Ice racing club before getting started on dirt in the old Hobby Stock division at the Shawano Speedway, is certainly a fan favorite. He has gained acclaim and legions of fans by winning demolition derbys, winning a championship with the Impact Survival Series for compact enduro racing and sporting a gigantic foam cowboy hat while putting on a show during the trailer race of destruction at the Shawano County Fair.

To make things more interesting Blanke won the race after being spun on the opening lap of the feature and sustaining damage to the rear of his car. He prevailed after a multi-lap, door-to-door battle with Joshua Slewinski.

Fourthly (if that is really a word), the Spectator Eliminators provided some great racing after the regular program.

Dave Stoffer and Brian Welch defeated the competition to earn the bragging rights, for now. If you’ve never seen Spectator Eliminators, imagine the drag racing scene from the classic movie “American Graffiti,” but make Bob Falfa, played by Harrison Ford pre-Han Solo days, and John Milner make two sharp, high-speed left-hand turns at the end of a slick quarter mile.

Fifthly (yup, I guess it is a word), the racing program was done early enough for the youngsters and oldsters alike to enter the pit area and get a chance to meet and greet their favorite drivers.

One of the greatest things about Saturday night short track racing is the interaction between races of fans and the characters who put on an amazing show every time out.

This right here is what turns so many kids into lifelong race fans. Well, that and the Sun Drop Slushies.

Thanks for reading. See you at the races.

Shawano gets No. 3 seed in softball tourney

Leader Staff

The Shawano Community High School softball team earned a No. 3 seed in Division 2, Bonduel earned a No. 2 seed in Division 3 and Tigerton earned a No. 1 seed in Division 4 as the WIAA released softball tournament brackets this week.

The seeds were determined by coaches at seeding meetings held throughout the state Wednesday.

The Hawks will open the tournament Thursday against No. 6 Seymour.

“We’re glad to have a home playoff game,” Shawano coach Kevin Isaacson said.

The Hawks swept Seymour in a doubleheader earlier this season, but Isaacson expects to see a better Thunder team Thursday.

If Shawano advances, it will face either No. 7 Clintonville or No. 2 Green Bay Notre Dame, which the Hawks beat in last year’s regional championship game. Those two teams will play in Green Bay on Thursday.

Also in Division 2, No. 6 Wittenberg-Birnamwood will open at No. 3 Antigo.

Division 3

Bonduel earned the No. 2 seed in its bracket, and will host No. 7 Wabeno/Laona on Thursday. No. 5 Menominee Indian travels to face No. 4 Crandon for the right to face No. 1 Oconto on May 27.

Division 4

The Tigers earned the top seed in its bracket and a bye. Tigerton will host on May 27 the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 5 White Lake and No. 4 Newman Catholic.

No. 2 Marion will face No. 7 Gresham on Thursday. No. 6 Bowler travels to face No. 3 Manawa. The winners of those games will face each other May 27.
