Three Lakes Fire Department Gets New Station

THREE LAKES - After six years of waiting, Three Lakes Fire Department got their move-in notice Monday. Construction on the new fire house started in spring, but Chief Herb Stuckart said they've been building public support and raising funds for six years. The new fire house is about five miles from the main house, which means firefighters can get to the scene faster. "Time is safety, time is lifesaving," Stuckart said... Full Story: WJFW

Christmas Carolers Spread Holiday Cheer

RHINELANDER - The sounds of Christmas filled downtown Rhinelander today. Local elementary students shared their talents to spread some holiday cheer with Christmas carols. "It's something for everybody- the businesses enjoy us coming and caroling and the kids enjoy going around and singing and when we're all done the businesses have been kind enough to provide cookies and hot chocolate," said Rachel Strong, of Rhinelander Schools’ Music Department. Santa Claus Came to Town!

RHINELANDER - The big man himself, Old Saint Nicholas, paid a visit to Rhinelander today. He was ready to take requests, but before kids told Santa what they wanted for Christmas, he had to see who's been naughty, and who's been nice. Fortunately most kids were on the nice list, but not all of them were happy to see Santa. A few shed tears, but plenty climbed in his lap and shared a list of Christmas wishes. Full Story: WJFW

Jump Gets Five Years for Child Enticement

RHINELANDER - A sign of the times: as social media consumes more and more of people's lives, a Tomahawk man is now going to prison for inappropriate behavior on Facebook. "He also threatened the victim and her father," says Oneida County Assistant District Attorney Scott Moller. A seemingly dangerous man will be off the streets for half a decade. In October a jury found 23-year-old Abel Jump guilty of trying to use Facebook to get a child to have sex with him. And that's not all. "He made threats against a judge," says Moller. Facebook, Community Help in Search for Missing Dog

WOODRUFF - You know the saying "It takes a village to raise a child." In Woodruff, it took a town and a website to find a dog. Ben and Christine Woynich's black lab Bo disappeared Thursday around 2:30. His owners called Newswatch 12 around 8:00 p.m. and we posted a description on our Facebook wall. The post reached over 2,000 people and got 65 comments from people promising to keep an eye out. Full Story: WJFW

Vilas County Open Meeting Flap Settled, Tomlanovich Still Wants To Review

EAGLE RIVER - Government is supposed to represent the people. That's part of the reason Vilas County Sheriff Frank Tomlanovich filed a complaint saying some county business that should be done in public was done behind closed doors. The complaint said some county board members debated 2012 budget matters without others knowing. The case ended up with an independent investigator - Trempealeau County District Attorney Taavi McMahon. Full Story: WJFW

Buying This Cookbook Will Help a Kid Get a Bike

RHINELANDER - What's old to you could make Rhinelander area kids pretty happy this holiday season, just by donating something you already planned to get rid of. It all started when Cognitive Disabilities Teacher Shelley Lehman helped a student find a bike for his new job. She realized there were probably many people in the community who couldn't afford a bike. So Lehman and her students started taking donations of old bikes. Full Story: WJFW

County Funding Will Keep Business Incubator Growing

EAGLE RIVER - A Northwoods Business incubator seems to be off and running. The Vilas County Board is recognizing that. The Board approved $100,000 in funding to keep the business incubator running. This incubator, similar to a baby's incubator, helps small or infant businesses get going in Vilas County. The Vilas County Economic Development Corporation opened the incubator earlier this year. Closing up Shop: Rhinelander Staple to Close its Doors for Good

A staple of Downtown Rhinelander will close its doors for the last time early next year. John Stoehr has been the go-to guy for custom jewelry since taking over from his dad, who opened the store 40 years ago. He said closing was a tough decision, but the economy made it necessary. "The gold prices and silver prices are getting higher and higher consistently. I understand when people have a hard time paying their gas bill they're not going to be buying diamonds," says Stoehr. Second Mole Lake Stabbing Suspect Sentenced to Prison

CRANDON - If you think being underage will keep you out of prison... think again. A Mole Lake stabbing suspect will be one of the youngest inmates in the adult prison system for the next four years. Forest County District Attorney Chuck Simono told the Court Craig McGeshick has always been forthcoming with his role in February's Mole Lake stabbing. But despite facing 30 years in prison he wouldn't cooperate with any other information. "He refused to say anything, repeatedly saying he was not going to be a snitch, he was not going to tell anyone who was involved. And he hasn't from day one until now. That, Your Honor is going to really give him rank, it's going to give him status all within the gang setting in which he thrives," says Simono. Full Story: WJFW

City Council to Consider "All Ages" Ordinance for Events

More entertainment options could open up to people under 21 in Rhinelander. Right now, minors can't go to shows or concerts if they're held in a place that has a liquor license. But the owner of the Elbo Room Lounge in downtown Rhinelander wants to change that. He requested an ordinance to allow people under age 21 into shows and events. Full Story: WJFW

Zarda Will Serve Four Years for Mole Lake Stabbing

CRANDON - The first Mole Lake stabbing suspect was sentenced Monday. 18-year-old Melvin Zarda is one of six charged in the beating and stabbing of a Wausau Man back in February. "He has clearly indicated that he is part of the Latin Kings. This whole interaction that is before the court is gang-based," says Forest County District Attorney Chuck Simono. Facing attempted murder charges, Melvin Zarda took a plea deal with the state. Full Story: WJFW

Prescription Drug Abuse

MINOCQUA - Drug abuse has become a growing problem across the country and perhaps the most concerning issue involved is prescription drugs. The misuse, dispersion and abuse of prescription drugs unfortunately often begins in a legitimate pharmacy or doctors office. The Lakeland Area Prescription Drug Task Force was created to find a proactive approach to keeping drugs in the hands of those who need them and off the streets. Full Story: WJFW

'Kindness for Kids' Brings Christmas Joy to Children in Need

RHINELANDER - As you shop for gifts this year, you can make sure there are toys under the tree for a less fortunate child on Christmas morning. Volunteers in Rhinelander have put together ‘Kindness for Kids’ for 18 years. They collect new toys for newborns up to 15 year olds. Furniture & Appliance Mart Bucks Black Friday Trend

Here in the Northwoods, some retail chains are resisting the urge to open on Thankgiving or before dawn on Black Friday. Stevens Point-based Furniture and Appliance Mart has ten stores throughout Wisconsin. They have Black Friday specials, but up until five years ago, they kept their normal store hours. "We will never open earlier than 7 a.m. on Black Friday. The temptation is definitely there from a business standpoint. We'd be lying if we said it wasn't," said advertising and marketing director Jon Gadbois. "But our employees are far too important to us for us to take away their Thanksgiving." Full Story: WJFW
