The Bonduel High School baseball team extended its win streak to 12 games Thursday with a 2-1 win at home against Pacelli.
A sixth-inning sacrifice fly from Austin Siolka drove in the game-winning run for the Bears, who improved their record to 12-0, 8-0 Central Wisconsin Conference-8. Trevor Pederson pitched the complete-game win with eight strikeouts. He allowed five hits.
The Bears took an early lead, scoring in their first at-bat. Jordan Richter hit a RBI-single to give Bonduel a 1-0 lead. Pacelli tied the game in the second inning on a fielder’s choice and the tie score remained until the sixth inning.
Connor Rosin had a leadoff single, followed by a bunt single by Travis Wollenberg. After an infield fly brought the first Bonduel out, Pacelli committed a catastrophic fielding error that loaded the bases with one out. Siolka provided the sacrifice fly that scored Rosin and gave Bonduel the 2-1 advantage.
Pacelli had a last chance with its at-bat to begin the seventh inning, but Pederson closed the win. Chris Shibilski took the loss.
“Both pitchers were sharp all-game,” Bonduel coach Donnie Gruenewald said.

Contributed Photo Lawrence University’s Amanda Jaskolski, of Shawano, was named the Midwest Conference’s top softball player in 2015.
Lawrence University senior shortstop Amanda Jaskolski has been named the Midwest Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive softball season.
Jaskolski – a Shawano Community High School graduate – earned the honor after leading the conference in several offensive categories and helping the Appleton school to the North Division title.
The defending North Division Player of the Year hit .462 on the season with 37 runs scored, 13 home runs and 46 runs batted in. She led the league in on-base percentage at .573 and was first in RBIs, homers and walks (31); she finished second in hits, slugging percentage and runs scored.
Jaskolski also decimated the Lawrence season records in 2015 by tying or setting six marks.
Her 13 homers eclipsed the record of 12 set by Carli Gurholt in 2009. She also obliterated the total bases record with 104. The prior mark was 79, set by Jenny Burris in 2001 and Gurholt in 2009.
Jaskolski’s 54 hits broke the record of 51 set by Burris in 2001, and she tied Burris’ record of 37 runs scored in 2001. She also broke the record for walks in a season as teams consistently pitched around her. She drew 31 walks, topping the mark of 22 set by Stephanie Ash in 1992.
In conference play, Jaskolski hit .439 with three doubles, three homers and 12 RBIs. She also was walked 15 times, which helped her score a team-best 16 runs in league play.
Winona State University
Shawano Community High School graduate Dan Lohff earned his first win of the year for the Winona State University baseball team Saturday, 8-5.
Lohff appeared in nine games for the Winona, Minnesota, school prior to Saturday’s game against Minnesota State, all in relief roles.
Winona State used a different strategy in taking down the Mavericks in the second game of a doubleheader, using five different relief pitchers instead of a starter. Lohff earned the win by pitching three innings in relief, giving up no runs on two hits with no walks and a strikeout. This was his longest outing of the season so far.
The Warriors opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then extended their advantage to 7-2 with a four-run fifth inning. The doubleheader split moved Winona State to 21-28 overall and 19-17 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Lakeland College
Bonduel High School graduate Ryan Boettcher had two hits and a RBI for Lakeland College in its second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. His fifth-inning double broke Concordia’s shutout bid and brought the score to 5-1, though the Boettcher and the Muskies were swept in the doubleheader, 13-1 and 9-2. The Sheboygan school dropped to 9-30 on the season.
Concordia University Wisconsin
Nicole Gloede, a Bonduel High School grad, finished 19th in the discus for Concordia University Wisconsin on April 25 in the Wisconsin Private College Championships at St. Norbert College in De Pere.
Her final effort, marked at 26.74 meters, was her best. Concordia, in Mequon, finished fourth in the team standings with 91 points; Carthage won the event with 207.

Scott Owen, Special to the Leader
Former track champions Nick Anvelink, Jerry Wilinski and Tracy Wassenberg each raced to their first wins of the year Saturday at the historic half-mile Shawano Speedway.
Justin Jacobsen held off a defending track champion for his first win of the year, and Jasper Drengler again showed why he is one of the top pilots in the area.
Late Models
Brett Swedberg shot from his front-row starting position and into the lead at the start of the Late Model feature, while Paul Parker and Anvelink moved into second and third. On the third lap, Anvelink cleared Parker to move to second and quickly began to erase Swedberg’s lead. On lap eight, Anvelink pulled even with Swedberg as the pair raced side by side for the next two laps, with Anvelink taking the lead on lap 10.
Swedberg stayed with Anvelink for the next few laps as the pair continued to tour the track alongside one another. On lap 13, though, Swedberg’s machine began to smoke and lost power, coasting into the pits. This put Anvelink out in front by himself as he cruised to his first win of the year. Paul Parker took second. Doug Blashe finished in third.
IMCA Modified
Mark Weisnicht took the lead on the opening lap of the IMCA Modified feature and wasted no time pulling to a considerable lead over Mitch Stankowski. With nearly a half-straightaway lead by lap six, Weisnicht dropped off the pace and pulled pitside. This handed the lead to Stankowski on lap seven. A caution flag then bunched the field back up. Lap eight saw Wilinski nose ahead of Stankowski to take the lead. Stankowski powered back to the outside of Wilinski on lap nine to take back the lead.
Stankowski continued to lead Wilinski and a hard-charging Matt Oreskovich, who started the race in 17th. After the completion of lap 14, the caution flag flew. On the restart of the race, Wilinski was able to regain the lead from Stankowski. Another caution period after lap 17 set up a three-lap shootout to the finish. As the race went back to green, Wilinski stayed in the lead, with Oreskovich putting the pass on Stankowski for second. As the checkered flag waived, it was Wilinski winning over Oreskovich, while Marcus Yarie passed Stankowski coming out of turn four to take third.
IMCA Stock Car
Jacobsen and Gary Kasperek raced door-to-door for the first few laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature before Jacobsen began to pull away. Jacobsen masterfully worked the high line of the race track as the race stayed green. Lap eight saw Travis VanStraten assert himself in the second position. On lap 14, VanStraten moved to within car lengths of Jacobsen as the pair raced through lapped traffic. Over the last five laps of the race, VanStraten applied heavy pressure to Jacobsen, who never faltered. The pair raced the final lap side-by-side, with Jacobsen winning at the line. Brandon Czarapata finished third.
IMCA Sport Mod
The IMCA Sport Mod feature was paced early by Justin Woller, though he received plenty of pressure from Jordan Barkholtz. Barkholtz got into the back of Woller while trying to make the pass for the lead on lap 11, causing Woller to spin. Barkoltz was sent to the rear of the field, while Woller was given back the lead on the restart. When the green flag flew again, Woller was joined by Wassenberg, Lucas Lamberies and Wyatt Block in the battle for the lead. Woller spun while exiting turn four on lap 16, handing Wassenberg the point position. Wassenberg held of Block for the win. It was Block's second runner-up finish in a row. Lamberies took third for the second straight week.
Mighty Four
Drengler wrestled the lead from Calvin Stueck on lap six of the Mighty Four feature and went on to pick up the victory. Stueck held off Matt Brehmer to finish second.

Scott Owen, Special to the Leader
Night one of the 2015 racing season is in the books, and defending track champions Ron Berna in the Late Model ranks and Travis VanStraten in the IMCA Stock Car division had strong showings on the way to feature wins.
Berna passed early leader Brett Swedberg and subsequently held off challenges from Swedberg en route to victory. For Swedberg, it was a rough weekend. He lost an engine during Friday night’s practice session, then he dropped out of the feature Saturday night late in the race with smoke coming from his machine for a number of laps.
Berna, the only nine-time track champion, is off to an early advantage in the pursuit of his tenth title.
VanStraten was dominant in his first win of the season. With former IMCA Stock Car national point champion and Super Nationals champion Brandon Czarapata at the track last week, I thought it might be a close battle, but VanStraten won by a sizable margin. Oconto racer Steven Stewart had an excellent third-place finish.
Stewart and Dustin Loberger plan to race weekly at Shawano this season and add to an already stout field.
The IMCA Sport Mod feature, though plagued early on by cautions, turned out to be a good battle between three former go-kart standouts. Brock Saunders gained his second career feature win at the Shawano Speedway. Wyatt Block and Lucas Lamberies finished second and third. Not coincidentally, each one of these young men hail from a racing family.
Getting back to the early-race cautions, a number of them involved rookies. It is a part of the learning curve and might not always be easy to watch, but a wise man once told me, “If you’ve never spun out, then you’ve never gone fast enough.”
Names such as Tyler Thiex, Lloyd Allen, Mike Phillips and Kyle Raddant might someday visit victory lane.
Another interesting item came out of Saturday’s race. Unbeknownst to me, the Late Model feature was scheduled for 25 laps and will be 25 laps all season. For the fans, it may make things more interesting. For the racers, I’m certain that everyone is happy about the move.
Over the course of a full season, an extra five laps on an engine can equal three to four additional nights of racing on an engine. This, in turn, can be the difference between having an engine last all year and having to have an engine rebuilt. It also is an additional five laps on tires.
In the end, I hope it is worth the additional laps.
Also look for a few more drivers to make there 2015 debut this weekend. Possibly Chucky Forstner and Jared Siefert. Racing starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
See you at the speedway.

Leader Photo by Jason Arndt Shawano Community High School freshman Erin Cerveny hurls a fastball Thursday against visiting Oconto Falls at Martzke Memorial Field. Cerveny pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits, struck out five and walked three.
A two-out double in the fifth inning by senior Courtney Ainsworth propelled the Shawano Community High School softball team to a 9-1 victory Thursday against visiting Oconto Falls.
With the score tied at 1, Ainsworth doubled in leadoff hitter Saige Henning and subsequently scored on a single by freshman Brianna Zook.
“Her swing in the fifth was the key swing of the night,” Shawano coach Kevin Isaacson said. “She is a senior leader and did what needed to be done tonight.”
Ainsworth was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs.
Before the Hawks’ rally, the game was a pitching duel between Shawano freshman Erin Cerveny and Oconto Falls sophomore MaKenna Kussow.
Cerveny pitched a complete game, striking out six and walking none while allowing five hits and one earned run. She held the Panthers to three hits over the final four innings, when only one runner reached beyond second base.
“She did what she had to do: throw strikes, keep the ball down and let our defense do the work,” Isaacson said. “That was the recipe for success.”
Senior Liz Manns scored the Panthers’ only run on a double by senior Holly Virtues in the first inning.
Shawano got on the board in the bottom of the second. Junior Julia Beck (1-3) scored following a single, two stolen bases and a fielder’s choice.
After taking control in the fifth, the Hawks bolstered their lead with six runs in the sixth inning on another two-out rally. Crossing the plate were Henning (2-4, two runs), Alli Raddant (2-4, RBI), Courtney Ainsworth, Zook (1-3, BB, RBI), Nicki Ainsworth (2-3, double, RBI) and Cerveny (0-4, two RBIs).
Oconto Falls coach Rochell Otto said fielding miscues led to the team’s downfall in the sixth inning.
“This was a very good high school softball game up to the sixth inning” she said. “Unfortunately, we made a couple of mistakes physically and mentally in that inning.”
Kussow gave up three earned runs on 11 hits in six innings for the Panthers (2-5, 1-4 Bay). She struck out five and walked three.
The win moved Shawano (4-4, 3-1 Bay) into a second-place tie with Luxemburg-Casco in the Bay Conference.

Gary Seymour, [email protected]
The Green Bay Packers will play the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving, and the marketing possibilities are unlimited.
For example, the Packers could take a page from the White House book of photo ops, where on every Thanksgiving one random turkey is “pardoned” by the chief executive and allowed to go free and live out the rest of his natural turkey life.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers could, in that same spirit of the holiday, “pardon” a defensive back and not throw in his direction all game. It could mean the Packers leading by only three touchdowns at half instead of four or five, but the mercy angle would play big, with the holiday and all. Icing on the cake for one of their two guaranteed victories every year.
Thanksgiving got a little more eventful for Packers fans with the announcement of the Nov. 26 game, which will be played at Lambeau Field. A win over Chicago is always well met, maybe even a little more so on a holiday, and a win is a lock because for at least the last 20 years the Bears have shown an uncanny knack for losing to the Packers. From the time Brett Favre became a starter and throughout the current reign of Aaron Rodgers, the Packers have owned the Bears.
Athletes and coaches today are media-savvy enough to stick to cliche replies, and avoid remarks that could generate controversy or provide motivation for an opponent. You will never hear any of the Packers players or coaching staff say on the record that they’re going to beat the Bears twice, for obvious reasons, even if they know it’s true.
You rarely hear a pro athlete or coach talk of winning the next two or three, either, because that violates one of the guidelines of sportspeak. That’s not taking them one at a time. Not taking them one at a time suggests less than total focus on the upcoming game, a failure in preparation.
You might hear it occasionally when it’s a series, as with Jason Kidd’s remark after the Milwaukee Bucks’ second straight loss in their best-of-seven series with the Chicago Bulls.
Kidd said, correctly, that the Bucks needed to “hold serve” to keep alive their chances of winning the series. He meant that the Bucks would have to win their next two games at home — to hold serve, as it were, winning the games they’re supposed to — lest they go the way that teams falling behind in short series have gone. No team has ever won an NBA playoff series after trailing three games to none, and fewer than one out of five has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win.
He could have stressed the importance of a Game 3 win, but he kept it simple and spoke plain truth. They need to win both games at home to have a shot at overcoming the Bulls. In a playoff series, there is no looking past a team to the next opponent, because the next opponent is the same team.
There is another compelling reason to enjoy the NFL draft next weekend and anticipate the upcoming football season: The Milwaukee Brewers are already out of the race in the National League Central Division.
Not mathematically out of it. One hundred forty-seven games is plenty to erase an eight-game deficit. They are historically out of it. No team has ever recovered from a 2-13 start to make the playoffs.
Maybe the Brewers will be the first. Maybe you can’t count them out yet. Never say never, because you never know.
Most often, though, you have a pretty good idea.
