The Shawano Community High School volleyball team advanced to the WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal Tuesday after beating No. 5 Clintonville 3-1.

The Hawks next will play at No. 1 Green Bay Notre Dame (32-5, 10-1 Fox River Classic Conference) on Thursday.

For No. 4 Shawano (14-15, 2-7 Bay Conference), getting past the Truckers (9-21, 2-6 Eastern Valley) was anything but easy.

“Clintonville brought it tonight,” Shawano coach Jessica Cumberland said. “It was a fight to the end. I really reinforced that were coming in as a team, and we’re leaving as a team.

It appeared the Hawks would roll in the first set, jumping out to a 11-4 lead before winning, 25-16.

Clintonville upped the pressure in the second game, going up 8-4, and maintaining a small lead until Shawano rallied to tie it at 22-22. The Truckers went on to win 25-23.

“Our girls came out and played well,” Clintonville coach Lance Bagstad said.

The third game stayed whisker-close throughout. Clintonville appeared to have control, up 24-22, but Ericka Dunnam, a junior middle hitter, hit a spike to tie it for Shawano.

“Their big hitter in the middle, running quicks like they run, we just didn’t defense that well,” Bagstad said. “Especially the first set. In the last three sets I thought we defensed it a little better.”

The Hawks took the lead when Clintonville was called for a double-hit. Dunnam then hit the game-winner to give Shawano a 2-1 lead.

Neither team took more than a three-point lead in the fourth game until Shawano scored the final four points of the match to win 25-20.

“We struggled at the service line tonight,” Bagstad said. “We haven’t struggled with that all year. Where that came from tonight, I’m not sure.”

Dunnam finished with 17 kills, six blocks and 11 digs. Senior Tori Wiskow had 10 kills, six blocks. Junior setter Annelies Young had 32 assists. Senior Courtney Vomastic had five kills and six digs.

No statistics were available from Clintonville.

“I don’t really have a lot to say about Notre Dame,” Cumberland said. “I know that we’re going to have to step it up a notch. Our girls are ready to bring it. We’re going to do what we need to do, fight until the end. We’re going to play ball.”

Bears blast Manawa to end regular season

Fri, 10/17/2014 - 11:31pm
Berry scores four touchdowns in 49-13 victoryBy:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Hunter Berry scored four times, and the Bonduel High School football team knocked Central Wisconsin Conference-8 foe Manawa from the playoffs in a 49-13 win Friday in Bonduel.

“We were a little nervous,” Bonduel offensive coordinator Dave LaBerge said. “We knew they had to win to get into the playoffs.”

After a Dan Tauchen touchdown put the Bears (7-2, 5-2 CWC-8) up 7-0, Berry scored the next four, three rushing and one receiving, as Manawa’s defense focused on stopping Hunter VanDerLinden.

“(Manawa) really did a nice job. They tried to take Hunter VanDerLinden out of the game,” LaBerge said. “Once we started using our other backs, our other weapons, things really started opening up for us.”

Berry finished with five carries for 155 yards. He also had an interception.

“Hunter Berry doesn’t get a ton of carries, but when he does, he sure makes the most of them,” LaBerge said. “He averages over 10 yards a carry on the year. After tonight he’s probably up to more.”

VanDerLinden had 17 rushes for 66 yards and a touchdown. Tauchen finished with 11 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Colton Dobratz was 4 for 8 for 68 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

The Bears’ defense limited Manawa running back Adam Langman to 89 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Brandon Rohloff was 8 of 19 for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Bonduel, which qualified for the WIAA playoffs last week, will learn its seed and opponent at the seeding meeting Saturday. The Bears could be in line to host a playoff game Friday.

Hawks fall in regular season finale

TD on fake punt among Shawano highlightsBy:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School sophomore Jack Hanauer (10) looks for a receiver during Friday’s Bay Conference football game against Denmark. Shawano lost, 48-21.

The Shawano Community High School football team reached for every trick in the playbook to try to spoil Bay Conference foe Denmark’s playoff bid.

Despite some highlight plays, Shawano lost 48-21, wrapping up conference play 2-6, 3-6 overall.

“The kids played hard,” Shawano coach Al Tomow said. “The effort is never questioned. It’s just the same things that hurt us all year: a missed assignment here, being out of position on another play. Those things start to snowball.”

After giving up a 66-yard touchdown to quarterback Jonathan Deprey, Shawano appeared to stall on the ensuing drive. Punter Zack Sousek, a 5-foot-10 senior triple threat, had other plans. Running straight up the middle on a fourth-down fake punt, Sousek ended up in the end zone 65 yards later.

Denmark (5-4, 4-4 Bay) took back the lead on the ensuing drive with a 13-yard pass from Deprey to Klein Vogel.

Shawano sophomore quarterback Jack Hanauer (6-0, 160) found junior receiver Adam Bartz (6-1, 175) for a 24-yard touchdown to open the second quarter. A missed extra-point try left the Vikings with a 14-13 lead.

From there Denmark pulled away. Deprey pulled off a fake punt conversion of his own, then hit Marcus Pribyl for a 24-yard touchdown to go ahead 21-13.

After a Hanauer interception, Deprey ran 43-yards for another score, and the Vikings were up 27-13.

Shawano almost scored before halftime, busting out a hook-and-ladder play on pass from Hanauer to Bartz, who pitched it to Sousek, who made it to the 10-yard line before being pushed out of bounds as time expired.

“We wanted the kids to have fun,” Tomow said. “We had some gadget plays in all year and never really had the chance to run them. We had a fake punt option on every punt. We ran the hook-and-ladder before halftime, which if they don’t put a third safety back, we might take it to the house.”

Deprey and Matt VandenHeuvel added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the third quarter.

Late in the third quarter, after recovering a fumble in Denmark territory, a pass interference call set the Hawks up at the Denmark 5-yard line, but a fumble on an outside run was scooped up by Denmark’s Noah Brunner, who returned it for a 95-yard touchdown.

In the fourth quarter, Hanauer connected with Sousek on a 44-yard touchdown, and the Hawks made the 2-point conversion on a direct snap to Cole Huntington, who ran it in and cut Denmark’s lead to 48-21.

Sousek had two catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. He rushed four times for 69 yards and a touchdown. Hanauer was 7 of 13 for 144 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Bartz finished with four catches for 56 yards.

Deprey had nine rushes for 139 yards and three touchdowns. He was 2 for 4 passing for 40 yards and a touchdown. VandenHeuvel had 19 carries for 92 yards.

Shawano had hoped to take the step Denmark took this season, becoming eligible for the playoffs with Friday’s win. While the Hawks will have to wait another season to make a return to the playoffs, Tomow is convinced the program is moving in the right direction.

“We knew Denmark was going to be tough,” Tomow said. “We knew that if they won they’d be in the playoffs. So we emphasized playing really hard one more time for the seniors, for the commitment and sacrifices they made for the program.”

Shawano had 10 seniors on the roster Friday: Huntington, Sousek, Henning, Braden Mueller, Grant Wainio, Dalton Parson, Mason Boogren, Dylan Hintz, Brendan Cummings, Jayce Hinkfuss and Noah Bell.

Shawano will play an exhibition game Thursday against Wausau East, but the seniors will not participate so the coaches can see younger players for next year.

“With what these seniors put in the last few years, I think they put in a nice foundation,” Tomow said. “They should be proud of what they accomplished. We’re definitely proud of what they brought to our program.”

Klister wins Bay championship

SCHS boys cross-country team finishes 2ndBy:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Jake Klister runs the final stretch of Thursday’s Bay Conference boys cross-country race. Klister took first, becoming the school’s first conference champion in cross-country since 2008.

Jake Klister couldn’t help taking a peek.

The Shawano Community High School senior was looking for Oconto Falls senior Mike Friedman as the two ran the last stretch of the Bay Conference boys varsity cross-country race Thursday.

Friedman, who had led the first half of the race and was Klister’s primary competition for the Bay Conference championship, was far enough behind for Klister to realize he had it.

“I looked over my shoulder quick to get a peek and saw the distance,” Klister said. “I couldn’t believe what was happening.”

Continuing to run, Klister looked to the sky and did a sign of the cross before crossing the finish line in 16 minutes, 51 seconds. Friedman finished six seconds behind Klister for second place.

“Words can’t describe it,” Klister said. “I just went out comfortably after the first mile, saw that Friedman was pulling away, and some voice in my head said, ‘Not today, not after three years of him beating me.’”

Heading into the race at Mid Vallee Golf Course in De Pere, Shawano coach Steve Stomberg told Klister that if he stuck with Friedman, he’d have a chance to outkick him at the end.

“I caught up to him after the 700 (meter mark),” Klister said. “I challenged him for a little bit. I surged and he didn’t come with me. I took it from there.”

Klister is Shawano’s first cross-country conference champion since Chris Culhane in 2007.

“We’ve talked about what he has to do to be at the top,” Stomberg said. “He’s worked hard all four years of high school for me. He’s had the goal to be the best that he can be, and he’s wanted to prove it. When it comes to hard work, dedication and stuff like that, he’s done a fantastic job.”

Klister helped the boys team finish second at the meet with a team score of 60, behind Oconto Falls (47), which won its fourth consecutive Bay championship.

Rounding out the Shawano scoring were junior Austin Lhotka, who finished fourth with a time of 17:13, followed by Andrew Cardish (10th, 17:35), Chase Lhotka (20th, 18:08) and Chandlar Fairbairn (25th, 18:26).

“It was a good race today,” Stomberg said. “I’m very proud of all of our guys. We have to look at what Oconto Falls has. They’re senior loaded with some outstanding runners who have put a lot of time and dedication into their program.”

Junior Teagan Monfils finished 12th in 21:03 to lead the Shawano girls, who took eighth with a team score of 198.

“She had that little injury,” Stomberg said. “That set her back about three weeks. She wasn’t running very well. She knew what she wanted to do and tried to give it her all.

“I was proud of her for coming back, and how she finished for us today,” Stomberg said.

SCHS junior Kristy Kurtz was 23rd, finishing in 21:52. She was followed by Sophia Holstrum (50th, 23:16), Savannah Johnson (56th, 23:37) and Elena Bohm (57th, 23:39).

“Our girls are young,” Stomberg said. “We have some outstanding girls and some outstanding boys coming up.”

Luxemburg-Casco (34) won the girls race, followed by West De Pere (60) and Marinette (121).

Pacelli bounces Wildcats from tourney

First-half deficit too much for Gresham/BowlerBy:

Leader Staff

The Gresham/Bowler high school boys soccer team’s season came to an end Thursday with a 4-2 loss to Stevens Point Pacelli in the WIAA Division 4 regional final in Stevens Point.

The Wildcats had trouble adjusting to playing a night game and could not overcome Pacelli’s first-half momentum.

“The boys got caught a little off guard playing a night game,” Gresham/Bowler coach Nate Boucher said. “It’s something we’re not used to.”

The Gresham Community High School soccer field does not have lights, and it was only the second game all season the Wildcats played at night.

Pacelli took a 3-0 lead by the halfway mark, getting a pair of goals from Joe Fuller and another from Luke Yenter.

“When we got down 3-0, they definitely had the momentum,” Boucher said. “It was just an uphill battle. It was too hard to climb out of.”

Senior Drew Payne, who led the Wildcats in scoring this season, got Gresham/Bowler on the scoreboard in the second half with an assist by senior Christian Haffner.

After Yenter made it a 4-1 match with another goal, Omar Carrera scored for Gresham/Bowler on an assist from Payne.

Sophomore Neal Cerveny had 10 saves in the Gresham/Bowler goal.

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School junior Hayley Pues hits a ball during Saturday’s Central Wisconsin Conference-8 pool play match against Amherst in Bonduel. Bonduel was 1-2 and took third place in pool play.

The Bonduel High School volleyball team swept Iola-Scandinavia in three games in Tuesday’s Central Wisconsin Conference-8 tournament game to make up for a poor performance in Saturday’s pool play.

Bonduel (6-2 CWC) won 25-22, 26-24, 25-18 Tuesday thanks to changes on offense and a good effort by junior Hayley Pues.

“We mixed up our offense a little bit,” Bonduel coach Kim Bodoh said. “That seemed to be the spark the ladies needed to play to the best of their ability.”

Senior Jen Dowden led the Bears with 13 kills and six blocks. Senior Lexi Reinke added 11 kills and 23 digs. Junior setter Miranda Schmidt had 34 assist.

Perhaps the biggest impact, though, came from Pues, who had nine kills.

“I had been subbing back and forth between two different middles,” Bodoh said. “Hayley Pues, she just came alive tonight and really helped us a lot tonight. Her presence in the middle really helped a lot when Jenny wasn’t in the front row.”

Bonduel was in second place heading into the pool play on Saturday but finished a disappointing third. The final conference standings, which are based on a point system, were not available by the Leader’s press time Tuesday.

The Bears opened the tournament Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Shiocton (1-6), 25-18, 23-25, 23-25. In the second round, Bonduel beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 25-20, 25-21.

In the third round, the Bears fell to Amherst in three games (25-13, 15-25, 20-25).

“After Saturday’s big disappointment of a day, they practiced hard yesterday (Monday) and knew they had to take care of business,” Bodoh said.

Dowden led Bonduel with 32 kills and 44 digs on Saturday. Schmidt had 38 assists. Reinke had 36 digs and 20 kills. Taylor Weier had 18 kills and five aces.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood also rebounded for a disappointing pool play effort with a win Tuesday.

After a fourth-place finish Saturday, Wittenberg-Birnamwood (6-2) beat Manawa in three games Tuesday (25-12, 25-23, 26-15).

“Tonight, we had a well-balanced attack,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Chris Nier said. “It makes a big impact when multiple girls are successfully attacking the ball. Our libero, Mikayla King, had a great night playing defense, and especially with communication.”

Taylor Nier led the Chargers’ attack with 12 kills and four aces. Lauren Bushman had nine kills. Danica Wendler had seven kills and three aces. Hannah Buntrock had six kills.

On Saturday, Wittenberg-Birnamwood beat Amherst (26-24, 25-16) in the first round and lost to Shiocton (27-25, 9-25, 26-24) in the third round.

Amherst (1-6), which beat second-place Shiocton (20-25, 25-21, 25-20) in the second round, took first.

On the other side of the tournament, first-place Weyauwega-Fremont (7-0) took first in pool play. Stevens Point Pacelli (4-3) was second, followed by Iola-Scandinavia (4-3) and Manawa (1-6).

Port Edwards (5-4) took second at Wild Rose, followed by Tigerton (5-4), Gresham and Marion.

Wildcats unhappy with No. 4 seed in soccer tourney

Shawano seeded 6th in Division 2By:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Dan Boivin takes a shot on goal during a Bay Conference match against Menasha on Thursday night. Shawano earned a No. 6 seed in the WIAA Division 2 tournament.

Gresham/Bowler (15-3-3) earned a No. 4 seed in the WIAA Division 4 tournament, the highest seed of the area’s teams.

Gresham/Bowler coach Nate Boucher said his players thought they could have had a higher seed and are out to prove it.

“We definitely had the best record going into the (seeding) meeting,” Boucher said. “I guess other teams’ coaches felt different. So (the Gresham/Bowler players) just want to go out and prove to everyone that we should be coming out on top.”

The Wildcats have had a lot of success this season.

“Offensively, we’ve been very strong, put up a lot of goals,” Boucher said. “Our defense has been pretty solid all year long, after the first two games.”

Gresham/Bowler allowed 10 goals in the first two games but got stingy in a hurry.

“Since then, I think we’ve averaged about a half a goal a game,” Boucher said.

Sophomore goalkeeper Neal Cerveny has played well, and senior sweeper Christian Haffner has played a big role in solidifying the defense.

“Christian has been the backbone of the defense,” Boucher said.

The Wildcats have been led offensively by senior forward Drew Payne, who has 26 goals. Senior Kalen Fischer and freshman Drew Haffner have also been contributing up front.

The No. 4 seed gives the Wildcats a home game Tuesday against No. 5 Wautoma (5-8-3, 2-1-1 South Central).

Gresham/Bowler made it to the Division 4 regional final last season but lost 5-1 to Columbus Catholic.

The winner of Tuesday’s match will face either No. 1 Stevens Point Pacelli, last year’s regional champions, or No. 8 Northland Lutheran. They play on Tuesday night in Stevens Point.

Shawano (6-9-1, 5-3 Bay Conference) earned a sixth seed in the Division 2 regional. The Hawks will be on the road Tuesday against No. 3 Wausau East (10-3-5, 6-1-5 Wisconsin Valley Conference). East has yet to lose at home this season, but had two matches end in ties.

Shawano made it to the Division 2 regional final last season, but lost 2-1 to Marshfield.

Clintonville (6-6-2, 2-5 Eastern Valley) is the No. 5 seed in Division 3. The Truckers will open the tournament Tuesday on the road at No. 4 Medford ( 7-7-2, 4-5-1 Great Northern).

Bonduel becomes eligible for playoffs

Sat, 10/11/2014 - 9:30am
Bears dominate Pacelli, 49-0By:

Leader Staff

The Bonduel High School football team got it done through the air, on the ground and on defense in a 49-0 drubbing of Stevens Point Pacelli on the road Friday.

The win got the Bears (6-2, 4-2 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) to the magical number for playoff eligibility. To qualify for playoff consideration, a team must win at least half of its conference games.

“We just needed to get this win to get into the playoffs,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said. “That was nice to get that done and taken care of.”

Although the Bears scored on their first possession on Hunter VanDerLinden’s 1-yard dive, Bonduel struggled to get going offensively in the first quarter.

Leading 7-0 in the second quarter, and with Pacelli loading the box to stop Bonduel’s rushing attack, the Bears went to the air. Quarterback Colton Dobratz connected with Dan Tauchen on a 44-yard touchdown to put the Bears up 14-0. He later connected with receiver Connor Rosin for a 40-yard touchdown pass.

“If they are going to have that many people in the box, you have to take advantage of it,” Westrich said. “We missed a couple early, and then Colton got on and made some good passes, and we made them pay for loading the box up.”

The rout was on when running back Hunter Berry found daylight on a 44-yard run to the end zone that put Bonduel up 28-0 at halftime.

The Bonduel defense, meanwhile, refused to let Pacelli (1-7, 0-6 CWC-8) do anything offensively, holding the Cardinals to just 53 yards for the game.

“The defense played well,” Westrich said. “I think we got a little bit better. It was a good win for us.”

Dobratz finished 4 for 9 passing for 144 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Tauchen had two catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Rosin finished with three catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns.

VanDerLinden finished with 14 carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Berry had five touches for 87 yards.

Loss ends Hawks’ playoff hopes

Sat, 10/11/2014 - 9:29am
Henning TD avoids shutoutBy:

Leader Staff

The Menasha High School football team proved to be worthy of its No. 4 ranking among large schools in the Associated Press Wisconsin Prep Poll, beating Shawano 48-8 in a Bay Conference game Friday in Menasha.

“Playing against Menasha, they’re about as complete of a football team as we’re going to see,” Shawano coach Al Tomow said. “They looked every bit the part tonight.”

The loss to Menasha (8-0, 7-0 Bay) put the Hawks (3-5, 2-5 Bay) officially out of the playoffs.

Chase Henning saved Shawano from the shutout when he scored on a 40-yard run in the third quarter.

“Chase ran hard tonight,” Tomow said. “We did some good things on offense to start the game. We did some good things as a team tonight that people don’t usually do against Menasha. We moved the football in the first quarter. We made some small mistakes, and you can’t do that against Menasha.”

Henning finished with 63 yards on 11 carries. Zack Sousek added 20 yards on five carries. Jack Hanauer was 5 of 20 passing for 21 yards. Adam Bartz finished with two catches for 17 yards.

Menasha quarterback Tyler Johnson had four touchdown passes in the first half.

“Tonight they went to the air against us to get the lead,” Tomow said. “Then they ran the football to end the game. They have really nice balance. It’s a pro-style offense.”

Shawano will play at home Friday against Denmark (4-4, 3-4 Bay) on senior night.

“We want to make sure we fulfill our promise to give these seniors the best experience possible,” Tomow said. “We owe it to them to finish this season strong and give everything we have for what they have given our program over the years.”

With a win, Shawano would improve on last year’s record of 3-6 overall, but finish the same 3-5 in the Bay Conference.

Shawano has also added a game Oct. 23 against Wausau East. Both programs have agreed to not play any seniors in that game, giving them a chance to evaluate talent for next season.

“That will be a fun one for us,” Tomow said. “It’s a futures game to see what we have with our underclassmen going forward. It’ll be a lot of fun.”

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Madison McBride returns a serve Thursday in the Hawks’ 3-0 win over Marinette.

After cruising through two sets to open Thursday’s match against Marinette, the Shawano Community High School volleyball team found itself in a hole, down 17-10 to the Marines in the third game.

That’s when, seemingly, the Hawks decided they were going to win.

“They really united as a team tonight,” said coach Jessica Cumberland, who moved up from assistant coach after Jean Wolff recently stepped down for personal reasons. “There was a lot of positive energy with it being senior night. Just really knowing that they wanted it in their heart.”

Shawano (2-5 Bay Conference), which was on a five-game losing streak, rallied to a 26-24 win over Marinette (0-7 Bay) to complete the sweep.

On a night dedicated to them, Shawano’s trio of seniors — Courtney Vomastic, Madison McBride and Tori Wiskow — all had a hand in the rally.

Madison McBride finished the day with five aces. Vomastic had four digs.

Wiskow finished with seven kills and two blocks, including a big spike to tie the game at 21-21.

“That was awesome,” Cumberland said. “You probably saw me jumping on the sideline. It was perfect. Perfect set, perfect hit. It was exactly what we needed. It was beautiful.”

An ace by junior setter Annelies Young would tie it again at 23-23. The two teams traded points again before Marinette twice had hits go out of bounds to end the game.

Young finished with 24 assists for Shawano. Miranda Washinawatok had seven kills. Erika Dunnam had 11 kills and five digs.

Shawano won the first game 25-18 and the second 25-14.

Following the game, the seniors were given gifts, read letters from the underclassmen, played games for prizes and were served an postgame meal in the school commons with parents and friends.

“Ultimately, our seniors are our leaders,” Cumberland said. “Every year we have a different group of seniors step up. It’s important to acknowledge them and make it known that they are an important part of the team. And that we’re going to miss them, as well.”

Hawks beat Menasha in OT

Medina’s goal puts SCHS in 4th placeBy:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Michael Medina controls the ball in front of a Menasha player Thursday in Shawano. Shawano won, 1-0, in overtime on Medina’s first goal of the season to secure fourth place in the Bay Conference.

An overtime goal by Shawano Community High School senior Michael Medina lifted the Hawks to a 1-0 win over Menasha on Tuesday in Shawano.

The victory secured a fourth-place finish in the Bay Conference for the Hawks.

After 98 scoreless minutes, Medina, a forward, managed to get a goal on a scrum in front of the net.

“Their goalie made a couple of nice saves, but couldn’t catch the ball,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “Somebody was in the right spot on one of the deflections to put in the goal — Mike Medina.”

It was Medina’s first goal of the season.

“It was nice for him,” Croschere said. “It was nice for the team to get this last win. Both wins this week.”

Shawano defeated Denmark 3-2 Tuesday.

Senior goaltender Sajen Knueppel had 10 saves Thursday.

“Like I said at the beginning of the year, I thought that’s around where we’d be, fourth or fifth,” Croschere said. “I was happy were were in the top half. It would have been nice to be a little bit higher, but there were a few teams out there that had solid squads.”

The Hawks will be the sixth seed in the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament that opens at Wausau East on Tuesday.
