Dalton Parson captured first and two Hawks finished third as the Shawano Community High School wrestling team finished fifth Saturday at the Trocat Scramble at Green Bay West.

Parson recorded four pins at 132 pounds: Kevin Staron, of Menomonee Falls, in 5 minutes, 17 seconds; Ethan Pfister, of Appleton East, in 3:04; Wyatt Steston, of Green Bay Preble, in 1:44; and Marc Krentz, of Berlin, in 44 seconds. In the championship match, he scored a decision over Chris Ronsman, of Green Bay West/Southwest.

Coach Michael Homan said Parson, despite dealing with a knee injury, “was able to perform one of his best outings this season.”

Wyatt Welch and Danny Darling each placed third for Shawano.

At 106 pounds, Welch scored victories over Jordan Weinkauf, of Berlin, by pin, in 2:30; Zach Wauters, of Peshtigo, 15-2 major decision; and Kollen Kellner, of Appleton East, by pin, in 3:23.

Darling’s key win was a 9-0 major decision over Mike Elliot, of Green Bay Preble.

Shawn Bell (138) placed fourth for the Hawks. Shawano’s fifth-place finishers were Austin Oreskovic (126), Jarrett Laatsch (145), Jacob Sacket (170) and Paul Wilber (220).

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School senior guard Zack Sousek gets by Menasha defender Tyler Johnson during Shawano’s 51-42 win Friday in Shawano.

Helped by back-to-back 3s by seniors Braden Mueller and Jack Lacy, the Shawano Community High School boys basketball team built an 8-1 lead in the opening minutes of Friday’s Bay Conference game against visiting Menasha.

Shawano (8-2, 4-2 Bay) would lead the rest of the game, winning, 51-42, and weathering a late rally by Menasha (4-6, 1-4) that cut the Hawks’ lead to just three, 43-40, with 3:50 to play.

Shawano hit seven of its eight 3-pointers in the first half, including four in the second quarter.

Mueller, a 6-foot guard, had three first-half 3s. Lacy, a 6-5 forward, had two in the first quarter. Eric Carl, a 6-1 freshman guard, hit another pair of 3s in the second quarter.

“That’s something we’re working on, 3s in the transition,” Shawano coach Chris Kellett said. “I thought in the first quarter we had six, seven 3s that were uncontested based off of Zack (Sousek) driving and kicking. Braden Mueller and Jack Lacy capitalized off of it.”

Zeke Gueths, a 6-6 junior center, got in on the perimeter shooting with a 3 in the third quarter. Gueths led Shawano with 13 points.

Sousek finished with eight points and five assists. Adam Bartz had five rebounds.

Shawano’s shooting would slow in the second half, however, and Menasha refused to go away. Led by 6-4 senior forward Tyler Johnson’s relentless work inside, the Bluejays were able to cut Shawano’s lead to just three in the fourth quarter.

“We had a tough matchup physically against them,” Kellett said. “Tyler Johnson and Emanuel Jenkins are the two best athletes in our league. Some guys had to guard out of position. Tyler Johnson had a phenomenal second half to keep them in it.”

Johnson led all scorers with 20 points. Jenkins was limited to six points.

“Fortunately for us, we got the ball down low late in the fourth quarter, after we missed a bunch of 3s, and got Zeke more involved and that kind of sprung us,” Kellett said.

Shawano finished 8 of 21 on 3-pointers and shot 46 percent overall. Menasha made 40 percent of its shots.

Gresham boys rout Bowler

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Gresham Community High School senior forward James Kazik goes up for a rebound during Thursday’s game against visiting Bowler. Gresham won, 68-39.

The Gresham Community High School boys basketball team led 36-19 at halftime of Thursday’s Central Wisconsin Conference-10 game against Bowler, but turned up the pressure in the third quarter to go on and swamp the Panthers 68-39.

Undefeated Gresham (9-0, 6-0 CWC-10) outscored Bowler 25-6 after coming out of the locker room at the half.

Gresham coach Jeff Zobeck wasn’t happy with the 10-point lead his team opened up in the first quarter, at one point in the second quarter subbing all five of his players on the court to express his displeasure.

“We didn’t bring the energy,” Zobeck said. “We just wanted to execute better and we weren’t executing.”

“In stretches we played well,” Bowler coach Ted Kietlinski said. “In stretches we did not play well. To me, the difference in the game, even though we were down 17 at half, Gresham came out and were unbelievable good starting that third quarter. … Gresham played lights-out in that third quarter. That was the difference.”

Gresham senior Christian Haffner, coming off a record-setting 47-point performance Tuesday night, scored nine of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter, which was off his 30.5 points per game average. He opened the game with eight points and finished with four 3-pointers.

Bowler (5-4, 2-4 CWC-10) would cut into its deficit in the fourth quarter, led by Chase Nueske, who scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the period.

“He’s one of the leading rebounders in the state,” Kietlinski said. “He’s an undersized power forward or center at 6-foot-1, but he’s gotten more physical. He’s learned how to use his body inside better. This has been a nice first half of the year for him.”

Nueske leads the CWC-10 with 10.6 rebounds per game.

“One of our goals was to emphasize getting the ball in the post today,” Kietlinski said. “I don’t think we did that as well as we needed to, obviously.”

Zobeck is confident others will step up if teams commit to taking Haffner out of the game. Some of that was evident Thursday. Sophomore Neal Cerveny scored 13 points, including a trio of 3s. Freshman Drew Haffner also put in three 3s.

“Some teams are going to do things to take Christian out of it,” Zobeck said. “… Other guys got an opportunity, some of them handled that better than others.”

Senior Kalen Fischer scored six points in limited minutes in the second quarter. Senior forward James Kazik also stepped up with 11 points, four rebounds and three blocks. Senior Killian Eggert scored eight points and led the team with five rebounds.

“The big thing is to be mentally prepared,” Zobeck said. “If (a team) wants to put that much energy in to stopping Christian, I have 100 percent confidence in this team. There’s a lot of good players on it, guys that shoot it, guys that can score around the basket.”

Bowler (39)

Montez 1 4-6 7, Sanapaw 1 0-0 2, Kazik 3 0-0 6, Nueske 6 4-5 16, Strassburg 1 0-0 2, Oswald 2 0-0 6

Hawks take down West De Pere

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School junior Adam Bartz goes up for a shot against West De Pere on Tuesday in Shawano. Shawano won, 69-62.

Meet Eric Carl.

The Shawano Community High School freshman hit three 3-point shots from an empty corner Tuesday in Shawano’s 69-62 win over Bay Conference foe West De Pere.

“Zack Sousek was the catalyst tonight, and then Eric Carl took over,” Shawano coach Chris Kellett said. “This was a coming out party for Eric Carl. He’s probably our best shooter on our team, and it showed tonight.”

The Hawks were hot from outside the perimeter all night, starting with a trio of first-quarter 3s by senior guard Zack Sousek, senior forward Jack Lacy and junior center Zeke Gueths that helped get West De Pere out of its man-to-man defense.

Once that happened, the corners opened up. Carl hit a pair of 3s and senior Braden Mueller had another.

“It was a great team win,” Kellett said. “West De Pere has a ton of talent, not just Cody Schwartz, but Jesee Owens and some of those other guys.”

Carl, a 6-foot-1 guard, finished with 13 points, including three 3s. Gueths led the Hawks with 18 points and an unofficial nine rebounds. Sousek finished with 17 points.

“Zeke was our steady scorer throughout the game,” Kellett said. “I have to take my hat off to those three guys. I thought they played outstanding. Adam Bartz on the inside on Cody was tremendous as well.”

Sousek finished a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line, but his team wasn’t as good from the charity stripe.

Trailing 49-37 heading into fourth quarter, West De Pere sent Shawano to the line five times. Shawano made 6 of 12 shots as West De Pere slowly closed the gap, outscoring Shawano 25-20 in the final period.

Schwartz, a 6-8 senior forward, led the Phantoms with a game-high 22 points. He also broke the West De Pere school scoring record with 1,401 points with 3:39 left in the first quarter. Senior Jacob Bostedt added 16.

“Cody is too good of a player not to get his points,” Kellett said. “His shots were contested. He hit one 40-foot 3 tonight. You have to tip your hat to that kid if he’s that talented.”

Shawano has been playing without the services of injured senior Sajen Knueppel, but Kellett is hopeful he’ll have his athletic guard back soon.

“We’re starting to come together,” Kellett said. “We always defend, night in and night out. Our offense is starting to come around. We’re hoping to get Sajen back soon and get back in the conference race.”

The win pulled Shawano (6-2, 3-2 Bay) into a tie with West De Pere (5-4, 3-2) for third place in the Bay, behind undefeated Seymour (7-1, 4-0) and Luxemburg-Casco (8-1, 4-0)

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Gresham Community High School sophomore Neal Cerveny drives with the ball against Goodman-Pembine during Saturday’s championship game of the Gresham Booster Club Holiday Tournament. Gresham won, 61-42.

A flurry of 3-pointers fell early and often Saturday to lift the Gresham Community High School boys basketball team to a 61-42 win over Goodman-Pembine in the championship game of the Gresham Booster Club Holiday Tournament in Gresham.

Gresham’s first three baskets were from beyond the 3-point arc. Senior guard Christian Haffner — who scored 29 points Friday night in a win over Menominee Indian — hit four first-half 3-pointers. Freshman Drew Haffner and sophomore Neal Cerveny each added 3s of their own in the first half as the Wildcats (7-0, 5-0 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) built a 33-21 lead.

“I don’t think we played our best game,” Gresham coach Jeff Zobeck said. “I thought we probably played a little better in the first half yesterday that we did all night tonight, but we did enough.”

Goodman-Pembine (5-2, 4-0 Northern Lakes Conference) hit four 3-pointers in the first half, and went on a 12-5 run midway through the second quarter to pull within 26-18.

Gresham’s defense was happy to give up the outside shooting to stop the Patriots from getting shots inside.

“I hate to play zone,” Zobeck said. “We knew it was going to be a problem stopping their penetration. … We gave up some 3s, we don’t like to do that either. It seemed like the lesser of two evils tonight.”

The Patriots adjusted to take away outside shots in the second half, but that opened things up inside for Gresham.

Haffner scored 15 of his 31 points in the second half, including all seven of Gresham’s fourth-quarter points. Cerveny finished with 11 points. The two were also selected for the all-tournament team.

Alex Whitt, also named to the all-tournament team, led Goodman-Pembine with 11 points, eight in the second half.

Zobeck said he wants his team to be more balanced.

“We want to get more guys in the post,” he said. “We’re going to try and get in there. We want to drive the ball a little bit more. You saw bits and pieces of it tonight. We’ll really be good when we can get a better mix and not rely on the 3 quite as much.”

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Gresham Community High School senior guard Christian Haffner drives against Menominee Indian senior Michael Pecore during the first day of the Gresham Booster Club Holiday Tournament. Gresham won, 77-48.

Christian Haffner scored 29 points as he and the rest of the Gresham Community High School boys basketball team overwhelmed Menominee Indian 77-48 Friday night to advance to the championship game of the Gresham Booster Club Holiday Tournament in Gresham.

Haffner, a senior guard, had 14 points in the first quarter as the Wildcats jumped out to a 28-10 lead in front of a standing-room only crowd at the Gresham Community High School fieldhouse. By halftime, Gresham was up 45-21.

“We knew they were a little short-handed bench-wise,” Gresham coach Jeff Zobeck said. “We wanted to take advantage of that and run them a little bit.”

Gresham (6-0, 5-0 CWC-10) was hot from the perimeter all game. Haffner hit a pair of 3s in the first period. Freshman guard Drew Haffner and sophomore guard Neal Cerveny each added a 3 in the third quarter. Gresham would finish the game with seven 3s.

“There were some thing we could have cleaned up in there,” Zobeck said, “but I think we played as good a first half as we’ve played.”

Despite not scoring for the first 4:30 minutes of the second half, Menominee Indian (4-2, 3-2 CWC-10) outscored Gresham 12-11 in the third quarter. Gresham shut the door with a 21-15 fourth quarter.

Cerveny finished with 14 points.

Forward Domonic Caldwell led Menominee Indian with 14 points.

Gresham set up extra bleachers on the stage next to the court for the game to accommodate the extra crowd.

“(Menominee Indian) is a solid team,” Zobeck said. “Playing at home, playing in the holiday tournament were pretty big factors. The turnout with a great crowd, it was great to see the guys respond.”

Gresham will play Goodman-Pembine, who beat Oneida Nation 42-41 earlier in the day, in the boys varsity championship Saturday.

Menominee Indian will face Coleman, which beat Oneida Nation 40-20 earlier in the day, in the girls varsity championship game Saturday.

“We did some things that we’ve been working on during Christmas break,” Menominee Indian coach Chris Rice said. “It started to pan out for us. … It’s really all coming together for us right now.”

The Eagles (7-0, 6-0 CWC-10) jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter. Four of the starting five each hit a couple of baskets.

Menominee Indian clamped down on defense in the second half, allowing only seven points after leading 28-15 at halftime.

The Eagles were led by junior forward Ania Smith, who earned five of her 11 points at the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Autumn Chevalier added 10 points.

Smith and senior forwards Sasha Peters and Joan Waukau used their size advantage in the paint against the smaller Gresham players. Gresham was also having depth issues.

“We had a hard time matching up with the size,” Gresham coach Nick Yaeger said. “We had six girls, one had a bad wrist, we had some sickness going around, it doesn’t help. I wish we had some more bodies. (Menominee Indian) is a good team. They’re undefeated for a reason.”

Sophomore guard Sydney Jensen led Gresham (1-6, 0-6 CWC-10) with a game-high 12 points, eight in the first half.

Rice said he likes the tournament format.

“You’re trying to be the first-place team. You’re trying to compete at a high level,” Rice said. “I think we’re doing it. It’s a good little situation for us here playing teams like Gresham, who is in our conference, and then Coleman, who is in our regional.”

In junior varsity action, Menominee Indian beat Bowler, 28-17, and Coleman beat Menominee Indian C-Team 36-16.

Bonduel basketball team off to hot start

Fri, 01/02/2015 - 8:22am
Seniors aiming for CWC-8 titleBy:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

It wasn’t long after the Bonduel High School boys basketball team won its first two nonconference games that the players, led by the seniors, got together and wrote down their season goals.

No. 1 on everyone’s list? Finish No. 1 in the Central Wisconsin Conference-8.

The seven seniors on the squad want to finish their careers on top. Bonduel, which last won the conference title in 2011-12, was picked preseason to finish fifth this year in the conference race.

“That’s one of our motivations that we feel like we deserve better than that and we’re going to try to prove it on the floor,” Bonduel coach Duke Copp said.

Early in the season, Bonduel is surprising everybody with its success. The Bears opened with six straight wins and have climbed the state rankings, sitting at No. 7 in Division 4 in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll. Bonduel (6-1) is tied atop the conference standings with Iola-Scandinavia at 3-0, as of Dec. 31.

“People weren’t expecting us to come out and play this good,” guard Hunter Vanderlinden said. “I think we surprised ourselves a little bit. We’ve just got to keep it going.”

The majority of the seniors — Vanderlinden, Connor Rosin, Colton Dobratz, Austin Marcks, Hunter Barry, Jacob Springborn and Garret Riemer — have played together since they were in third or fourth grade. When they were freshman, they went 20-2 at the junior varsity level. The players had a good feel that by the time their senior year rolled around, they’d have a strong team.

“We knew we’d be small, but we knew our quickness was there and we’d have a good chance,” said Rosin, who is in his third year as a starting guard.

Six of the top eight scorers for Bonduel this season are seniors, led by Rosin (12.7 points per game) and Dobratz (12.4). Vanderlinden is fourth on the team (7.7).

Copp has been teaching at Bonduel for five years and has been the varsity coach for two years. He couldn’t wait to coach the players after really starting to notice how solid the senior class was early in their high school careers.

The seniors are trying to carry over the success they had on junior varsity.

“It’s just another level. We’ve just got to bring more intensity now than we did back then,” Vanderlinden said. “But we learned how to do that, and we’re doing good.”

Having played together for so many years, the guys have created a strong bond on and off the court. They’re friends who like to play pick-up basketball together during the offseason and Xbox during their downtime in one of their families’ basements.

Rosin loves playing with all his senior teammates and friends.

“It means a lot for me,” he said. “I’ve been playing ball since first grade, but third grade organized. It means a lot to me every time I step out onto the court with those guys. It’s really special.”

The solid relationships away from the court help build a tighter team on the floor.

“We have great chemistry,” Rosin said. “It’s awesome we can play together as well as we do.”

Chemistry is the key.

“We know what we’re going to do, know where we’re going to cut, know where we’re going to pass,” said Dobratz, a two-year starter along with Vanderlinden.

The seniors tend to lead by example and let their games speak for themselves.

“They’re just nice kids and they’re not in-your-face and loud type of people at all,” Copp said. “I would like them to be a little more vocal at times.”

The Bonduel seniors sure are outspoken about their goals in their final year.

“It’d be awesome to win a conference title,” Rosin said. “I’d love to go out on that note. State would be cool, too, but conference would be awesome.”

Lions ice fishing derby traditionally 1st of seasonBy:

Leader Photo by Jason Arndt Taylor Luepke, 12, and her 19-year-old brother, Jake, discuss a 29-inch northern pike their father, Jason, caught Saturday during the 46th annual Bonduel Lions Club Fishing Derby at Sparky’s Sunset Grill in Shawano.

Mid-December’s mild temperatures did not deter ice fishing enthusiasts from venturing onto Shawano Lake for the 46th annual Bonduel Lions Club Fishing Derby on Saturday.

Participants reported the ice was at least 10 inches thick. The temperature was a balmy, for ice fishing, 34 degrees as light snow fell throughout the early hours.

Cullin Kowalczyk, of Cecil, won two categories, with the heaviest walleye and crappie, and Jon Laude caught the derby’s biggest fish, a northern pike that weighed in at 9.64 pounds.

The derby is traditionally the first of the season on Shawano Lake. Participation was about the same as previous years, according to organizers.

Jason Luepke, of Bonduel, fished with his 12-year-old daughter, Taylor, and 19-year-old son, Jake. Luepke caught three northern pike, with the largest weighing nearly 5 pounds — not enough to place in the derby.

But Luepke and others said ice fishing is about more than the catch.

“It is more of a camaraderie,” Luepke said. “We play cards and some people smoke venison steak. That is what we like to do on the ice.”

Longtime Bonduel Lions Club member Jerry Buchholz, 63, said he enjoys a good game of Sheepshead on the ice.

“The camaraderie where we play Sheepshead… can be just as fun as the fishing,” he said.

Luepke said fishing also gives him bonding time with his children.

Taylor has been fishing since she was 7 and loves to go hunting and fishing with him, Luepke said.

“Just watching her do stuff that I don’t have to worry about anymore, that’s a big accomplishment,” Luepke said. “She can catch the fish, and I don’t have to worry about baiting her hook or doing anything else, and I am hoping that she sticks with it.”

Luepke and others at the derby said they had no concerns about the ice being safe.

“We had that cold spell (in November), and this was probably the earliest that I have ever been on the ice in many years,” Luepke said. “It made really good, solid ice right from the start.

“Right now it is safe out there, but I don’t know if it is safe all over the lake for driving conditions. I would say no.”

The ice should be at least 12 inches thick to drive on, according to Luepke and others.

Proceeds collected by the Lions Club during the fishing derby will go toward community projects, including scholarships and assisting with the Wisconsin State Lions Camp, which draws 1,500 to 1,800 youth who are either blind, hearing impaired or are battling juvenile diabetes.

Hawks rally to beat Ashwaubenon

Gueths leads Shawano with 20 pointsBy:

Photo by Josh Thompson Shawano Community High School junior Zeke Gueths takes a shot against Ashwaubenon during Tuesday’s session of the Sun Drop Shootout at the Kress Events Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Shawano won, 48-42.

The Hawks hung around just long enough.

The Shawano Community High School boys basketball team stayed with Ashwaubenon for three quarters and then went to work. Shawano used a 9-0 run to start the fourth and then never trailed again en route to a 48-42 victory Tuesday night in the Sun Drop Shootout at the Kress Events Center on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

“We had some good looks not fall in the first half. We missed five, six layups,” Shawano coach Chris Kellett said. “We kept telling the kids, ‘Keep getting them. They’re going to start to fall.’

“Zeke (Gueths) worked his butt off tonight sealing guys down low and he got fouled probably 10 times. I have to tip my cap to Zeke. I thought he was fantastic tonight.”

Ashwaubenon entered the game ranked No. 8 in Division 2 in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll.

“This is a huge win,” said Gueths, who finished with 20 points. “We came off a close game against Green Bay West, and this is the spark we needed to continue. We’ve got some momentum and we’re ready to get the next one.”

Neither team shot well from the field – Shawano 13 for 33 (39 percent) and Ashwaubenon 15 for 48 (31 percent), including 3 for 16 from 3-point range.

Shawano did a solid job containing Jaguars star Kyle Monroe. The senior scored 20 points, but was only 6 for 18 from the field.

“Our goal was to make him work as hard as he had to get buckets,” Kellett said. “Adam Bartz, who doesn’t start for us, came in and ended up guarding him for three-fourths of the game. Kyle Monroe played pretty well, but I thought Adam Bartz held him in check for the most part.”

Ashwaubenon coach John Miron thought his team was sluggish all night.

“Even in that first quarter when we had a decent lead, we were just sluggish offensively,” Miron said. “Shawano did a good job getting it low to (Gueths). When we sagged down, they kicked out and hit some good shots. We have to find some other people besides Kyle that can carry us. Hats off to them, they played good D and we didn’t.”

Ashwaubenon (4-3, 2-1 Fox River Classic Conference) jumped out to a 7-0 before Kellett called a timeout to settle down his guys. Down 10-2, Shawano (5-2, 2-2 Bay Conference) hit its first field of the game as Braden Mueller hit a jumper with 1:57 remaining in the first quarter.

The Jaguars led 12-4 after the first quarter and upped their advantage to 10, 16-6. Shawano responded with a 7-0 run as Gueths hit back-to-back field goals and Mueller hit a 3-pointer to get the Hawks back into it.

Up by double digits, Ashwaubenon had a chance to pull away, but Shawano wouldn’t let that happen.

“That was huge,” Kellett said. “Any time shots start to fall and the momentum kicks in, your defense and kids play harder. Braden (Mueller) hit a 3 there to get us going. Once that happened, we calmed down and started playing our style of basketball.”

With Ashwaubenon clinging to a 20-18 lead, Shawano had two chances to either tie or go ahead, but the Jaguars went into half up 22-18.

Shawano trailed by three in the third quarter when Jack Lacy hit his second of two 3-pointers to tie the game at 26-26. With the Hawks down 1, Gueths got a putback hoop inside to get their first lead of the game, 31-30, with 1:47 remaining in the third quarter.

Ashwaubenon reclaimed the lead by the end of the third to go up 32-31. Shawano started the fourth on a 9-0 run as Gueths scored six points and Zach Sousek added three to make it 40-32 at the 5 1/2-minute mark. Sousek hit six straight free throws in the final 1:30, and Ashwaubenon could only get within five points late.

“We all did what we could to try to grab the lead,” Gueths said. “I can’t do my job with the guards bringing the ball up the court, and it was a team win.”

Sousek finished with nine points and Lacy had six on the two key 3-pointers.

“Jack’s able to do that, and I think that’s what really stretched the defense a little bit, which opened it up for Zeke down low,” Kellett said. “We don’t really have one single guy that can score 20 for us, but Zeke did tonight.”

Kellett is hoping the win gets his team back on track as Shawano gets into the heart of the Bay Conference schedule next week.

“We’ve just got to go game by game,” Kellett said. “It’s a very long season and we’ve got Sturgeon Bay on Saturday. Any team is capable of beating anybody on any night, and we’ve got to keep improving day by day, and hopefully by the end of the year we’re playing our best ball.”

Bonduel suffers first loss of season

Wed, 12/31/2014 - 7:23am
Bears fall to Oconto at ShootoutBy:

Greg Bates, Leader Correspondent

After winning its first six games of the season, the Bonduel High School boys basketball team finally met its match.

Oconto broke a 34-34 tie early in the third quarter with a 16-4 run, and the Bears could never recover. The Bears only got within nine points in the final quarter and fell 72-56 Monday afternoon in the Sun Drop Shootout at the Kress Events Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Bonduel (6-1, 3-0 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) entered the game at No. 7 in Division 4 in the latest WisSports.net Coaches Poll and was riding high this season, eking out three wins by four points or fewer.

Bonduel coach Duke Copp said an early-season loss could benefit his team.

“As a coach, I see the positives to this,” Copp said. “With some of those games we won, we could have easily lost, and now we just realize we’re not going undefeated, and let’s just go back and play.”

It was just a tough day shooting for Bonduel. The Bears were just 2 for 17 from 3-point range, and those two field goals came in the opening quarter.

“We couldn’t make any shots. We couldn’t make shots when we needed them,” said Bonduel senior Colton Dobratz, who finished with seven points. “Turnovers hurt us, too.”

“I think they just played with more energy than we did, and hit shots,” Copp said. “The one kid we thought wasn’t going to make any hit four 3s and we couldn’t stop the big guy. I was disappointed with our kids’ effort today.”

Bonduel center Peyton Czarapata scored 12 first-half points, but only two in the second half.

Oconto (4-4, 2-3 Packerland) used Sawyer Koch to perfection in the second half, scoring 20 of his game-high 26 points.

Koch, who came in averaging 16 points per game, was the catalyst in Oconto’s game-changing, third-quarter run.

“The plan was, their big guy (Czarapata) had two fouls and so did Koch. I just said, ‘Let’s just get the ball inside, pound it inside,’” Oconto coach Jon Bostedt said. “’Kocher, don’t be selfish. If you have the shot, take it. If you’re point-blank range, put it in. If you’re in the high post, whoever’s at the 4 spot, don’t be afraid to step and seal or cut in on that short corner baseline for some dump downs.’ That’s actually what opened it up, and then making a few 3s, too. It kind of got them on their heels there.”

Copp believes if his players would have taken care of the ball better and were sound on defense, the third quarter wouldn’t have gotten away from Bonduel.

“We’ve been trying to pride ourselves on tough defense, and we just need to get stops,” Copp said. “We were letting the big guy catch the ball at the free-throw line and turn around and shoot it. That’s just not going to work.”

The game was tied 10-10 in the first quarter after Oconto went on a 7-0 run. Bonduel quickly answered with a 16-4 run that stretched into the middle of the second quarter. Czarapata had 10 points in the run, including two 3-point plays.

Down 26-21, Oconto went on an 11-0 spurt and took a 32-30 lead into halftime.

Bonduel tied the game at 34 early in the third quarter before Oconto went on the aforementioned 16-4 run to make it 50-38. The Blue Devils were up 54-43 at end of the third, and the Bears could only get within nine points on four occasions in the final quarter.

Bonduel’s Connor Rosin scored eight points in the fourth, and finished with 11, but it was too little too late.

Team honors ‘Coach Tommie’By:

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz The Shawano Community High School hockey team is wearing stickers to remember the team’s late coach, Tommie CarlinSchauer, who died last week after a battle with cancer.

Still mourning the death of its coach, and still looking for its first win this season, the Shawano Community High School varsity reserve hockey team lost to visiting Grafton 6-1 Friday night at the Crawford Center.

Wearing stickers on their helmets as a tribute to coach Tommie CarlinSchauer, who died last week of cancer, the Hawks (0-6) skated even with Grafton for the first and third periods. In the second period, however, Grafton put in five goals.

Shawano took the lead with 11:57 left in the first period when junior forward Blake Stoss’ shot rebounded to sophomore Aaron Lammers, who managed to get the puck past goalie Ty Barnhill.

Grafton (6-2, 0-2 North Shore Conference) got the goal back on a 5-3 advantage late in the period. Shawano played 3 minutes down two players but only gave up one goal.

“Their first goal came on our penalty kill,” said Bryon Lammers, who took over the coaching duties when CarlinSchauer was diagnosed with cancer two days before the season started. “This game, with all the penalties, was hard on us with our short bench. We can’t skate with a big team.

“They (Shawano) were doing better at the end of the first period. They came out and just expected the second period to go the same. They stopped skating and winning the races to the puck. They weren’t making an effort in their passing, and the other team jumped on top of them.”

The Hawks held Grafton scoreless in the third period.

“It was important that they came back in the second period, after being down by so many goals,” Lammers said. “They took pride in defending their home ice. … I think we did a lot better in the third, I’m proud of them for that.”

Shawano goalie Brendan Chapman had 37 saves. Barnhill had 19.

The team learned about the death of “Coach Tommie,” as he was called, from Lammers and Charmaine Schreiber, Shawano Community High School activities director, last week before a practice.

“We canceled practice that night,” said Lammers, who was approached to take over the coaching duties temporarily because he had coached this group of players at the lower levels. “Let the kids go home and process it.”

Triston Krueger, who played on the team during both of CarlinSchauer’s years coaching and is an assistant coach this season, said telling the team was difficult.

“I was just trying to not break down in front of them,” he said.

Krueger, the team’s captain last year, said the news really shocked him.

“It was really hard when I was told,” Krueger said. “It hit pretty hard.”

“It was a rough start for us,” said Lammers.
