WEEK AHEAD

FOOTBALL

WHAT: Bonduel at Stevens Point Pacelli

WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Pacelli High School

WHY IT MATTERS: Bonduel (5-2, 3-2 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) is looking to stay in the playoff hunt Friday at Stevens Point Pacelli (1-6, 0-5 CWC-8). Bonduel needs one more conference win to become eligible for playoff consideration, and it needs to win the last two games of the season to clinch a playoff spot. The Bears would be well-advised to gain a game this week. Manawa (5-2, 3-2 CWC-8) and Iola-Scandinavia (5-2, 3-2 CWC-8) play each other this week. Win or lose, Manawa, Bonduel’s opponent in the final week of the season, will be either looking to remain eligible or to clinch a playoff spot when it visits Bonduel.

VOLLEYBALL

WHAT: Central Wisconsin Conference-8 tournament

WHEN: 10 a.m. Saturday

WHERE: Bonduel High School

WHY IT MATTERS: Bonduel (15-8, 5-2 CWC-8) earned the right to host half the CWC-8 volleyball tournament with a second-place finish during the regular season. First-place Weyauwega-Fremont (15-6, 7-0) will host the other half the same day. Competing in Bonduel’s half of pool play will be Amherst (0-5), Shiocton (1-4) and Wittenberg-Birnamwood (5-2). The top teams in pool play will meet on Tuesday. The team with the best record will host the championship.

The Shawano/Bonduel girls swimming team beat Marinette 103-67 in a Bay Conference meet Tuesday at Shawano Community High School.

“It was a very solid win,” Shawano/Bonduel coach Sharon Hanson said. “This meet was fun because we kind of knew we had to change it up a little bit.”

Despite some swimmers trying different events, the Hawks won nine of the 11 varsity events.

“They did awesome,” Hanson said. “People really pulled through.”

Shawano took the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay to build a 12-2 lead in the first event of the day. The team of Carlie Hinnefeld, Clare Martell, Ali Hanson and Whitney Banker took first with a time of 2:03.24. The team of Ailysh Tetting, Alyssa Anker, Emme Quandt and Lydia Colon took second with a time of 2:0716.

“Our relays did really well,” Sharon Hanson said. “We set up our relays. We kind of stacked them on the front end. It worked really, really well. It kind of gives us an idea where those relays are for the conference meet.”

The Hawks were up 32-23 by the break, during which the Shawano/Bonduel swimmers honored their parents.

“They were really excited,” said Sharon Hanson, who, like the other parents, received a rose from her daughter, Ali. “It’s fun.”

Martell, a junior, took first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.84. She also won the breaststroke, finishing in 1:10.63.

Quandt, a sophomore, won the 500 freestyle, finishing in 6:03.11. Colon, a freshman, finished in 6:26.34 to take second. Quandt also took second in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:33.68.

Anker, a junior, won the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.43. Hinnefeld, a sophomore, finished in 28.30 to take third. Anker later won the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.08. Tetting, a senior, took second with a time of 1:06.97.

Hanson, a senior, won the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.68, breaking the minute mark for a personal best. Banker, a senior, took third with a time of 1:22.08.

Hanson also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.44. Hinnefeld was second with a time of 1:09.23.

The team of Martell, Tetting, Anker and Hanson took first in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing in 1:49.80. Banker, junior Hayleigh Kroll, freshman Peyton Hrabik and Hinnefeld finished third in 1:59.34.

Colon, Quandt, Kroll and Hrabik teamed up to take second in the 400 freestyle, finishing in 4:40.08.

In junior varsity action, Shawano won 78-30.

Local golfers miss state cut

Season ends for Beck, DiemelBy:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School senior Taylor Diemel putts during the WIAA Division 2 sectional Monday at Mid-Valley Golf Course in De Pere.

Shawano Community High School junior Julia Beck saw her season come to an end Tuesday, shooting 100 at the WIAA Division 1 girls golf sectional at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken.

Beck had a 49 after the first nine holes.

“It was one of her better games,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “She kind of knew it was going to be tough today.”

The coach said Royal Scot played long Tuesday.

“She just wasn’t good enough on the greens,” Kugler said. “That’s what she’s going to work on for next year.”

Kugler said he hopes making sectionals as a junior will serve as a springboard for an even better senior season.

“Will she take it and run with it?” Kugler said. “She has the opportunity. Hopefully it opens her eyes that she’s not that far away.”

Beck qualified for the sectional by shooting a 97 at the Division 1 regional Oct. 1 at Thornberry Creek at Oneida.

Notre Dame (332) won the sectional. Kaukauna (353) took second. Both will advance to the state meet Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison.

Also advancing were the top three individual qualifiers. Maddy Neumeier of Green Bay Preble was the meet’s medalist with a 77. De Pere’s Megan Growt and Kaukauna’s Faith Williamson tied at 83 to take the second and third qualifier spots.

Division 2

Bonduel High School senior Taylor Diemel had a rough start and a miscue on the back nine at the Division 2 sectional Monday at Mid-Vallee Golf Course in De Pere. She finished with a 108.

“I think it was a great experience for her,” Bonduel coach Lynn Schaal said. “It’s something that she really wanted to do. I’m immensely proud of her. It shows a lot of hard work pays off.”

Struggles on the first two holes left Diemel with a 55 through the first nine holes. She managed to come in with a 53 on the back nine.

“I think in the beginning she was very nervous,” Schaal said. “The first couple, she started out rough, then she started doing a little bit better.”

Diemel shot a 97 at the Division 2 regional Oct. 1 at Irish Waters Golf Course to qualify for the sectional.

“She was excited to be there,” Schaal said. “She was pretty happy that she even made it. … I think overall she was pretty happy.”

Fox Valley Lutheran (318) won the sectional and, along with Racine The Prairie School (358), advanced to the state tournament. Milwaukee St. Thomas More’s Stanley Wang (81), Racine St. Catherine’s Sarah Busey (81) and Freedom’s Lori Meyer (81) all qualified as individuals for the state meet.

Fox Valley Lutheran’s Kayla Priebe (74) was the medalist.

Leader Photo by Jason Arndt From left, Carol Duquaine Schils, Tim McGuire and Ron Bowan display their Shawano Community High School athletic hall of fame plaques after a enshrinement ceremony Saturday. Bowan accepted the award on behalf of his late father, George,

Shawano Community High School added three members to its athletic Hall of Fame as part of its homecoming festivities Saturday.

The inductees were George Bowan, class of 1938; Tim McGuire, class of 1961 and Carol (Duquain) Schils, Class of 1973.

Ron Bowan accepted the honor on behalf of his father, who is deceased.

George Bowan participated in basketball, track and field and football.

In track, Bowan was part of the 1936 team that earned conference, district and state titles. In 1938 he was the individual state board jump champion. and helped the team finish second at state. In 1938 he was also part of the Shawano football team defense that went undefeated, and a defense that did not allow a score in conference play.

Bowan also excelled at golf, competing on the Shawano Club Golf team. Later in life he won several of the area’s regional tournaments.

McGuire earned eight varsity letters while participating in football, basketball and track and field from 1957-61.

McGuire was a senior on the 1961 Shawano boys basketball team that went to state. He averaged 20 points per game in the tournament, though Shawano lost to No. 1 Waukesha, 88-86, in a game that would a state scoring record that lasted for 50 years.

In track, McGuire went to the state finals in the 880-yard relay and held the school’s 220-yard dash record.

McGuire was the football team’s captain his senior year.

Schils, nicknamed “Cookie,” competed in volleyball and track as a four-year member of the Girls Athletic Association.

Schils and her volleyball teammates won the first-ever state volleyball team championship in Wisconsin. She joined her coach, Matty Mathison, in the hall of fame.

In track, Schils competed in the high jump at the 1973 state track meet.

The inductees were treated to breakfast Saturday and featured in the homecoming parade. A dedication ceremony was held in the SCHS commons, and they were recognized before the Hawks’ homecoming football game against Luxemburg-Casco.

Homecoming loss hurts Hawks' playoff hopes

Sat, 10/04/2014 - 9:03pm
Defense, special teams play wellBy:

[email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Zack Sousek runs around Luxemburg-Casco’s Carson Falk during Saturday’s homecoming game in Shawano. Sousek rushed for 42 yards and scored on a 73-yard fumble recovery, but the Hawks lost to Luxemburg-Casco, 19-14.
Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior running back Chase Henning carries the ball Saturday during the Hawks’ homecoming game against Luxemburg-Casco. Shawano lost to the Spartans, 19-14.

A few big special teams and defensive plays were not enough for the Shawano Community High School football team, whose offense could produce only a pair of field goals in a 19-14 homecoming loss to Luxemburg-Casco on a rainy Saturday.

A stout Shawano defense that provided six points when senior Zack Sousek returned a fumble for a touchdown and forced two punts and three turnovers on downs gave the Hawks the lead until the fourth quarter.

The defense, however, could not overcome four interceptions thrown by sophomore quarterback Jack Hanauer and two drives that turned into field goals rather than TDs.

“The defense did a great job today, kept us in the football game, forced turnovers, got some stops,” Shawano coach Al Tomow said. “We needed to do some more on offense, and we just didn’t get it done today. We wasted a good effort by our defense.”

After stalling on their first drive, the Hawks (3-4, 2-4 Bay Conference) regained possession when the Luxemburg-Casco (5-2, 4-2 Bay) punt returner dropped the wet ball and Shawano recovered at the Spartan 30. The Hawks, however, had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by senior Braden Mueller .

On Luxemburg-Casco’s ensuing drive, the punter's knee touched the ground as he fielded ta low snap, giving Shawano the ball at the Luxemburg-Casco 39. A fumbled snap gave the ball back to L-C.

Once again the Shawano defense held firm, getting a stop on fourth-and-3 at midfield. The Hawks turned that into Mueller’s second field goal of the day, a 24-yarder, that put Shawano up 6-0.

“We moved the football, we sustained drives, we just didn’t finish in the end zone,” Tomow said. “It’s the same details that have killed us all year. It’s the one missed assignment on the play and that’s what takes us back. We’re not quite good enough to overcome those yet. We need to play good, sound football. For the most part we did today.”

Shawano threatened again late in the first half, on a drive extended by Sousek on a 20-yard fake punt.

Hanauer, a 6-foot, 160-pounder who took over the quarterback position last week in Marinette, threw a jump ball to Sousek at the 1-yard line, a battle the 5-10 receiver has been able to win against defensive backs all season.

This time Sousek lost the fight to Luxemburg-Casco defensive back Kyle Routhieaux, who snagged the interception.

The Spartans ran the ball effectively in its opening drive of the second half, capped by a 45-yard touchdown run by Seth Peters, who ended up with 140 yards rushing on the day.

Things appeared bleak for Shawano when Hanauer threw his second interception of the day on the Hawks' ensuing drive, but a fumble on an inside run by the Spartans ended up in Sousek’s hands. Sousek had an open field and went 73 yards for a touchdown. He then plowed in for the 2-point conversion to give Shawano a 14-7 lead.

“Big plays find Zack,” Tomow said. “That shows what kind of athlete that he is, that’s he’s able to come away with a big play even when they know he’s on the field.”

Luxemburg-Casco responded with a 57-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard Peters dive. The Shawano defense swarmed on a 2-point conversion attempt, though, to preserve a 14-13 Shawano lead.

The Spartans finally took the lead in the fourth quarter when quarterback David Vlotho found Dylan McGuire for a 36-yard touchdown.

Shawano’s offense had no answer late, with two drives ending with interceptions.

“We knew there would be growing pains with Jack,” Tomow said. “Jack will tell you that there were a couple of throws he wishes he could have back that kind of put us in a tough spot. He’s making the right reads, and he’s running hard. The guys believe in him. We need to minimize the mistakes that we make and make other teams beat us.”

Hanauer completed 15 of 30 passes for 136 yards. His favorite target was Adam Bartz, a 6-1, 175-pound junior who had eight catches for 83 yards. Sousek was the leading rusher with 10 carries for 44 yards.

Vlotho finished 5 of 8 passing for 97 yards. McGuire had three catches for 88 yards.

Hopes for Shawano to make its first playoff appearance since 2010 diminished greatly with Saturday’s loss. Shawano needs to win its last two games to be eligible for playoff consideration. It faces undefeated Menasha (7-0, 6-0 Bay) on the road Friday.

“Menasha is a tough team. They’re one of the top teams in the state,” Tomow said. “We know how good they are, but we’re going to go in there and give them our best shot.”

Close, but not enough

Bonduel falls to Shiocton againBy:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shiocton High School defensive back Samuel Otto (87) gets an interception over teammate Austin Duenas (9) and in front of Bonduel senior receiver Connor Rosin during Friday’s game in Bonduel. Bonduel lost to the Chiefs, 27-7.

For the fourth-straight time, the Bonduel High School football team was defeated by Central Wisconsin-Conference-8 foe Shiocton, losing 27-7 Friday in Bonduel.

It was a far cry from last year’s 47-0 drubbing in Shiocton, but special teams miscues and turnovers were too much for the Bears to overcome.

“They’re a great football team,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said. “They make you beat them; they don’t beat themselves. That’s what we did today a little bit.”

Bonduel’s day started well, forcing a turnover on downs and getting a quick score when senior quarterback Colton Dobratz (6-foot, 160 pounds) found senior receiver Connor Rosin (6-2, 195 pounds) for a 26-yard touchdown. Dobratz would finish with 51 yards on 9 of 25 passing.

Bonduel relied on its defense to keep the lead, forcing back-to-back punts even after a Dobratz interception gave Shiocton good field position.

In the second quarter, though, Shiocton got on the scoreboard. Quarterback Brandon Spencer (5-7, 130 pounds) found Austin Riehl for a 15-yard touchdown throw that tied the game. Later Luis Leon would make a 38-yard field goal to put the Chiefs up 10-7 at halftime.

While the defense continued to force punts, Bonduel’s offense struggled to get going, with every possession after its first ending in a punt or turnover. Late in the third, when the offense fumbled the ball away, the Bonduel defense forced its own fumble to get the ball back.

“I thought our defense played really well,” Westrich said. “We made some mistakes early, but we adjusted. We had a lot of missed assignments in the first quarter, but after that we played better. I’m happy with the way they played.”

Early in the fourth quarter, Shiocton took command when it got a safety on a botched punt and then returned the ensuing kick for a touchdown to take a 19-7 lead.

Late in the quarter the Bears finally put together a significant drive, spurred by hard running from senior Hunter VanDerLinden (5-11, 215 pounds). It came to a premature end, though, when Shiocton’s Garrett Gunderson stepped in front of a Dobratz pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown.

A 2-point conversion later and the Chiefs were up 27-7.

“They’re well-coached. We knew that coming in,” Westrich said. “Their defense was going to be tough to run against. We can’t make mistakes. We can’t have penalties, we can’t have turnovers and we can’t give up special teams stuff. That’s what we did tonight.”

VanDerLinden finished with 138 yards on 28 carries. Dan Tauchen had 37 yards on 11 carries.

Spencer was 3 of 10 for 48 yards and a touchdown. Henry Fielding led Shiocton’s rushing attack with 17 carries for 105 yards.

While Bonduel (5-2, 3-2 CWC-8) falls behind Shiocton (6-1, 4-1) to third in the CWC-8, it still has a chance to make the playoffs. A win either at Stevens Point Pacelli next week or at home in the final week of the season would make Bonduel eligible for playoff consideration. Winning both games would clinch a playoff berth.

“We just have to keep getting better,” Westrich said. “I thought our effort was there. We did a lot of things in this game, too. But they capitalized on our mistakes. They’re notorious for making you go the length of the field, sustain a drive and not make mistakes. We have to clean up the mistakes and the turnovers.”

BHS golfer advances to sectional

Thu, 10/02/2014 - 7:25am
Diemel’s hard work pays offBy:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Contributed Photo Bonduel High School senior Taylor Diemel concentrates on a putt during Wednesday’s WIAA Division 2 regional at Irish Waters Golf Course in Freedom.

Taylor Diemel was determined to pick up her game after a slump this season.

A lot of hard work later, and a few extra trips to Irish Waters Golf Course in Freedom, and the senior is bound for sectionals.

Diemel shot a 97, one of her best rounds of the season, at Irish Waters at the WIAA Division 2 regional Wednesday. She tied with Little Chute’s Katie Spaeth for 10th, taking the third of four individual qualifying spots for Monday’s sectional at Mid-Vallee Golf Course in De Pere.

“She really wanted to make it an opportunity for her,” Bonduel coach Lynn Schaal said. “She played well.”

Diemel is the first Bonduel girls golfer to reach sectionals since Bethany Voekler did it her junior season in 2010.

Freedom’s Lori Meyer (88) finished fifth overall to nab the first individual spot, Wrightstown’s Victoria Draxler (95) took the second spot by finishing eighth and Oconto Falls Brittany Russell (104) took the fourth spot finishing 18th.

Diemel, along with senior sisters Samantha Schaal and Elizabeth Schaal and juniors Danielle Lautenbach and Alex Brandt, hoped to go as a team, but rough play on the back nine dropped the team to sixth, with a team score of 430.

“We hoped we could go as a team,” said Lynn Schaal, who is Samantha and Elizabeth’s mother. “Elizabeth and Danielle fell apart a little bit. So we were left with Taylor.”

Lautenbach finished at 108. Elizabeth Schaal carded 110, Samantha Schaal 115 and Brandt 119.

While her teammates were struggling on the back nine, Diemel was playing her best. She tied with Lautenbach for 50 on the first nine holes, but shot a 47 coming back, better than all but seven golfers at the regional.

Diemel spent extra time at Irish Waters to improve her game, which she came to realize had slipped during conference play this season.

“She had a really nice round,” Lynn Schaal said. “She’s been practicing. She’s from Navarino, which isn’t that far from Freedom. She’s been going on the weekends and practicing for a while.”

Coach Schaal said Diemel, who missed sectionals her sophomore season by two strokes, started the year strong, but slipped as work and school responsibilities piled up.

“She had a hard time there for a little while,” Lynn Schaal said. “The last couple of weeks she decided she was really going to concentrate on her golf game going into the end of the season. Hard work paid off.”

Lynn Schaal said she was sad the team could not advance, but said the teammates are more than willing to support Diemel.

“The girls on the team are going to see if they can schedule it to go with her to practice,” Lynn Schaal said. “They want to be there with her and give her a little competition. Even though they are not going on, they want to practice with her.”

Fox Valley Lutheran (329), Seymour (400), Marinette (400) and Little Chute (407) qualified for the sectional as the top-four teams.

Noelle Koepp and Kayla Priebe, both of Fox Valley Lutheran, tied at 77 to earn medalist honors. Fox Valley Lutheran, which plays in the Eastern Valley Conference with Bonduel, had four of the top five golfers at the regional and five of the top seven.

Beck shoots 97, makes sectional

Thu, 10/02/2014 - 7:23am
First trip to sectional for SCHS golferBy:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

The young Shawano Community High School girls golf team regressed, but junior Julia Beck earned a trip to sectionals at Wednesday’s WIAA Division 1 regional tournament at Thornberry Creek at Oneida.

Beck shot a 97, finishing tied with Green Bay Preble’s Sydney Onesti for ninth. Beck had the lowest individual qualifying score, ahead of Ashwaubenon’s Kayley Sjoholm (98), Pulaski’s Emma Jonas (100) and Ashwaubenon’s Dani Neel (100).

“She played pretty well,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “She left a lot of shots out there, too.”

Beck had a solid start, carding 47 on the front nine.

“I think she was hitting the ball from the tee as well as she has all year,” Kugler said. “When I watched her, a lot of chips and putts she left on the course. But, obviously, she played well. I saw her hit some really good drives.”

It will be Beck’s first trip to sectionals.

As a team Shawano finished seventh with a score of 455.

“We shot about 20 strokes worse than we did the other day there,” Kugler said. “We didn’t play our best today.”

Junior Emily Smith shot 116, freshman Brianna Zook and junior Gabby Krueger both shot 121, and junior Sydney Schreiber had 126.

“It can be intimidating playing with some of these teams,” Kugler said. “I think the girls did OK, though.”

“We would have had to beat Green Bay Southwest/West, and that would have been hard to do,” Kugler said. “We would have had to shoot better than, probably, we have all year. That’s asking a lot out of a bunch of girls that just started the game.”

Preble’s Maddy Neumeier shot a 78 to earn medalist honors.

Notre Dame (332), Preble (361), Bay Port (406) and Green Bay Southwest/West (415) all qualified for the Division 1 sectional at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken on Tuesday.

“(Beck) said she went there this summer with her family,” Kugler said. “But we as a team have never played there.”

Kugler said Royal Scot is more open than Thornberry Creek, which could help Beck.

“It’s not as difficult as Thornberry, that’s for sure,” he said.

WEEK AHEAD

FOOTBALL

WHAT: Bonduel vs. Shiocton

WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Bonduel High School

WHY IT MATTERS: The Bonduel High School football team (5-1, 3-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) and Shiocton (5-1, 3-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) come into Friday’s game tied for second place in the CWC-8 behind undefeated Amherst (6-0, 4-0). Both teams need just one more win to become playoff eligible. Bonduel was blown out at Shiocton 47-0 last year when the Chiefs went on to win a WIAA Division 6 title. Bonduel has not beaten Shiocton since a 21-6 win at home in 2010.

FOOTBALL

WHAT: Shawano vs. Luxemburg-Casco

WHEN: 1 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Shawano Community High School

WHY IT MATTERS: The Shawano Community High School football team (3-3, 2-3 Bay Conference) plays its homecoming game against Luxemburg-Casco (4-2 3-2 Bay). The Hawks must win two of its last three games of the season to have a chance to make the postseason. With undefeated Menasha (6-0, 6-0) looming next week, the games against Luxemburg-Casco on Saturday and Denmark (3-3, 2-3) in the final week of the season look like must-wins if Shawano wants to make its first post-season appearance since 2010.

Bears get key conference sweep

Wed, 10/01/2014 - 7:15am
Bonduel rallies from 10-point deficit in 3rd gameBy:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School sophomore Kailee Pedersen attacks the ball Tuesday during a match against Shiocton in Bonduel. Bonduel swept Shiocton, 3-0.

Bonduel High School senior hitter Jen Dowden was dominant in the middle, sophomores Danee Collier and Kailee Pedersen provided a spark serving, and the Bears got a key 3-0 sweep Tuesday against Central Wisconsin Conference-8 foe Shiocton in Bonduel.

Heading into the game, Bonduel (4-2 CWC-8) was knotted in a four-way tie with Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Iola-Scandinavia and Stevens Point Pacelli for second place in the CWC-8 behind Weyauwega-Fremont.

Getting the sweep helped Bonduel’s win percentage, which could be a key tie-breaker come tournament time and could get the Bears another shot at Weyauwega-Fremont.

After taking the first two games Tuesday (25-19, 25-15), Bonduel fell behind 7-1 to open the third set.

In the past, the Bears often did not stay aggressive when trailing.

“I feel like we’ve been driving it into them for two years,” Bonduel coach Kim Bodoh said.

This year, though, the Bears have kept attacking.

“Lots of big comebacks from them,” Bodoh said. “Now I would like them to get ahead at the beginning. … I would say we’ve had four or five where we’ve come back from being down by at least 10 points and come back to win.”

Tuesday’s match was another example.

Dowden, who had Shiocton guessing all night in the middle, stayed on the attack after the Bears fell behind 19-9.

“On nights when Jenny is hitting the ball hard and hitting the ball well, she kind of takes the other team’s defense out of their game,” Bodoh said. “She’s probably one of the hardest hitters in our conference. They don’t get to see that every day.”

With Collier serving, the Bears cut the deficit to 19-15.

After giving back a point, Bonduel continued the rally with Pedersen serving. Bonduel eventually tied Shiocton (0-5) at 20-20 and went on to win, 25-22. Pedersen would finish with seven service points in the game.

Dowden finished the night with 18 kills, four blocks and 10 digs. Collier had 10 digs and two aces. Miranda Schmidt had 12 assists. Taylor Weier’s 10 points helped win the second game.

Bodoh said Dowden and fellow senior Lexi Reinke are playing well.

“I think my seniors realize that their time is dwindling down,” Bodoh said. “They’re only going to get to play in front of this home crowd one more conference game, and then maybe a tournament game here or there. I think that is starting to hit home for them.”

Bonduel hosts Amherst on Tuesday before the CWC-8 tournament begins Oct. 11.

Hawks struggle in 2nd half in loss to Marinette

Sophomore makes first start at quarterbackBy:

The Marinette High School football team paid tribute to its 1989 state championship football team with a stellar second half at Higley Stadium on Friday night.

Marinette (2-4, 2-4 Bay) beat visiting Shawano 42-21 to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Hawks fell to 3-3 overall, 2-3 in the Bay Conference.

After Shawano took a 7-6 halftime lead on the strength of a picture-perfect two-minute drill, Marinette’s 1989 team was honored in a halftime ceremony. The Marines looked like a different team in the second half.

“We played a strong first half,” Shawano coach Al Tomow said. “We came out in the second half and allowed Marinette to move up and down the field. We had to play catch-up the entire second half.”

“We definitely changed the bar a little bit,” Marinette senior lineman Kolby Garza said. “Our tempo, our mindset.”

Senior Colton Dessart said the seniors talked about how they had just 10 quarters remaining, plus the M&M (Marinette and Menominee) game.

“We all made a promise to each other in the lockerroom that we were going to clean up on mistakes,” Dessart said.

The second half started with a seven-play, 61-yard scoring drive, capped by Dessart’s 16-yard touchdown run. Luke Johnson threw a two-point conversion pass to Jonte Webb for a 14-7 lead.

Shawano’s fake punt backfired with an incompletion. That gave the Marines a short field, and they capitalized with Dessart’s 6-yard TD run with 2:38 in the third quarter. Webb’s 14-yard catch on fourth-and-6 kept the drive alive, and Matt Richmond kicked the first of four extra points.

On Marinette’s next play from scrimmage, tailback Caylubb Maske broke off a 57-yard TD run with 55.4 seconds in the third quarter.

Shawano responded with Zack Sousek’s 10-yard TD run, which was set up by Jack Hanauer’s 37-yard pass to Adam Bartz.

But Webb recovered the ensuing onside kick, and Maske capped Marinette’s drive with a 5-yard scoring run with 8:14 remaining.

Sousek, who burned the Marines all night with big kick returns, caught a 30-yard TD pass from Hanauer with 6:39 remaining.

Jimmy Jackimowicz capped the scoring with a shifty 14-yard cutback TD run.

“We challenged our kids,” Marinette coach Andy Walters said of the halftime speech. “We weren’t executing very well offensively. Obviously they responded well, and I’m very proud of them for that.”

Marinette took a 6-0 lead with 2:06 in the first quarter on Maske’s 12-yard TD run. Jackimowicz’s nice over-the-shoulder 22-yard reception on fourth down kept the drive alive.

Hanauer completed 4 of 6 passes during Shawano’s two-minute drill to end the half. Chase Henning capped the 80-yard drive with a 3-yard run with 24.5 seconds in the half.

“I think we have to look at what we did in the first half,” Tomow said. “We didn’t force any turnovers, but we played really strong. We bent, but we didn’t break. We gave up one touchdown. Our offense came down strong at the end of the half and scored. That’s the kind of football we have to play.”

The Hawks netted zero rushing yards on 25 attempts.

“That’s what high school football is all about,” Walters said. “You’ve got to be able to stop the run and make them throw. They did some things offensively that had us break our rules.”

Hanauer, a sophomore making his first start at quarterback for Shawano, completed 23 of 44 passes for 287 yards. Cole Huntington, who started the previous five games, moved to linebacker Friday.

“Once Jack settled in he made some great throws tonight,” Tomow said. “He really showed that he was ready to be a varsity quarterback. I think that’s something he can definitely build on.”

More than half of Marinette’s state title team was on hand, and former coaches Joel Hanner and Tim Stauss were honorary captains.

Bears take care of business on the road

Sat, 09/27/2014 - 12:21am
Bonduel has showdown with Shiocton next weekBy:

Leader Staff

The Bonduel High School football team earned a key Central Wisconsin Conference-8 win Friday, beating Weyauwega-Fremont 61-21, to set up a match between second-place teams next week in Bonduel.

Bonduel (5-1, 3-1 CWC-8) will host Shiocton (5-1, 3-1 CWC-8), which beat Stevens Point Pacelli 41-0 Friday. Both teams have only lost to first-place Amherst (6-0, 4-0 CWC-8).

“Every win in conference is important, trying to get to that magical number 4 to make the playoffs,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said. “Everything after that is a bonus. We have a big game coming up next week. We were happy we didn’t overlook this team. They’re a good team.”

Bonduel took control early against Weyauwega-Fremont, getting a 55-yard touchdown run from senior Dan Tauchen and a 14-yard touchdown run from senior Hunter VanDerLinden.

Quarterback Blake Hudziak punched it in a 2-yard run in the first quarter for Weyauwega-Fremont (2-4, 1-3 CWC-8), but Bonduel was off to the races in the second, scoring 27 points.

Bonduel would finish with 537 yards rushing. VanDerLinden led the way with three touchdowns and 198 yards on 18 carries. Tauchen had six carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

“I was really happy with the way our kids came out and played physical,” Westrich said. “I thought we wore them out a little bit.”

Bonduel quarterback Colton Dobratz went 4 for 5 passing for 75 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Connor Rosin, who had three catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Austin Sioka had two interceptions, one in the first and one in the fourth, before leaving the game with an injury.

The Bears’ pass defense gave up 319 yards to Hudziak. Hudziak completed 18 of his 31 pass attempts for two touchdowns.

Ten of those passes went to Dylan Pankow for 128 yards and a touchdown.

“Against the run, I thought we were fine,” Westrich said. “We have to tighten up our pass defense.”

Bears top Gillett in ‘Dig for a Cure’

Fri, 09/26/2014 - 7:50am
Event raises over $1K for families dealing with cancerBy:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School junior Hayley Pues hits a ball Thursday during a nonconference match against Gillett in Bonduel. Bonduel swept Gillett, 3-0.

The Bonduel High School girls volleyball team beat Gillett in three straight games, the home crowd helped the Bears outraise Gillett in the dash for cash, and more than a $1,000 was raised at the “Dig for a Cure” Thursday at Bonduel High School.

The annual game, which alternates between the two schools, raises funds to be donated to local families fighting cancer.

“The two communities and the school just work so well together,” Bonduel coach Kim Bodoh said. “They’re just a fun, easy staff to work with. It makes it a fun event.”

In the dash for cash, Bonduel raised $270 and Gillett $133.32. Money also was raised through T-shirt sales and raffles.

On the court, with the players of both sides clad in pink, the competition was close, aside from the second game, which Bonduel wasted no time in winning 25-9.

“I’m happy with it,” Bodoh said. “We tried out some new stuff on offense. We tried to run some different plays on our offense that we’ve been practicing but we haven’t tried in conference yet. It was exciting to try some of those plays, even though some of them didn’t go well.”

The first game started with a small Bonduel lead, before Gillett rallied to tie it at 21-21. The Bears pushed ahead of Gillett 23-21, but the teams tied again at 24-24 before Bonduel scored the last two points.

The third game looked early like a repeat of the second. Bonduel took a 10-4 lead and was up 18-9 before Gillett rallied to within 20-17 with junior Jessica Anderson serving.

“With their big hitters, I was ecstatic with how they played that first game and even the tail end of this third game,” Gillett coach Keri Hicks said. “Jessica Anderson served great, which was a huge thing in both games.”

Anderson would finish with six service aces, along with two kills, 13 assists and three digs.

“We struggled with one of their servers,” Bodoh said. “I think when things are going well offensively, they forget about the defensive side of the game.”

Bonduel was able to hold off the Gillett rally, though, to win the game 25-21.

Seniors Jen Dowden and Lexi Reinke did most of the damage against Gillett. Dowden finished with nine kills, 11 digs and five blocks in the middle. Outside, Reinke had seven kills and eight digs. Miranda Schmidt had 10 assists.

For Gillett, senior Taylor Kohls led with seven kills and one block. Erin Balthazor had four kills and 10 digs. Victoria Loberger had eight digs, four kills and one block.

“Kohls made some good decisions here tonight,” Hicks said. “She had a couple of attacks that were long, but when you’re going to swing at it, that’s going to happen.”

Shawano finishes season in sixth placeBy:

Shawano golfers prepare for regional

Young team improving, gaining experienceBy:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School junior Sydney Schreiber putts on the 17th hole green Monday at Thornberry Creek at Oneida Golf Course.

The Shawano Community High School girls golf team is young, with four juniors and a freshman comprising the varsity squad.

So coach Dean Kugler just wanted to see the team improve as the season went on.

“They have done a really good job of plugging away and trying to get better,” Kugler said after Monday’s Green Bay Notre Dame Triton Invite at Thornberry Creek at Oneida. “Our goal all year has been to get a little bit better.”

Kugler said Monday was the culmination of that goal for the team.

“We’ve gotten better every single time,” he said. “We’re playing a harder course and we’re shooting the same scores. So that is getting better.”

Notre Dame Blue won the meet with a score of 326. Verona’s Jessica Reinecke, who shot a 74, was the medalist.

Shawano finished 20th out of 24 teams with a team score of 439. Brianna Zook, a freshman, led Shawano with a round of 105.

“She keeps getting better and better,” Kugler said. “So do all the girls.”

Juniors Julia Beck (109), Sydney Schreiber (111), Emily Smith (114) and Gabby Krueger (130) all logged scores they’re used to seeing on easier courses.

“We’re content with the fact that they weren’t blown away by this course. It’s a difficult course,” Kugler said. “Everyone is going to be back next year. It’ll be fine, and they’ll have all this experience behind them.”

The Hawks also will be able to draw on Monday’s experience when they return to Thornberry Creek on Oct. 1 for the WIAA Division 1 regional tournament.

At the regional, the top four teams and top four individuals not on a top-four team will advance to sectionals, which will be held Oct. 7 at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken.
