Photo by Troy A. Bruzewski Shawano Community High School junior Zach Soper competes in the 200-yard medley relay during the WIAA Division 2 state championships Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Natatorium. Soper won championships in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.
Shawano Community High School junior Zach Soper celebrated atop the podium twice Friday, winning both the 100-yard backstroke and 100 butterfly at the WIAA Division 2 state swim meet in Madison.
This was Soper’s third trip to the state meet, held at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium, in both events. As a freshman, he finished 11th in the butterfly and 13th in the backstroke. Last year, he was fourth in the butterfly and second in the backstroke.
“It feels really, really good,” Soper said. “It feels like all the work I put in really paid off. It just feels great, standing up on the podium in the first-place position.”
Soper won the 100-yard butterfly Friday in 52.24, a hair slower than his sectional-best time of 52.23, edging Shorewood sophomore Michael Perry (52.51) and Monona Grove senior Andrew Sackett (52.85).
He said, of the two events, he was more nervous about the butterfly.
“That was closer as far as the times,” Soper said. “I would say it was my harder event. It was great to get that one out of the way and get the first place.”
The race featured four of last year’s top five finishers. Soper got off to a very quick start, covering the first 50 yards in 24.26 and leading Sackett (24.64) at the midway point. Perry, who also placed second last year, finished strong, turning in the best second 50 (27.65) to overtake Sackett. Soper swam the second half in 27.78.
He saved his best for the backstroke, winning in a personal-best 50.79 — the fifth fastest time in state meet history.
“I felt really good. My legs and my arms, I was really relaxed,” Soper said. “I felt like I would do a good job.”
Soper and Beaver Dam senior Jan Hanson, who won the 100 freestyle title Friday, battled from start to finish, with Hanson clocking the first 50 in 25.21 and Soper in 25.25. But Soper took control on the second turn and was the only swimmer to finish the final 50 in under 26 seconds, clocking a 25.55 to Hanson’s 26.37.
Hanson finished second in 51:58 and Edgewood senior Payton tuDuits was third in 52.82.
“When I finished, for both races, I just looked up and I saw my mom and I just started smiling,” Soper said. “It just meant so much to me, having my mom and my sister and everybody there.”
Soper was the top seed in the event after winning the Stevens Point sectional in 51:06, more than two seconds better than any of the other 16 state finalists’ best times.
He did miss the podium in one event as Shawano’s 200-yard medley relay team placed 15th in 1:45.46. The squad included Soper, freshman Griffin Rades, junior Rolando Colon and junior Jake Klister. Edgewood won the event in 1:36.89.
The Hawks finished with 44 points, 18th of the 34 teams at the meet, which was won by Edgewood (294). Each of Soper’s victories was worth 20 points, and the relay team added four.
Soper’s performance was more than an individual triumph, however.
“It’s great for the school, it’s great for him and the swimming program in Shawano as a whole,” Shawano coach Walberto Colon said. “They were pretty exciting races. … He competed tough. It was a tough competition.”
Going into his senior season next year, in addition to his two state titles, Soper will be a three-time sectional champion in the backstroke and back-to-back sectional titlist in the butterfly.

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School forward Lindsey Kurtz tries to get around a Luxemburg-Casco defender during a Bay Conference game Friday in Shawano. Shawano lost, 43-40.
The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team played three solid quarters, but a lapse early in the second half Friday resulted in a 43-40 home loss to Luxemburg-Casco.
“We have to adjust and learn,” Shawano coach Ryan Koenig said. “One quarter is killing us. We’ve got to play four quarters.”
The Hawks (5-16, 4-10 Bay) had a nice start, holding their Bay Conference foe to four points in the first quarter and building a 21-13 halftime lead. But they were outscored 15-4 in the third quarter.
“We had the lead; that third quarter killed us,” Koenig said. “We played hard. The defensive effort, holding them to four points in the first quarter, all night our defensive intensity was good. There were just some mental lapses.”
Junior guard Sarah Kinnard, who had three points in the first half, sparked the Spartan offense with an early 3-pointer en route to 11 points in the third period.
The Hawks were able to hang around, though, and got to within one point, 37-36, with 2:30 left to play, spurred by the play of sophomore Sara Hokenstad and senior Lyndsey Kurtz.
Hokenstad scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter. Kurtz had seven rebounds and eight points in the game.
“We tried coming back and had some chances,” Koenig said. “The girls played hard.”
Down 42-38, sophomore Megan Klitzke made two free throws. The Hawks then fouled Jessica Liebeck, who missed both of her free-throw attempts, but an errant pass gave the ball back to the Spartans (6-14, 4-11).
Shawano then fouled Lexi Kinnard with 7.2 seconds left in the game. Lexi Kinnard made her second free throw to seal the win.
Sarah Kinnard led Luxemburg-Casco with 20 points.
Klitzke finished with nine points. Kayla Hokenstad had seven rebounds for the Hawks.

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]
Contributed Photo Tigerton High School softball coach Glenda Smith, middle, joins former Milton softball coach Don Vruwink, left, and former Beloit Memorial softball coach John Schroeder as the 2014 Hall of Fame class during the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association’s induction banquet Feb. 8 in Wisconsin Dells.
Glenda Smith, Tigerton High School’s varsity softball coach for the last 23 years, isn’t done coaching yet. That’s why she was kind of shocked at the news.
Smith recently was selected to the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame.
“I had no idea,” Smith said. “When they called, I was like, why me? I’m still coaching, and you think about the hall of fame years later.”
What the WFSCA saw was Smith’s long list of accomplishments. Her record is 378-109, and she has coached Tigerton to eight Central Wisconsin Conference-10 titles and three state tournaments, including a runner-up finish in 2012 and a state championship in 2010. Both of those teams earned the WIAA/Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship award.
Smith has also been a senior all-star coach three times, the National Federation of State High School Associations’ state coach of the year in 2010 and a member of the WIAA coaches advisory committee for three years.
“I’m very honored, and humbled to be chosen with all the outstanding coaches there are in the state of Wisconsin,” Smith said.
Smith, former Milton softball coach Don Vruwink and former Beloit Memorial softball coach John Schroeder were the sixth class inducted into the hall of fame, which has 22 members. They were honored at a banquet Feb. 8 in Wisconsin Dells.
“It was pretty neat,” Smith said. “The whole thing was just something I’ll never forget. I had quite a few family members from Kewaunee and some very good friends from Tigerton there. It was all good.”
Smith said her athletes and the tight-knit community of Tigerton share the honor with her.
“All the kids I’ve coached in the past should look at this and say they were a part of it,” Smith said. “Everybody asks what is the best team you’ve coached and, definitely, the state years stick out, but I’ve had the honor to coach a lot of excellent athletes in the Tigerton area. I’ve had over the years some kids who really worked hard for me.”
Smith, who has coached volleyball the last 31 years and has been Tigerton’s athletic director the last 14, said she found Tigerton to be a special place.
“When I first came to Tigerton, it was to get some experience and move on,” Smith said. “But I’ve made some very good friends there and they’ve always been supportive, the community, the parents, I can’t tell you.”
Smith said, as a coach, she has tried to get her athletes as involved as possible and to make sure they are enjoying themselves.
“Being in a small district, I always hope the kids are participating in as many activities as they can,” Smith said. “I don’t want anybody emphasizing on one or two sports. Go out there, have fun and enjoy every season and not just one or two.”
With softball practices set to begin in less than a month, Smith said being a hall-of-famer won’t change her approach.
“It’s an honor, but when it comes down to the beginning of the season, it’s going to be same-old, same-old,” she said.

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]
The Gresham Community High School boys basketball team handily beat Tigerton 61-37 Thursday in Tigerton, a prequel to their WIAA Division 5 regional game Tuesday night in Gresham.
Gresham (16-6, 13-5 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) jumped out to a 19-10 lead, led 28-16 by halftime and finished off the game by outscoring the Tigers (4-18, 3-15 CWC-10) 17-8 in the fourth quarter.
Scott Cerveny, a senior guard, led the Wildcats with 22 points, six rebounds and four assists.
“He really drove the ball well,” Gresham coach Jeff Zobeck said. “Lately — I think he would say the same thing — he’s maybe been settling a little bit for 3s. Actually, over the last few games he’s been the bright spot of perimeter shooting for us. Tonight he looked for opportunities to get into the basket and crashed the boards hard.”
Christian Haffner, a junior guard, added 17 points and four assists. James Kazik scored six points and led the team with seven rebounds.
Woodrow Nelson led Tigerton with 12 points. Tyler Marquardt added 10.
Gresham has been working on its defense of late, and Zobeck said he started to see it come together Thursday.
“We haven’t really been digging in recently on the defensive end the way we wanted to,” Zobeck said. “We made that a point of emphasis tonight. We really wanted to get out and defend. For the most part we showed some improvement.”
The Wildcats beat Tigerton 75-47 earlier in the season.
Gresham is the No. 2 seed in the regional; Tigerton is No. 7. The winner will play either No. 3 Wisconsin Valley Lutheran (10-11) or No. 6 Bowler (5-16, 3-14 CWC-10).
Gresham swept Bowler in both conference games this season but lost 54-52 to Wisconsin Valley Lutheran in a nonconference game on the road Feb. 4.
The tourney matchup didn’t play into Thursday’s strategy, Zobeck said.
“What we did the first time is what we tried tonight,” he said. “Going into tournament play, there’s some things I have in my mind that we might spring on them, but for the most part, what we did tonight is what we have to do again on Tuesday.”

Shawano Community High School junior Zach Soper earned a third trip to the state swim meet with first-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke Saturday at the WIAA Division 2 sectional in Stevens Point.
“We had around 12 personal-best times at the meet and we established three Shawano records,” Shawano coach Walberto Colon. “They were honoring themselves, their team and their school. They did their very best. They performed very well.”
Soper swam away from the competition in the backstroke, finishing in 51:05, more than six seconds better than runner-up Aaron Stange (57.47) of Ashwaubenon.
Soper took the butterfly in 52.23 seconds. Wausau East senior Garrett Richetto (53.69) finished second.
Soper set Shawano records in both his individual events and helped the 200-yard medley relay team, which also included freshman Griffin Rades, junior Rolando Colon and junior Jake Klister, set a school record in that event. Shawano took second place, finishing in 1:44.89, behind Ashwaubenon (1:42.56).
“Did you see the time? They dropped 5 seconds from their seed time,” Walberto Colon said. “So they performed pretty well.”
The Hawks’ time was also good enough to earn them a trip to Madison.
Ashwaubenon won the sectional with 389 points, followed by Rice Lake (224) and River Falls (206). Shawano finished fifth (197).
Other Shawano results: 400 freestyle relay (Klister, Rades, Colon, Soper), fourth; Klister, sixth, 100 freestyle, and seventh, 50 freestyle; Rades, sixth, 500 freestyle, and eighth, 100 backstroke; Rolando Colon, ninth, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle; Christian Kane, ninth, 100 breaststroke; 200 freestyle relay (Craig Kraning, Easter Kyle, Nathan Kane, Christian Kane), 1oth; Alex Retzlaff, 14th, 100 butterfly, and 17th, 100 breaststroke; Nathan Kane, 18th, 500 freestyle, and 19th, 200 freestyle; Kraning, 22nd, 50 free; and Cayman Kunschke, 22nd, 100 breaststroke.

The Bonduel High School girls basketball team tried to make it two thrilling comebacks in a row, but stalled down the stretch Friday in a 52-40 loss to Oconto Falls at home.
The Bears (14-4, 9-2 Central Wisconsin Conference-8), who beat CWC-8 rival Wittenberg-Birnamwood in dramatic fashion Thursday, trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half, but caught up to Oconto Falls (15-2, 10-2 Bay) in the third quarter.
With Bonduel trailing 38-36 to start the fourth quarter, Taylor Weier, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, tied the game at 38-38 and again at 40-40 with just under 6 minutes left to play.
A pair of baskets by Oconto Falls, one by star McKenna Larsen and another by Elizabeth Watzka, gave the Panthers a four-point lead.
Bonduel went scoreless the rest of the way, while Oconto Falls hit six of 10 shots at the free-throw line and senior Carly Lemke added another basket.
“Yesterday, they were so high, and tonight, they’re so disappointed,” Bonduel coach Missy Dowden said. “They have to hold their chins up. We came out flat. We decided to pick up the defense in the second half … and away we went.”
The Panthers opened the game with a 15-3 run.
“They came out in man (defense),” Oconto Falls coach Mike Kaczmarek said. “That kind of surprised us. We thought they’d play zone.”
Bonduel stayed in the game with a string of five 3-pointers in the first half and had eight in the game. Jennifer Dowden, a 6-0 junior forward who led the team with 19 points, scored three. Deanna Zernicke provided three more and finished with nine points. Alexa Reinke added two more, along with five rebounds and four blocks.
“What they have, and we don’t even have this in the Bay Conference, is their length,” Kaczmarek said. “Their zone, with Reinke and Dowden, we’re not used to that length.
“It was a well-played high school basketball game. Bonduel has a very nice team.”
Larsen led Oconto Falls, scoring 16 of her 25 points in the first half. Watzka added 10.
“We did much better in the second half on her,” Missy Dowden said. “I didn’t think they believed me when I said if she touches the ball she’s going to shoot. To me, we don’t have a player in our conference that if they touch it, it’s going to go in.”
The Bears are in the middle of a decisive stretch, playing Amherst on Monday. Bonduel, Amherst and Wittenberg-Birnamwood are in a close race atop the CWC-8 standings.
“We lost, but it was a good game for us,” Missy Dowden said. “Two games in a row, we get a day off here and then we come right back with Amherst. It’s a good situation for us going into the playoffs.”
The undefeated Bonduel junior varsity team extended its winning streak to 17, beating Oconto Falls 47-25. Kailee Pedersen and Emily Sorenson scored 12 points each.
