Walker leads Burke in latest poll; both hit the campaign trail

MADISON - Democrat Mary Burke is back on the campaign trail on the heels of a poll showing her trailing Republican Gov. Scott Walker by 7 points.

Burke was scheduled to campaign Thursday in Port Washington. Walker is starting his day in the Wausau area, then going east to Green Bay, Manitowoc and Sheboygan. Sen. Ron Johnson was campaigning with Walker.

Town board postpones decision on Conover-Phelps Trail project

CONOVER - The future of the Conover-Phelps Trail project remains in question.

The Conover Town Board was expected to decide Wednesday night whether to continue with its original plan, back out of, or change an agreement that would fund part of the trail in order to allow ATV use.

Instead, the board decided to meet next week to look at alternatives.

Sex offender charged for allegedly making booklet filled with photos of young girls

MINOCQUA - A Rhinelander sex offender could go back to prison.

Albert Chagnon allegedly made a booklet filled with photos of young Northwoods girls while he was still in prison in Oshkosh.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office had a community meeting Wednesday. Parents at the meeting were given details about the booklet.

Candidates spar over Ebola, mining, minimum wage and other national topics during debate

WAUSAU - Candidates for the 7th Congressional District debated over topics like mining, jobs, Ebola, healthcare, and other issues in Wausau Wednesday night.

Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wisconsin) and Kelly Westlund (D-Ashland) are running for the 7th Congressional District seat. The district covers part of 20 counties across northern Wisconsin.

The area lags behind the rest of the state economically.

Police need to identify girls in photos allegedly kept by convicted sex offender

ONEIDA COUNTY - A Rhinelander sex offender could be in more trouble. Albert Chagnon was released into Oneida County on October 7th, but now he's back in jail.

Chagnon allegedly made a booklet filled with photos of young Northwoods girls while he was still in prison. The Oneida County Sheriff's Office is holding a community meeting about the booklet tonight in Minocqua.

Police need to identify more than 250 girls whose photos are in the booklet.

Rapture Education Group hosts Halloween event

ANTIGO - The Rapture Education Group will give a special presentation on owls on Halloween (Friday). The meeting will be geared for children and adults. Live owls will be at the event and three of them will be released in the wild at the end of the meeting.

"We get all the species you can find in Wisconsin, they come in for rehab," said Director of Education Abbey Krumrie.

Professional cartoonist paints Hodag mural

RHINELANDER - Rhinelander's beloved Hodag will come to life thanks to a local cartoonist this week.

Thomas Barnett is painting the mural inside the Northwoods Community Elementary School.

"Mr. Losch, the principal, showed me this penciled Hodag that they had on the wall for years that no one ever did anything with. He had heard that I was an artist and asked if I'd be interested in coming in one of these days and doing something on the wall," said cartoonist Thomas Barnett.

Police search for man who shot at off-duty officer

MILWAUKEE - Police are looking for the gunman who fire shots at an off-duty officer in Milwaukee.

Authorities say the 52-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee officer witnessed a traffic accident Tuesday about 5:30 p.m. and following the striking vehicle which had left the scene. At one point the male suspect got out of his car and showed a handgun.

Candidates assert positions during 29th Senate race debate

WAUSAU - Moderators focused on education, jobs, voter ID and other topics during Tuesday's 29th State Senate District race in Wausau.

The 29th State Senate District covers places like Wausau, Medford and Hayward. The geographically large district impacts a number of economically diverse areas. Incumbent Jerry Petrowski (R-Marathon City) and challenger Paul DeMain (D-Hayward) are running for the seat.

Debates can turn into politically filled contests, but DeMain and Petrowski spent most of their time focusing on policy.

Health officials set up Ebola transfer plan

MADISON - Wisconsin health officials have set up a plan for moving Ebola patients in the state to one of four hospitals.

The state Department of Health Services issued a news release Tuesday saying the agency will work with doctors caring for Ebola patients to move the patients to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison or Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.

Future of Conover-Phelps Trail in question

CONOVER - An Northwoods bike trail could be in jeopardy. Wednesday night, the Conover town board may consider backing out of an agreement that would fund the first portion of the Conover-Phelps Trail.

"The project is about to be authorized to be bid and actually built next summer," says Great Headwaters Trails President Jeff Currie.

That project is the first portion of a bike, pedestrian, and snowmobile trail that would connect Conover and Phelps. But it may not happen.

Students may face charges for sending "inappropriate" photos

RHINELANDER - Students in Rhinelander may face charges for sending photos on their cell phones and other electronics.

Oneida County Sheriff's deputies would only call the photos inappropriate. The Sheriff's office and the School District of Rhinelander are looking into what happened.

Deputies wouldn't release any more information about the investigation.

Students reenact the lives of those that lived in the community on cemetery tour

CRANDON - People don't typically walk around cemeteries at night, but Monday night, a large group in Crandon wanted to learn about their community in a unique way.

The Crandon Public Library and Forest County Historical Society hosted their first "Flashlight Lakeside Cemetery Tour".

They did a tour like this in the summer, but Crandon's Public Library local history clerk, Amanda Flannery, wanted to have a wide variety of age on the tour.
