Ministry Sacred Heart a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital

TOMAHAWK - A local hospital just received huge recognition. Being top in the nation for anything is a big deal for small communities here the Northwoods, but in Tomahawk they just received that honor. Ministry Sacred Heart Hospital is one of the top 20 critical access hospitals in the U.S. They beat out more than 1,300 others for the award. "Critical Access is more for rural hospitals. It's Medicare's way of classifying the rural hospitals. It reassures that small towns like Tomahawk in northern Wisconsin will have access to quality care," says Carmen Viegut, Manager of Patient Care Services. Full Story: WJFW

Emotionally Disturbed Man Armed With Gun Causes Scene at Marshfield Clinic Tuesday

EAGLE RIVER - An emotionally disturbed man created a frightening scene in Eagle River Tuesday afternoon. Police responded to the Marshfield Clinic on Commerce Loop in Eagle River around 2:15. Employees say a 60-year-old man showed up crying hysterically demanding help. At nearly the same time, Police received a call from a home near Eagle River. That caller said a suicidal man left with a loaded gun. Full Story: WJFW

Mining Will Stay In Oneida County Code

Whether you like it or not, the possibility of mining won't be leaving Oneida County for now. Even though the County Board voted against mining earlier this year -- it'll remain part of county code. Supervisor Paul Dean's resolution to remove mining language failed. He wanted it out after the county voted against exploration in the Town of Lynne. Supervisor Jack Martinson believes new language could be drafted if someone else wants to pursue projects. Full Story: WJFW

City Hall Renovations Near Completion

One hundred years would wear anyone or anything down. That's true for the century-old Rhinelander City Hall, so last fall, the city council approved a renovation project. Now, the work is almost done. "They just finished up the painting on the inside of the building, so that was one of the last things that wound down," said city council member Alex Young. "They did a lot of brickwork on the exterior of the building and replaced some stonework on the building as well." Full Story: WJFW

New Information About Monday's Lockdown At Glidden School

GLIDDEN - The Glidden School building went into lockdown yesterday. Some custodians outside the building heard sounds similar to gunshots. The Ashland County Sheriff's Office investigated and continues to do so today. Patrol Lieutenant Michael Malmberg says they were all on higher alert after last week's tragedy in Connecticut but their response was typical. "We were concerned with the possibility of a copycat or someone attempting to play off of what happened last week," Malmberg said. Full Story: WJFW

AT&T Expanding Coverage In Northwoods

MINOCQUA - Getting consistently good cell phone service remains an issue for the Northwoods. But Minocqua seems to be making progress. AT&T approached the Minocqua Town board about upgrading service in the area. Town Chairman Mark Hartzheim says the plans include six new antennas that replace the three current ones. This would enable 4G coverage, something that's lacking throughout the Northwoods. Full Story: WJFW

Northwoods Replica Assault Weapon Sales Spike After School Shooting

RHINELANDER - Adam Lanza killed 20 children with a replica of a military rifle in Newtown, Connecticut last week. Just a few days later, that type of gun is a popular buy in the Northwoods. It may seem counterintuitive - the style of gun used in the Connecticut massacre suddenly becoming more popular. Forest County Humane Society Draws Dollars from Fundraiser

CRANDON - The Forest County Humane Society needs the community's help to care for pets without a home. This weekend, their thousand-dollar raffle and bake sale helped raise money going to a very specific place. "It's the veterinary relief fund because our veterinary bills are so extensive, that we have to raise money for spaying and neutering and shots," say Tonya and Tinya Walerko of the Humane Society. Forest County Toys for Tots Donation

CRANDON - Nearly 100 more Christmas trees will have presents under them this year thanks to the kindness of people in Forest County. Each year, Forest County Social Services helped with a toy drive. They joined with Covantage Credit Union in Crandon and the Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel to make it happen. But this year Social Services had to drop the program, so the credit union and casino picked it up. Employees at the Casino donated more than 270 toys. Full Story: WJFW

Stabbing Suspect Charged as an Adult

We're learning more about the early morning stabbing on Spring Lake Road in Rhinelander that happened Wednesday. We've learned from the district attorney's office the 16-year-old suspect will be tried as an adult. Michael Thimm was charged today with first degree attempted intentional homicide, and first degree recklessly endangering safety. The stabbing happened at 7:30 Wednesday morning. Full Story: WJFW

UPDATE: Victims of stabbing on Spring Lake Road identified

The Rhinelander Police Department's investigation into Wednesday's stabbing incident on Spring Lake Road continues, but names of the two adult victims have now been released. Suffering non-life threatening injuries in the incident were Joel J. Sandberg, 44, and Theresa A. Nordquist, 42. Nordquist required surgery because of a stab wound to the throat area. Sandberg received regular emergency room treatment for injuries to the neck and rib areas as well as defensive wounds on his hands. Full Story: River News Online

Public hearing set on gas station alcohol sales issue

A City Council vote in January will determine whether gas stations located within the city limits will be allowed to sell alcohol. A city ordinance governing liquor licenses currently prohibits the practice but city officials are revisiting the prohibition, partially because Kwik Trip has shown interest in locating as many as three stores in Rhinelander. At a meeting of the city's Protection of Persons and Property (PPP) Committee last month, a Kwik Trip representative explained the company wants to be able to sell beer as well as other items, which is typical of the Kwik Trip brand. Possible drug overdose serves as catalyst for heroin investigation

he Oneida County Sheriff's Office and members of the Northcentral Drug Enforcement Group (NORDEG) have begun an investigation following a possible drug overdose death in the town of Crescent. The investigation is specifically targeting the use and delivery of heroin, according to a sheriff's office press release sent out Wednesday afternoon. The death of David M. Stahl, 29, as a result of a possible drug overdose is one of the events spurring on the investigation. According to the press release, individuals involved in the use of controlled substances surrounding Stahl's death continue to be interviewed. Full Story: River News Online

Walmart theft case rescheduled

There's no resolution yet in the case of two women suspected by police in connection with a theft and property damage incident that occurred at the Rhinelander Walmart in September. Tara Hoppe, 30, and Kelsey Zastrow, 23, are each facing one count of felony retail theft as well as misdemeanor counts of retail theft and criminal damage to property. They appeared in Oneida County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon, but Oneida County Assistant District Attorney Steven Michlig explained that defense counsel had just been provided new Walmart surveillance videos and hadn't had a chance to review them yet. How to Spot Oak Wilt and What to Do About It

TOMAHAWK - Trees add significantly to the beauty of the Northwoods. But there's a disease that kills some of them off and spreads to others before most people can figure out what to do about it. "Oak Wilt is a fatal disease on Red Oaks. It looks completely healthy in the spring and then sometime in June, July, August or September it loses 99 percent of its leaves within a month," says Brian Schwingle, a DNR forest insect and disease specialist. That's exactly what happened to this tree off Highway 8 near Lake Nokomis. Schwingle says Oak Wilt is prominent in the area, as well as other parts of Vilas, Oneida and Lincoln Counties. Mentally Disabled Minocqua Man Headed to Group Home After Sexual Assault of a Child

A Minocqua man will have to spend at least the next 8 months in a group home. 33-year-old Scott Zeinert faced four felonies for sexual assault on a child under 13. Prosecutors agreed to amend two of the counts to child enticement and drop two more. Zeinert turned himself into police in August after his mother found out he molested an 8-year-old girl. Library Internet Upgrade

The Rhinelander District Library undergoes some big changes this week. If you use the internet there, you'll notice faster downloads. The library is in the process of upgrading to a faster connection. "It is pretty much faster. It's going from 15 megabites per second to 50," says Ed Hughes, Library Director. The wireless internet was updated today while the wired computers will be changed next week. Even if you don't have a library membership, you can still come in and use the computers. UPDATE: Two People Injured In Wednesday Morning Stabbing

A stabbing in Rhinelander this morning put two people in the hospital, and a 16 year old in police custody. It happened around 7:30 this morning on the 500 block of Spring Lake Road in Rhinelander. "At approximately 7:26 this morning, there were 2 victims involved in a stabbing, and we have one male youth in custody at this time," said Rhinelander Police Chief, Mike Steffes. Police say the 16 year old cut a woman on the throat with a folding buck knife. A man was also cut on the neck, and ribs, and had defensive wounds to his hands. Full Story: WJFW

St. Germain Woman Could Face Homicide Charge in Possible Heroin Overdose

A St. Germain woman could be held responsible for the possible drug overdose of an Oneida County man. Police arrested 26-year-old Jennifer Heiting this week. She's accused of possessing and delivering heroin. Her arrest was part of an investigation into the death of David Stahl of Crescent. Police think Stahl may have overdosed on heroin. Trail 13 to Reopen Between Eagle River and Three Lakes

EAGLE RIVER - Snowmobilers can look forward to the reopening of a major connection between Eagle River and Three Lakes. The section west of Clearwater Lake on private land was closed last year. There are other trails between Eagle River to Three Lakes. But representatives from the snowmobile clubs in each town say Trail 13 is the fastest and easiest route.
