Hawks fall to Wrightstown at Shootout

Photo by Josh Thompson Shawano Community High School guard Zach Sousek (20) looks for a passing lane through the Wrightstown defense Friday at the Shawano Sundrop Shootout in Green Bay. Shawano lost to Wrightstown, 45-38.

When the Shawano Community High School boys basketball team needed some offense to get over the hump, it had a tough time producing points.

The Hawks trailed by as many as nine points against Wrightstown and, after tying the game in the third quarter, could never take the lead. The Hawks eventually fell 45-38 in the Shawano Sundrop Shootout on Friday at the Kress Events Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

“Our offense had some issues out of the gate,” Shawano coach Chris Kellett said. “Our starting five doesn’t have a knockdown shooter, which didn’t help circumstances. Take nothing away from Wrightstown, they got in our stuff and we just couldn’t handle it tonight.”

Shawano (6-2) was down 28-22 late in the third quarter before Kyle Raddant knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game going into the final eight minutes.

“It seemed like we were always clawing back and we finally tied it up in the second half, but it’s a struggle when we have to call a set every single time down the floor just to get a shot,” Kellett said.

Wrightstown (5-3) got some early shots to fall early in the fourth quarter and went 11-for-13 at the free throw line down the stretch to pull out the win. The Tigers were 17-for-23 from the line for the game.

Shawano had a tough time against Wrightstown’s big front line of Nathan Larson (6-foot-7) and Doug Fabry (6-6). The duo combined for 33 points, with Fabry scoring a game-high 16 points, including 10 in the second quarter.

“We were able to get some touches early down low and get some of their big guys in foul trouble, which was pretty big,” Wrightstown coach Cory Haese said.

Playing against two big bodies like Larson and Fabry was a test for his team, Kellett said.

“I think it was a great test for us in the fact that West De Pere has bodies of the similar size,” Kellett said. “West De Pere’s players are a little bit more talented than Wrightstown, so we’ve got our work cut out for ourselves.”

The Hawks had a rough shooting night, hitting just 12 of 38 shots (31.6 percent), while the Tigers were 12 of 39.

Shawano trailed 10-1 and didn’t hit its first field goal of the night until Sajen Knueppel scored at the 1:42 mark of the first quarter. Wrightstown had a 16-9 lead in the second quarter and a 20-14 cushion at halftime.

“It was really a struggle scoring for both teams,” Haese said. “We really struggled offensively, getting looks or finishing because they just make it tough. Shawano does a good job of packing that lane and making it tough for you.”

Shawano came out of the break and went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 20. After the Hawks tied it again at 28, Wrightstown went on a 12-4 spurt to all but end the game.

Knueppel led the Hawks in scoring with 11 points, and Raddant added eight. Two of Shawano’s top scorers — Zach Sousek, four points, and Will Cox, two points — were held in check.

Clintonville wrestler records 100th win

Thu, 12/26/2013 - 11:58am
Reiter's goal is to return to state By:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Clintonville High School senior Jacob Reiter wrestles teammate Charlie Poppe during practice Dec. 18 at Clintonville High School. Reiter earned his 100th career win earlier this season.

Jake Reiter may have hit a major milestone last week, getting his 100th career win, but the Clintonville High School senior says the wins are not as important to him as the losses.

“I don’t really look back on the matches I won,” said Reiter, who wrestles at 195 pounds. “I look back on the matches I lost and try to learn, get the most out of them.”

Reiter, who finished fifth at the WIAA state tournament last season and is a three-time sectional qualifier, was still excited to reach a mark only a few Truckers wrestlers have notched.

“It was pretty exciting. … It felt pretty good to get the 100th win finally,” Reiter said.

His coach said the secret of Reiter’s success is in the time he puts into the sport.

“Definitely his work ethic is amazing,” coach Justin Mc Auly said. “In the last 10 years, we haven’t had a whole lot of 100-win wrestlers. It’s quite an accomplishment for us.

“Jake, the time that he puts in on the mat, the time in the summer, the summer reps he gets in, it’s above everyone else and it is starting to show.”

Reiter’s 100th win came Dec. 14 at the Winnebago Lutheran Academy Invitational against Oostburg’s Jordan Blok, who is ranked as an honorable mention in Division 3 by Wisconsin Wrestling Online.

Blok isn’t the only ranked opponent Reiter, who is ranked No. 3 in Division 2, has dispatched this season. He also beat Racine Case’s Larry Harleston, ranked No. 5 in Division 1, earlier this season.

“Those are two tests that were good for him early on this year and he came out on top,” Mc Auly said. “He came out on top, so that was a good confidence-booster this season.”

Reiter is 15-1 on the season and finished third at the Shawano Holiday Classic wrestling tournament Saturday in Shawano.

Aside from improving his technique by wrestling a lot over the summer, Reiter also said his conditioning has improved from running cross-country in the fall.

All that work has gone toward his goal of reaching state again and improving on his top-five finish.

“Get down to state is my first goal,” Reiter said. “Mainly, place at the top.”

The Truckers only have nine wrestlers on the team, but the coach said the team doesn’t lack quality.

“We’re not abundant in numbers, but there’s kids I trust out on the mat every week,” Mc Auly said.

Reiter said he has been impressed with 182-pound wrestler Charlie Poppe and 145-pounder Tim Jerabek.

“It’s a small team, but there’s a lot of potential,” Reiter said. “Working with the guys this year, they all seem to have a different attitude this year. Everybody wants to get down there (to state) now.”

Turnovers hurt Bears in loss to Oconto

Wed, 12/25/2013 - 9:26am
By:

Tom Beschta, Leader Correspondent

Oconto survived Bonduel’s quick start and then cashed in from the free-throw line in the final quarter to escape with a 71-64 nonconference win Monday at Bonduel High School.

The Bears also had trouble controlling Oconto’s 6-foot-5 senior center, Conner Moe, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 19 rebounds.

“We are not playing good enough defense, we are not taking care of the ball and we are not shooting well,” Bonduel coach Duke Copp said. “We have to get better.”

Bonduel (4-5, 1-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) took advantage of a fast-paced first quarter, capitalizing on Oconto turnovers created by a full-court press to end the quarter with a 17-16 lead.

Senior Corey Herbert’s two 3-point plays and a 3-pointer by Tanner Pillsbury late in the quarter enabled Oconto (6-3, 3-3 Packerland Conference) to keep pace with Bonduel, which also had several turnovers, in the opening period. After the Blue Devils took the lead in the second quarter, they held onto it the rest of the night.

Oconto coach Jon Bostedt said the Blue Devils expected a tough first quarter.

“It’s a tough place to play,” Bostedt said. “So I said if we can just withstand the wave, and not let it get out of control, we can come out and match their energy and just be in the game.”

Pillsbury drained two more 3-pointers — he had four in the game — as the Blue Devils built a 33-24 halftime advantage.

“We stopped making shots and we started turning the ball over and let them score,” Copp said. “The kid (Pillsbury) hit a few 3s and that was tough.”

Moe had four quick boards early in the third quarter that led to Blue Devil scores as they built a 47-37 edge.

Bonduel rallied for 27 fourth-quarter points, pulling to within four after guards Colton Dobratz hit a 3-pointer and Hunter VanDerLinden created a 3-point play off a steal.

Oconto, however, was clutch at the free-throw line, making 23 of 32 for the game, including 13 of 17 by Herbert, who finished with 17 points. Pillsbury was also in double figures with 18 points.

Top scorers for Bonduel were Trevor Pedersen with 17, VanDerLinden with 15, Dobratz with 12, and Zernicke with 11.

Chargers win Shawano Holiday Classic

Wed, 12/25/2013 - 9:24am

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photos by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School senior Jacob Wudtke, top, wrestles Wittenberg-Birnamwood freshman Alex Peplinski in the 170-pound championship match Saturday at the Shawano Holiday Classic. Wudtke won a 3-0 decision.

It came down to just six points, but the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestling team edged Coleman for the Shawano Holiday Classic title Saturday.

“The boys are stepping up,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Troy Ostrowski said. “Every week it is about getting better.”

Bonduel finished third in the 12-team tournament. Other area schools competing were Clintonville, which finished eighth, and Shawano, which finished last.

Bonduel coach Chris Rank was happy with how his wrestlers performed.

“Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Coleman have great teams,” Rank said. “We get out of here in third. Right up and down the line there’s only one or two matches today that I can look back and say, ‘Geez maybe we could have won that one.’”

Senior Jacob Wudtke (14-0), who is ranked No. 4 in Division 3 by Wisconsin Wrestling Online, won Bonduel’s only championship on the day, taking the 170-pound weight class with a 3-0 decision over Wittenberg-Birnamwood freshman Alex Peplinski.

“It ended up being a great match in our favor,” Rank said. “Wittenberg-Birnamwood has a great team along with a great freshman there. He’s going to have a great career.”

The two wrestlers went scoreless through the first two periods, but Wudtke managed a near fall before the end of the third period and then rode it out to the end to take the win.

“Coaching Jacob over the years, I know he’s a confident young man,” Rank said. “I felt he was going to be OK. I felt he could at least ride him out, didn’t know that he was going to put him on his back.”

Bonduel’s Garrett Siolka (13-1) suffered his first loss of the season in the 120-pound championship match, a 10-4 decision to Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Ben Vosters.

Bonduel’s Dan Tauchen (13-2) lost the championship match at 152 pounds, getting pinned in 1:10 by Coleman’s Trevor Seewald.

Both Wittenberg-Birnamwood, ranked No. 5 in Division 2, and Coleman, ranked No. 2 in Division 3, had five champions.

In addition Vosters’ title, Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Braxton Potrykus (19-1), ranked No. 2 in Division 2, pinned Coleman’s Dextor Karban, who is ranked No. 2 in Division 3, in 3:13 to win the 160-pound bracket. Stetson Potrykus (18-1) won the 106-pound championship by beating Oconto’s Aiden Wusterbarth in a 8-2 decision. Hunter Kreger (17-2) beat Rhinelander’s Adam Woebbeking, 3-2, to take the 182-pound championship. August Peplinski (17-3) won the 195-pound championship with a pin of Berlin’s David Meza in 45 seconds.

Also for W-B, Bobby Uttecht (18-2) lost to Coleman’s Marc Lansin in a marathon championship match at 132 pounds. Knotted at 0-0 after four periods, Lansin scored a near fall in the final period to get the 3-0 decision.

Heavyweight Jayce Hinkfuss (12-6) put in the best performance for Shawano on the day. Hinkfuss placed fifth, winning the fifth-place match by pinning Berlin’s Zach Wilson in 1:34.

Two Clintonville wrestlers won their third-place matches: senior Jake Reiter (15-1), who pinned Bonduel’s Bennett Gunderson (9-6) in 1:10 at 195 pounds, and Charlie Poppe (15-3), who defeated Adams-Friendship’s Rylan Burrows 12-8, at 182. Tim Jerabek (11-7) won his first three matches at 145 pounds but then lost to Peshtigo’s D.J. Messenger and Lansin to finish third.

Tough defense and some solid shooting from sophomore Dustin Waupoose were not enough to lift the Menominee Indian High School boys basketball team over Almond-Bancroft in a 54-47 loss Friday in Keshena.

Almond-Bancroft (4-3, 4-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) built small leads throughout the game, only to see Menominee Indian (2-3, 2-3 CWC-10) come back off a key turnover or a big shot.

“I’m not a guy that’s high on moral victories, but I really feel like our team grew tonight,” Menominee Indian coach Brandon Frechette said. “They did a lot of good things. We’re a young team and they played well.”

Sophomore guard Dustin Waupoose had his share of those important shots after coming off the bench, hitting four baskets from beyond the 3-point arc on his way to a team-high 20 points.

Frechette was more impressed by what the sophomore guard did from inside the arc.

“Dustin is starting to understand that he can create offense without shooting the 3-pointer,” Frechette said. “If he keeps moving he can get open. He also did great on defense and rebounding.”

Waupoose also finished with five rebounds.

After Almond-Bancroft went on a 8-3 run to take a 34-28 lead in the third quarter, Menominee Indian responded in the fourth pulling to within two on a basket by junior Michael Pecore and a pair of Waupoose free throws.

With seven minutes to go, Pecore made a pair of free throws to tie the game, 34-34.

Both teams picked up the intensity from there, with Almond-Bancroft getting a 20-13 scoring advantage to close out the game and seal the victory.

Both teams struggled to score in the first half with Menominee Indian’s Alphonso Smith and Almond-Bancroft’s Ethan Yonke clogging up the middle.

Smith and Yonke finished with nine rebounds each. Yonke, held to just six points in the first half, piled up 17 in the second half.

Menominee Indian had 18 turnovers to Almond-Bancroft’s 15.

Austin Bunders added 12 points for Almond-Bancroft and had three assists.

Pecore finished the game with nine points and four assists. Sophomore Leon Nahwahquaw also had a pair of 3-pointers.

“Tonight, our boys grew a lot,” Frechette said. “We have a lot of confidence from tonight. Almond-Bancroft is a leading team in the conference for a reason.”

The Shawano Community High School boys swim team got a first-place finish in the final event to defeat Lakeland Union 88-82 Thursday in Shawano.

The Hawks led 80-76 heading into the 400-yard freestyle relay. Eight points would go to the winner, four to the runner-up and two to the third-place finisher.

After Shawano fell behind by about a half a second in the first two legs, junior Jake Klister built a lead against Lakeland Union junior Nate Kellner. The small lead was more than enough for junior Zach Soper, who finished about 4 seconds ahead of Nick Garcia.

Shawano finished in 3:37.49, Lakeland Union in 3:41.55.

“It’s exciting, the whole meet was exciting,” Shawano coach Walberto Colon said. “The kids were ready for it. You could see their eyes shining. They were just ready to race.”

Aware that the last event would decide the meet, Colon told his swimmers to concentrate on fundamentals.

“Everything is about fundamentals,” he said. “Have a good team effort, cheer each other on and be sure that everybody is pushing each other and helping each other out, working as a team. It’s not about the score.”

Soper also won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Griffin Rades, a freshman, won the 200 individual medley. Rolando Colon won the 500 freestyle, and Christian Kane won the 100 breaststroke. The Shawano 200 medley relay team of Rades, Kane, Soper and Klister won the event with a time of 1:50.94.

“Everybody stepped up,” Colon said. “The kids did well, and I say well because our kids want to win conference. That is their goal.”
