Pawz n' Clawz celebrates grand opening in Antigo

ANTIGO - Some people might consider their pets apart of the family. It's important to keep them healthy and feed with the right nutrition's. That's why a pet food store opened Saturday.

Pawz n' Clawz opened their second store in Antigo. The original one is located in Rhinelander.

They want to make sure they're selling their customers all natural food for their cats or dogs. Plus inform them on what their store is based on.

Homeless charity drive needs help

RHINELANDER - The Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing needs your help taking care of the homeless. The alliance helps homeless people in Lincoln, Langlade, Forest, Oneida, and Vilas counties. Organizers just started the Everybody Deserves Shelter Campaign. Local businesses are helping run the campaign.

"We are working at establishing businesses ,within our hopefully five counties that we serve, that will offer customers and employees the chance to make a nominal one dollar donation," said NATH Executive Director Tammy Modic.

Federal report: Homelessness down slightly in WI

MADISON - A federal report says the number of homeless people has declined slightly in Wisconsin.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development report to Congress comes from a one-night count by local homeless advocacy agencies. Wisconsin's report says the number of homeless people declined nearly 1 percent this year compared to 2013 and dropped about 4{ percent from 2010.

Raising funds for local football team, getting the community more involved

RHINELANDER - The Hodag Gridiron Club wants to get the community more involved in Rhinelander High School's football team.

The team's season may be over this year, but the club is already raising money for the future.

The club held its first fundraising banquet tonight. They raffled off many different team items.

Walker turning to RGA to help boost voter turnout

RHINELANDER - Gov. Scott Walker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour finished off Walker's Friday bus tour with a stop in Rhinelander.

The message from the group was clear. Get voters out to vote.

"What I hope is in the end, more so than air time, more so than names, is that voters like voters here will get out and talk neighbor to neighbor, where they get the facts," Walker said.

Sex offenders must follow strict rules on Halloween

RHINELANDER - Sex offenders on probation or parole need to follow strict rules on Halloween. It's part of the state Department of Corrections' trick-or-treat safety plan.

Sex offenders need to stay home tonight. They can't wear any costumes or have any Halloween decorations up. Their porch lights also need to be off during trick-or-treating hours.

Sex offenders will be checked up on to make sure they're following the rules.

Milwaukee police vote 'no confidence' in chief

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee police have taken a vote that expresses no confidence in their chief after he fired a white officer who shot and killed a black man in a downtown park.

Union president Mike Crivello announced Friday that about 99 percent of the votes expressed no confidence in Chief Edward Flynn.

He did not say how many of the union's 1,600 officers voted, only that it was a majority.

100 Yards of Halloween Decorations

RHINELANDER - A lot of people in the Northwoods will put out decorations for Halloween. But one Rhinelander woman and her daughter have gone above and beyond. They've grown their display for the past 10 years to extend between their houses and covering more than 100 yards.

"We had four boys and we wanted a girl and she was born on Halloween, so my husband said, 'Look, we finally got our witch!'" said Linda Klaver.

Minocqua Chamber of Commerce members break ground for expansion

MINOCQUA - Minocqua gets many tourists. An expansion to the town's chamber of commerce might bring and keep more people in the area.

Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce board members broke ground outside of the chamber Friday. They'll be adding an extra 900 square feet of office space.

"It'll have a small kitchenette for gatherings and then a really large open concept room with all concealing. It'll have a new foyer for guest," said Minocqua Building Committee chairman, Mike Brighum.

Hire me then fire me, Northwoods candidate for State Treasurer wants to eliminate position

RHINELANDER - Hire me then fire me. That's what a Northwoods candidate for State Treasurer wants voters to do.

Jerry Shidell is a libertarian from Rhinelander. You'll find his name on the ballot for State Treasurer. He plans on getting rid of the job.

Shidell says the treasurer doesn't have many responsibilities and the position costs too much.

School District of Rhinelander passes 2014-15 budget; sees increase in enrollment

RHINELANDER - The School District of Rhinelander will get a little bit more funding from property taxes this year. Rhinelander passed a referendum in 2013.

The district gets 4 million dollars per year through 2016.

On Monday the district approved the tax rate and mill levy for the year. Taxpayers will pay $10.99 per thousand dollars of property values.

25th Senate candidates differ over mining law, agree on importance of broadband and education

RHINELANDER - The mining issue might decide the winner of the 25th State senate district. The huge district covers a large portion of northern Wisconsin stretching from parts of Vilas County to parts of Barron County. Two types of mines have caused controversy in the district. A proposed taconite mine in the north, and sand mines in the west.

Gogebic Taconite is proposing a four-mile open pit taconite mine in Ashland and Iron County. Project leaders say the project will lead to 700 direct jobs, as well as numerous spillover jobs because of the construction of the mine.

Price County man sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing wife

PHILLIPS - A 47-year-old Price County man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for murdering his wife. The murder happened just two weeks after William Rambo was charged with domestic abuse.

He could get released on extended supervision after serving his prison sentence. A judge will decide that after he serves that time.

It started August 22, 2013 in Park Falls. William Rambo and his wife Dawn had been arguing at their home at 284 2nd Street North. According to the criminal complaint, Dawn made William leave the house to settle down. He said they got into an altercation when he got back.

Wisconsin Rapids man gets life in 2008 homicide

WISCONSIN RAPIDS - A 55-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury convicted him of killing his daughter's ex-boyfriend.

Jurors deliberated for less than two hours Thursday before finding Joseph Reinwand guilty of first-degree intentional homicide.

Wood County Judge Greg Potter sentenced Reinwand to life in prison with no eligibility for extended supervision.

Wisconsin GAB predicts 2.5 million to vote in 2014 election

MADISON - Wisconsin election officials are predicting a little more than half of the state's voting-age population will go to the polls next week.

The Government Accountability Board officials said Thursday it expects about 2.5 million people will vote Tuesday. That's about 56.5 percent of the 4.3 million people in Wisconsin old enough to vote.

Clothing drive organizers need help

ANTIGO - A clothing drive will help hundreds of families in Langlade County stay warm this winter. Salvation Army and AmeriGas will run the Keeping Our Community Warm clothing drive. The program clothed 350 people last year, but organizers say they'll need more clothes this year.

"We're always open for someone to volunteer their time," said AmeriGas Customer Service Rep. Julie Brandt. "Especially to go to the donation boxes and bring the coats to AmeriGas."

Substitute teachers will get paid more.

RHINELANDER - Substitute teachers working for the Rhinelander School District will get paid more.

The district superintendent thinks the pay increase will make it easier for them to find substitutes. The district has had a difficult time finding subs since they started paying substitute teachers less than other districts.

Last year, they changed long term sub pay from 190 dollars to 135 dollars per day.

Defense rests in Wisconsin Rapids homicide trial

WISCONSIN RAPIDS - The attorneys for a 55-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man accused of killing his daughter's ex-boyfriend have rested their case after two days of witness testimony.

Joseph Reinwand is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the 2008 shooting death of 35-year-old Dale Meister. Reinwand decided not the take the stand Wednesday in his own defense.

Court documents show Meister had previously told several people that he was afraid Reinwand would try to kill him. Meister and Reinwand's daughter, Jolynn, were in the midst of a custody dispute over their child.
