Tigerton withstands Gresham rally

Third game won 30-28By:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Tigerton High School senior Katie Watters (11) tries to hit a ball past Gresham defender Brianna Stehberger during a Central Wisconsin Conference-10 matchup Tuesday in Gresham. Tigerton won all three games.

Down two games, the Gresham Community High School volleyball team had no quit in it, forcing Tigerton to a 28-28 tie in the third game of a Central Wisconsin Conference-10 match Tuesday in Gresham.

The Wildcats finally gave up the last two points to Tigerton, losing the game 30-28 and the match along with it.

“Our girls just kept fighting,” Gresham coach Tim Wild said. “It took until the very end. It’s easy to get down on yourself when you’re down 2-0. They didn’t do that. I’m proud of them for staying in it all night.”

Tigerton senior Sarah Gauthier made it 29-28 with a spike kill, and then Gresham lost the next point on a misplayed bump that sailed into the net, ending the marathon last set.

“They’ve been talking better all week,” Tigerton coach Holly Block said. “I just told them they did what they had to do to win. So if it was pretty or not, they kept it going.”

Block said the Tigers are familiar with close games.

“I’m so proud of them because we’ve lost some close matches,” Block said. “So this one is one they won. I think that gives them a lot of confidence.”

Tigerton charged out to an 11-7 lead in the final set. Gresham pulled to 12-10 and then 16-14, before taking its first lead of the night at 18-16.

It would be short-lived for the Wildcats, though, as Tigerton pulled ahead 20-19. The two teams then knotted at 23-23 and traded points through 28-28.

“It was back and forth,” Wild said. “We just couldn’t find the way to put the finishing point off there at the end.”

Tigerton won the first game 25-20 after taking a 21-11 lead. Gresham kept things closer in the next game, which was tied at 9-9 before Tigerton pulled away to a 20-12 advantage. Eventually Tigerton won 25-18.

“Our girls got themselves in some deficits tonight,” Wild said. “That’s why I tell the girls every single point matters in every game. We found ourselves in a hole almost every game. We fought back, but the hole was too big for us to get over the top.”

Senior Katie Watters led the team with eight kills and nine digs manning the middle for the Tigers.

“Katie is my leader on the court,” Block said. “She can hit any ball. She can go left, she can go right. And with only one blocker against her all night, I don’t think it was a problem.”

Gauthier finished with 14 digs and six kills.

“She’s a wonderful back-row player,” Block said. “She’s been a back-row player her sophomore and junior seasons and now she plays all over for me.”

Morgan Marquardt had four aces.

First-half flurry lifts Hawks over Oconto Falls

Fri, 09/19/2014 - 11:53pm
Shawano scores 3 TDs in 3 minutesBy:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Dylan Hintz (50) tackles Oconto Falls running back Samuel Konitzer during Friday’s Bay Conference game at SCHS. Shawano won, 43-14.
Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior quarterback Cole Huntington (7) runs a read-option play during a Bay Conference game against Oconto Falls on Friday at SCHS. Huntington rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another, and Shawano won 43-14.

It started as a bad sequence.

Down 6-3 against Bay Conference foe Oconto Falls in the second quarter Friday, the Shawano Community High School football team committed four straight penalties to face second-and-47. When senior receiver Zack Sousek reeled off a 16-yard run and no flags flew, the packed stands responded with a bit of a Bronx cheer.

What came next had the Shawano fans cheering for real.

Quarterback Cole Huntington, a 6-foot-2, 145-pound senior, found junior Adam Bartz (6-1, 175 pounds) for a 27-yard completion on third-and-31. Huntington and Bartz connected again to convert on fourth-and-four.

A few plays later, Huntington ran a keeper into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown, and the Hawks were on their way to a 43-14 victory.

“We felt the momentum kind of tipping toward them,” Shawano coach Al Tomow said. “We kept shooting ourselves in the foot by getting penalties. We ended up in a second-and-long situation. We told the kids, ‘just do your job.’”

“I don’t think we’ve ever did that before,” Huntington said of facing second-and-47. “You don’t see that often.”

The score, which came with 3:14 left in the first half, ignited Shawano (3-2, 2-2 Bay Conference).

Oconto Falls (0-5, 0-5) mishandled a pitch on the ensuing kickoff. A Shawano player came up with the ball, and Shawano was back to work at the Oconto Falls 17. Senior running back Chase Henning (6-0, 175 pounds) punched it in from 5 yards out, putting Shawano ahead 16-6.

Oconto Falls, which had had some success running the ball throughout the first half, was forced to punt in the final seconds of the half to Sousek, who cut through the first wave of Oconto Falls defenders, cut across the field and headed down the sideline for an 85-yard touchdown.

“Those are huge moments in our program,” Tomow said. “It shows we can overcome adversity. We took a step tonight.”

Shawano’s first score of the day was a 25-yard field goal from senior Braden Mueller.

Later in the first quarter, a Henning fumble gave the Panthers a short field.

Oconto Falls sophomore quarterback Connor Scray (6-0, 168 pounds) managed to punch it in from the Shawano 1-yard line to give his team a 6-3 lead early in the second quarter.

In the second half, Huntington scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and completed a pass to sophomore Dylan Sumnicht for a 24-yard touchdown in the fourth.

“We wanted to finish the game and put them out of the game for good,” Huntington said. “That’s what we came out and did.”

Huntington completed five of 10 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 11 times for 49 yards and two touchdowns.

With the game in hand, he gave way to sophomore Daniel Hanauer, who tossed a 15-yard TD pass to Bartz. Bartz finished with three catches for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Henning had 25 carries for 169 yards and a touchdown.

Oconto Falls scored early in the third quarter when senior running back Samuel Konitzer (5-8, 160 pounds) found the end zone from 7 yards out. He finished with 10 carries for 54 yards. Scray had 14 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown.

VanderLinden, Tauchen combine for 5 TDsBy:

Leader Staff

The Bonduel High School football team gave up a few big plays in Friday’s homecoming game against Central Wisconsin Conference-8 foe Iola-Scandinavia, but relentless running by its three-headed backfield was more than enough to get the 44-29 win.

Bonduel running backs Hunter VanderLinden, Dan Tauchen and Hunter Berry combined for 319 of Bonduel’s 358 yards.

VanderLinden, who scored two short-yardage touchdowns in the first half, finished with 30 carries for 141 yards for Bonduel (4-1, 2-1 CWC-8). Berry chipped in 71 yards on seven carries.

Tauchen came in late with fresh legs and dominated the fourth quarter with three touchdown runs. He finished with 13 carries for 107 yards.

Quarterback Colton Dobratz was 6 of 12 passing for 114 yards. He scored on a 4-yard keeper in the second quarter.

Connor Rosin kicked a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter for the Bears.

Iola-Scandinavia (3-2, 1-2) took a 7-0 lead on a 83-yard pass from Cameron Gruenewald to Evan Fuhs on its first play from scrimmage. The Thunderbirds added another touchdown later in the first quarter, and scored two more in the fourth.

Former athletes honored in pregame ceremonyBy:

Leader Staff

Bonduel High School inducted three former athletes into its hall of fame Friday before the football team’s game against Iola-Scandinavia.

The honorees were Richard Gruenewald, Class of 1946, Andrea (Weier) Burch, Class of 1996, and Jessica (Berger) Skinkis, Class of 2005.

Gruenewald was a three-sport star, participating in football, basketball and track. A captain in football and basketball, he was named the basketball team’s most valuable player his senior year, averaging more than 15 points a game.

In football, Gruenewald led the area in receptions his senior year, catching 37 passes in seven games. He was first-team All-Wolf River Valley Conference and honorable mention all-state.

Though Gruenewald held school records in track, those times have been lost.

Burch played volleyball, basketball and softball, and earned 10 varsity letters.

In basketball, Burch was first-team All-Central Wisconsin Conference-Large her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. She ranks fifth in BHS all-time scoring (874 points) and seventh in rebounds (396).

She was named first-team All-CWC-Large in softball as a senior and was an honorable mention as a junior.

In volleyball, she earned an all-CWC-Large honorable mention as a senior.

Skinkis participated in basketball, softball and cross-country, earning 11 varsity letters.

A two-time state qualifier in cross-country, Skinkis finished eighth as a freshman and 30th as a sophomore. She was captain of the girls cross-country team twice and named MVP three times. She was conference champion her freshman and sophomore years, and earned honorable mention all-conference recognition as a senior.

In basketball, Skinkis was a unanimous first-team all-conference selection and Central Wisconsin Conference basketball player of the year as a senior. She ranks seventh in school history in scoring (824) and first in assists (398). She is also second in career 3-point baskets (83), fourth in free-throw percentage (70.9) and fourth in steals (196).

Skinkis was also conference player of the year her senior season in softball. She earned first-team selections her sophomore, junior and senior seasons, and was the team’s MVP all three of those seasons.

In addition to being academic all-conference all four years, Skinkis was named the senior female athlete of the year.

The Bonduel High School Hall of Fame has 27 members, including the class of 2014. The hall was started in 2006.

Hawks outswim last year’s Bay champs

Hanson, Quandt win key events against Sturgeon BayBy:

The Shawano/Bonduel high school girls swim team might have gotten off on the wrong foot Thursday against defending Bay Conference champion Sturgeon Bay, but the Hawks finished strong to earn a 96-72 victory at home.

“Last year, we lost to them by nine points,” Shawano/Bonduel coach Sharon Hanson said. “It was a big win.”

Shawano/Bonduel would have led the meet 10-4 after the first event, but an early start disqualified its 200-yard medley relay team, which had won. Instead, Sturgeon Bay got the eight first-place points, and tacked on two more for taking third, going ahead 10-4.

Sturgeon Bay added to its lead with a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle.

Senior Ali Hanson, a state qualifier in a year ago, started the comeback for Shawano/Bonduel, taking first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.49 seconds.

“She’s hitting pretty nice times for this early in the season,” said coach Hanson, who is Ali’s mother. “She’s very close already. That’s a good thing.”

Emme Quandt helped close the gap to within one point (39-38) by winning the 100 butterfly.

“That was a very big win for her,” Sharon Hanson said. “She knew she was going into that race with a person that has the same time as her. … So that was a big win for her, and she dropped a bunch of time.”

Shawano/Bonduel took the lead 49-44 by taking first, third and fourth in the 100 freestyle. Ali Hanson, who holds the school record in both freestyle events, finished first with a time of 53.61, beating out Sturgeon Bay’s Marissa Ehlers (57.60). Ailysh Tetting took third and Whitney Banker was fourth, giving the Hawks an 11-point boost.

Perhaps Ali Hanson’s best performance was in the 200 freestyle relay, where she erased an almost 2-second Sturgeon Bay lead in the final leg. She swam her leg in 24.32, which was faster than her 50 freestyle record of 24.35. Shawano/Bonduel (1:49.25) ended up beating Sturgeon Bay by 1.95 seconds in the event.

“We count on her to do that,” coach Hanson said. “That was a big turning point for our whole meet. Those relays are double points.”

Clare Martell, a junior two-time state qualifier, won the 100 breaststroke by 15.20 seconds.

Carlie Hinnefeld and Aiylsh Tetting got the two top spots in the 100 backstroke for the Hawks, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Tetting, Hinnefeld, Hanson and Alyssa Anker won that event.

Freshman Lydia Colon was injured, but Samantha Leiser moved up from junior varsity for the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

“That was a major part of us not having a scratch, which would have meant we lost points,” coach Hanson said. “She’s a sophomore, and she did a really good job.”

Hawks suffer first Bay loss

Tue, 09/16/2014 - 11:10pm
Moving goalie to offense doesn’t helpBy:

[email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Sajen Knueppel tends the Hawks’ goal during Tuesday’s home match against Luxemburg-Casco. Shawano lost, 5-0.
Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior Braden Mueller (12) tries to cross the ball while Luxemburg-Casco defender Owen Zuleger pursues during a Bay Conference match Tuesday in Shawano.

An aggressive Luxemburg-Casco team was more than the Shawano Community High School soccer team could handle in a 5-0 Bay Conference loss Tuesday in Shawano.

Shawano (2-5, 2-1 Bay) was swarmed by Luxemburg-Casco forwards most of the game. Senior Sajen Knueppel racked up 14 saves in Shawano’s goal.

“He made a couple of mistakes in there himself,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “We made a couple mistakes on defense that caused them, as well. It’s not completely his fault.”

Down 3-0 with 15 minutes left to play, Croschere pulled Knueppel out of the goal to play midfield to spark some offense. The plan backfired, though, as the Spartans continued to get shots on goal, scoring twice against replacement goalie Sam Boivin, who also had four saves.

“Pulling defense to push for more offense,” Croschere said. “We gave up a few goals there at the end.”

Ten minutes into the match, Luxemburg-Casco (7-1-2, 2-1-1 Bay) struck first with an unassisted goal by junior Malaki Wessel. L-C struck again with 6:51 left in the first half, when junior Salvador Garcia sent a fastball right up the Shawano middle. Knueppel managed to get to it with a leap but managed only to slow the ball’s momentum, and it rolled into the net.

In the second half, Luxemburg-Casco scored with 23:39 left when senior Jake Hakari got past Shawano defenders and then sent a ball past Knueppel to the back of the net.

The Spartans took a 4-0 lead with 10:45 left to play on a corner kick by Garcia that was headed in by senior Austin Nellis. Luxemburg-Casco’s final goal came when Nellis had a breakaway with 9:56 to play.

Shawano got some offensive pressure early in the second half, but Luxemburg-Casco held firm.

“We were moving the ball a little bit better, talking some more, and that helped a little bit,” Croschere said. “If we would have played that way in the first half, it might have been a different game in the end.”

The Hawks will have Wednesday to review their mistakes before closing out the week with two conference games, at Marinette on Thursday and at home against Seymour on Friday.

“This was a good gauge for us as to how we’re going to do the rest of the way in conference,” Croschere said. “We’ll see where it lies from here. We’re going to watch the tape, see what we did, and go from there.”

Gillett too strong for Eagles

Tue, 09/16/2014 - 10:04pm
Menominee Indian loses 59-0By:

Jason Arndt, [email protected]

The Gillett Secondary School football team took advantage of four interceptions en route to a 53-0 halftime lead Saturday at Menominee Indian High School.

While the Eagles held Gillett to six points in the second half, the offense never got untracked in the 59-0 nonconference drubbing.

Senior Matt Peterson said the Tigers went into the game wanting to apply pressure on Menominee Indian’s freshman quarterback, Avery Corn, who threw four interceptions in the first half before being replaced by senior Domonic Caldwell.

“That is always the game plan, early on,” Peterson said. “With this team we were really concerned about their passing game, so we really practiced with that a lot.”

Eagles coach Chris Clache said he still has confidence in Corn.

“He had a rough first half, and he will bounce back. He will be my starter next week,” Clache said. “He is a freshman and got a little rattled. He is good at times, but he just had a rough game.”

Corn’s interceptions were just four of Menominee Indian’s seven turnovers that helped create a 53-0 halftime deficit.

“We are not designed to come from behind that far. There are no plays that can counter that,” Clache said.

Gillett coach Rick Kamps said the Tigers knew they needed to control the line of scrimmage and contain Eagles running back Alphonso Smith.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior was held to 37 yards rushing on 11 carries for Menominee Indian (0-4, 0-2 Northern Lakes).

“There were times when we ran the ball pretty well,” Clache said, “but they kind of shut down our passing game. … We had some new guys in different positions. … It kind of snowballed from there.”

Junior running back Bryan Madosh had three carries for 25 of the Eagles’ 76 rushing yards.

Monte Noffke had another big game for Gillett (4-0, 2-0 Marinette & Oconto Conference), scoring four touchdowns, bringing his season total to 11, despite missing last week’s game due to a concussion.

The 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior had a 48-yard scoring run in the first quarter, plus TD runs of 7, 6 and 2 yards, all in the opening half. He finished with 121 yards on 13 carries.

Junior quarterback Alex Zeitler completed five passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns, including a 50-yard connection with senior running back Akeem Bates with seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

“Zeitler had a great game, again,” Kamps said. “When throwing the ball, he has not turned the ball over. He is phenomenal. I cannot say enough about him.”

Two of the TD passes went to Peterson, who had two catches for 61 yards and two rushes for 14 yards. Peterson also scored on a 36-yard interception return.

Corn (5-foot-11, 150 pounds) completed six passes for 55 yards before being replaced by Caldwell.

The Shawano Community High School volleyball team finished third at its invitational Saturday, losing to Oconto Falls in the championship bracket’s semifinal match but rebounding to beat Clintonville in the third-place match.

Rhinelander topped Oconto Falls in the championship match.

Shawano (10-9, 1-0 Bay Conference) was undefeated heading into the semifinal game against Oconto Falls. The Hawks were even at 20-20 in the first game before Oconto Falls went on a 5-1 run to close out the set. Shawano played better in the second game, taking it 25-20. In the tiebreaker, the Hawks found themselves down 7-5, rallied for a 9-7 lead but went on to lose the game, 15-12, and the match.

“I think we should have probably pulled it out,” Shawano coach Jean Wolff said. “Those are the types of games we need to learn how to win because winning is a mental thing. They’re learning that right now.”

In the third-place match against Clintonville (6-13, 1-2 Eastern Valley), Shawano went ahead 16-9 on its way to a 25-18 victory. The second game was closer, eventually tying at 24-24. The Hawks won, 26-24.

Shawano had beaten Clintonville (25-22, 25-18) in pool play earlier in the day.

“It’s sometimes easy to let down when you play a team a second time,” Wolff said. “I was happy to see that my girls didn’t. That was nice.”

Shawano also beat Oconto (25-22, 25-23) and Peshtigo (25-19, 25-22) in pool play.

Junior Erika Dunnam led Shawano in the tourney with 38 kills, 14 blocks, 24 digs and six aces. Junior setter Annelies Young had 77 assists. Senior Courtney Vomastic had 24 kills and 29 digs.

Clintonville took second in its pool, beating Oconto (17-25, 25-21, 15-13) and Peshtigo (25-21, 25-21). In the semifinal, the Truckers faced Rhinelander, taking the eventual champions to three games (21-25, 25-18, 8-15).

“I’m very happy with the way we played today,” Clintonville coach Lance Bagstad said. “We came out today and hustled hard. We’ve been kind of on a roller-coaster, up and down with our energy. We came out well and played hard today.”

Nice weather, sloppy course for Shawano invite

Mon, 09/15/2014 - 6:36am
More than 700 runners competeBy:

Bonduel High School senior Travis Wollenberg kicks down the stretch during Saturday’s Shawano Invitational cross-country meet.
Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School junior Kristy Kurtz runs to the finish line Saturday during the Shawano Invitational at the school.

Rain on Friday made for a muddy course, but Saturday’s weather was perfect for the more than 700 cross-country runners competing in the Shawano Invitational at Shawano Community High School.

“It was good. I like the weather, definitely,” said Travis Wollenberg, a senior who led Bonduel with a 15th-place finish.

The condition of the course was evident in the mud on the runners at the finish line.

“It was a sloppy course,” Shawano coach Steve Stomberg said. “There were a lot of kids out there running, sometimes if you get behind a pack of kids, as rough as the course was today, it’s tough to pass them up and get ahead of the pack.”

The number of racers would have been higher, but many teams had students opt to take ACT tests Saturday, instead of taking the test Oct. 25, the same day as cross-country sectionals.

Injuries were also a factor. The Shawano girls, who finished 20th, were without leading runner Teagan Monfils.

Bonduel, because of injuries and tests, was without three of its top eight boys and two of the top six girls.

“We’re a little undermanned,” Bonduel coach Jim Watry said. “You just have to deal with whoever can show up to the meet.”

Boys

Shawano finished sixth with a team score of 202. Austin Lhotka finished in 18:02 to take 19th place. Jake Klister came in 31st, finishing in 18:18.

Wollenberg had the best time of any of the area boys and his best time of the season, as did all of Bonduel’s runners.

“Everybody on our team had their season-best time today,” Watry said. “You can’t ask for anything more than that.”

The Bears took 12th with a team score of 288.

Girls

Junior Kristy Kurtz led the Hawks with a time of 22:47, placing 65th.

“Our girls are making strides,” Stomberg said. “They’re improving. We just have to get them healthy. Teagan (Monfils) being out for a few weeks, it’s tough. We have some kids coming up and they’re pushing each other.”

Sophomores Sophia Holstrum (100, 24:03), Savannah Johnson (116, 24:48) and Hannah Williams (123, 25:20) finished second, fourth and fifth for Shawano, respectively.

The Bonduel girls team finished 15th with a score of 407. Sophomore Anna Palmer finished 31st with a time of 21:38 to lead the team.

Marion sophomore Delaney Greene-Gretz had the top local time in the girls race, finishing 10th in 20:48.

Bears run over, around and through Witt-Birn

How do you bounce back after a tough conference loss? That’s the question the Bonduel High School football team answered this week and Wittenberg-Birnamwood will have to answer next week, after Bonduel steamrolled the Chargers, 61-0, Friday night in Bonduel.

“I was happy to see our kids come back and play a good game after last week,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said. “We felt we gave a few things away last week. So it was good to come back and take care of business.”

By whatever measure, Friday’s game was lopsided.

There was the score, 61-0, with a 42-0 first-half performance by the Bears.

On offense, Bonduel (3-1, 1-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) had 507 yards; Wittenberg-Birnamwood had just 74.

The Bears rushed 36 times for 496 yards, led by tailback Hunter VanderLinden, a 5-foot-11, 215-pound senior. He had 13 carries for 192 yards, which included a 75-yard run in the first quarter and a pair of second-quarter scores.

Senior running back Dan Tauchen (6-2, 165 pounds) added a pair of touchdowns — one from 34 yards out in the second quarter and another in the third from 6 yards out — and 118 yards on 11 carries.

Senior running back Hunter Berry (5-6, 125 pounds) had three carries for 86 yards, including a 69-yard run and a 2-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Berry also had an interception of Wittenberg-Birnamwood quarterback William Switalla in the second quarter, recovered a fumble on the Chargers’ first possession and had a big punt return in the second quarter.

Westrich said he is pleased with his three senior running backs’ performance so far this season.

“It’s nice to see,” Westrich said. “They’re starting to gel. They’re running their fakes well, working hard for each other. They’re really coming together.”

The backups continued the Bears’ rushing performance in the second half. Junior running back Blake Stoss had a 37-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He finished with four carries for 88 yards. Josh Richter, a sophomore running back, had a 28-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring in the fourth quarter.

“It’s nice to see, top to bottom, kids, when their number is called, they’re focused on getting the job done,” Westrich said.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood (1-2, 1-1 CWC-8) rushed the ball 38 times for 56 yards. Sophomore Alex Peplinski had nine carries for 34 yards to lead the Chargers. Switalla finished 1 of 10 passing for 18 yards and an interception.

Bonduel quarterback Colton Dobratz (6-0, 160 pounds) scrambled for a 19-yard touchdown in the first quarter and connected with senior receiver Connor Rosin (6-2, 195 pounds) on an 12-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

The Bonduel defense forced the Chargers to punt six times and turn the ball over on downs twice, and created three turnovers.

A persistent rain throughout the game might have contributed to five fumbles, three by the Bears, including a mishandled punt by Berry, which might have been the only blemish to the win.

West De Pere crushes Hawks

Fri, 09/12/2014 - 11:03pm
Henning has 130 yards rushingBy:

Leader Staff

Shawano outscored West De Pere 7-0 in the second half of Friday’s Bay Conference high school football game in De Pere.

Unfortunately, the Hawks gave up 49 points in the first half and fell 49-7 to the undefeated Phantoms.

“We knew West De Pere was going to be tough,” Shawano coach Al Tomow said. “They are always a contender for conference.”

West De Pere (4-0, 4-0 Bay Conference) held the Hawks scoreless until the start of the fourth quarter when senior running back Chase Henning scored on a 17-yard touchdown run. Henning finished with 130 yards on 23 carries as the Hawks rushed for 203 yards.

“Chase’s confidence is starting to grow and he is beginning to understand the offense,” Tomow said.

Shawano relied heavily on the running game because of the rain and wet field conditions, Tomow said.

Senior quarterback Cole Huntington completed eight passes for 89 yards. The team’s leading receiver was senior Zack Sousek, who snagged five of Huntington’s passes for 61 yards.

Tomow said Shawano (2-2, 1-2 Bay) is making progress.

“I am really proud of the way we played tonight,” he said. “We got to play really good football.”

No West De Pere statistics were available.

Truckers, Wildcats get chippy in close game

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Clintonville High School midfielder Blake Hauser (19) tries to gain control of the ball against Gresham/Bowler defenders Levi Ludvigsen (11) and Dustin Tomas (13). The teams battled to a 1-1 draw.

A close score led to a lot of contact in a 1-1 draw between Gresham/Bowler and Clintonville in a nonconference high school soccer match Thursday in Clintonville.

Gresham/Bowler freshman Todd Ortradovec gave the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage 4 minutes, 35 seconds into the match, scoring when the ball popped out of a scrum in front of the Clintonville goal.

“He picked up some loose trash and put it in the back of the net,” Gresham/Bowler coach Nate Boucher said. “He’s my outside halfback, that’s what I told him that his job is. Anything that slips through, he takes care of it. He did a good job.”

With about 28 minutes left in the first half, Clintonville (4-2-1, 2-2 Eastern Valley) tied the game when Paul Kenfield, a senior forward who leads the Truckers in scoring, found the net.

“That was just a ball that got to the corner. He was trying to cross it and it went in for us,” Clintonville coach Roger Lupien said. “He’s had a good season.”

The 1-1 tie would stand the final 73 minutes of the increasingly testy match.

“We haven’t gone through that all year,” Lupien said. “We got a bunch of kids hurt, leg injuries. It was a chippy game. Guys in the green shirts didn’t have control very long.

“I think we started to react. We felt we got some shoves early. It just cascaded from there, unfortunately. We didn’t play a lot of soccer this afternoon. We played a lot of kickball, a lot of push. It wasn’t fun to watch.”

In the final minute of the game, the Truckers had one last chance when senior midfielder Blake Hauser got an open shot, but it was wide left.

“We had good shots, we just had poor angles and we whiffed a few,” Lupien said. “We had some really good opportunities in the first half and shanked them off to the side. We’ve played better offensively up until today. They took us out of what we do best. Congrats to them.”

Freshman goal keeper Drew Haffner was solid throughout the match for Gresham/Bowler (3-2-2). He had eight saves, while Clintonville had 18 shots on goal.

“He’s done a tremendous job this year,” Boucher said. “There’s a couple of games that a couple got through, but he’s still a freshman, he’s still learning. He’s been doing a great job for us.”

As for the draw and physicality of the game, Boucher will take it.

“A tie is always better than a loss,” Boucher said. “The boys played hard. They didn’t back down any. It was a very physical game. That’s the way the game ends up being sometimes.”

Junior Bob McCoy had 11 saves in goal for the Truckers.

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Gresham Community High School senior Brianna Stehberger, left, and Menominee Indian senior Sasha Peters battle at the net during a game Tuesday in Keshena. Menominee Indian won, 3-1.

A battle between senior middle hitters went back and forth Tuesday night in Keshena before the Menominee Indian High School volleyball team beat Gresham 3-1 to open Central Wisconsin Conference-10 play.

“The girls are awesome,” Menominee Indian coach Colette White said. “I’m excited for this year. It’s a young team.”

Trailing 1-0 after Menominee Indian took the first game 25-21, Gresham senior middle hitter Brianna Stehberger had a spike to end the second game 25-23.

“Our girls never gave up,” Gresham coach Tim Wild said. “It was hot in here tonight, and they worked until the very end.”

Menominee Indian senior middle hitter Sasha Peters answered Stehberger’s game-winner with a game-winner of her own in the third game. Menominee Indian won it 25-23 on Peters’ hit.

“When she has her timing down, she’s awesome, she knows it,” White said. “She listens, she looks for advice. She’ll be a great player this year.”

After leading 5-1 early in the fourth game, Menominee Indian fell behind 10-6. Late in the game, a Stehberger spike gave Gresham (1-1, 0-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) the lead at 24-20.

Menominee Indian (0-1, 0-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) scored the next four points, three coming on senior Leah Schlichting’s serves, to tie it at 24-24. The two teams traded points, then Menominee Indian won it 27-25 on a bump by Schlichting.

“They knew they could do it,” White said. “They knew they could beat them. It was all up to them.”

“I give Menominee Indian credit,” Wild said. “They had some good serves and that threw us off. They definitely wore us down as the night went on.”

The Eagles took a 10-2 lead in the first game on Monae Waukau’s serving. Gresham climbed back into the game, closing to within 14-13. Gresham led the second game throughout, taking an early 8-2 lead. The third game was even throughout.

“It was a match of spurts all night long,” Wild said. “We got in a hole that first game. That hurt us. We had some good runs. Our girls fought back and stayed in the game.”

Stehberger finished the match with six kills. Junior Tatelyn Ferguson had five kills. Nande Carroll had 10 assists and 10 service points.
